Mary Whitehouse

After watching the documentary about the video Nasties, Mary Whitehouse campaigned to have the movies banned not because she saw them but she saw covers. If she was still alive would she hate the shameless covers and campaign again.

I watched both Nucleus Video Nasties docs last night, and both parts of Ban the Sadist Videos this morning
She'd have a field day with some of the stuff that's available these days, the Saw film, Hostel etc. As for the Shameless covers, she'd probably take offence to the covers with tits on the front, mainly because hers went South years ago

bleakshaun 4th May 2017 02:48 PM

i find it hilarious how she said called Evil Dead the number one nasty, when there was worst like I Spit on Your Grave
what's worst was she never watched it :pound:

I've seen a lot more of the films in question now since when I first watched them so I can put it more in context. They're only an hour long the docs, I suppose I can afford to watch at least the first one.

Rik 4th May 2017 03:36 PM

Yeah, I've seen and own a lot more of the films now, not sure if that's a good thing though

Demdike@Cult Labs 4th May 2017 03:57 PM

I doubt Mary Whitehouse would have been a going concern nowadays. The times and attitudes have changed for the better over the years since.

There's more to worry about for people like that than some crappy Italian zombie film.

presumably she would have had the might of the daily mail still behind her irrespective of whether the times changed

Maybe, but even that paper seems half hearted when it comes to attacking a film nowadays.

It's a case of why bother when kids have access to porn and anything else in the world the second they switch on their phone.

Demdike@Cult Labs 4th May 2017 04:04 PM

She was head of a group called The Viewers and Listeners Association. Presumably that didn't fold just because she died.

it wasn't just films she was against, she also stood against gay news, she would have been protesting a few years ago when the same sex marriage bill came into place (my apologies - politics).

See you prove my point. Bigger things to ramble against than a few David Hess films.

Susan Foreman 4th May 2017 04:19 PM

She was named as the third pig on the Pink Floyd album 'Animals', written by Roger Waters

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOqblSqx_VI

"Hey you, White House
Ha, ha, charade you are
You house proud town mouse
Ha, ha, charade you are
You're trying to keep our feelings off the street
You're nearly a real treat
All tight lips and cold feet
And do you feel abused?
You got to stem the evil tide
And keep it all on the inside
Mary you're nearly a treat
Mary you're nearly a treat
But you're really a cry"

The first pig was James Callahan and the second one was Margaret Thatcher

I can never decide if David Hess or George Eastman is hotter. It's difficult haha. I think George takes it though.

She absolutely loathed 'The Romans In Britain'...even tho she never actually saw the play!

https://www.theguardian.com/stage/2005/oct/28/theatre

"In October 1980 a daring new play opened at the National Theatre. News of its graphic violence and simulated male rape soon had Mary Whitehouse up in arms. No surprises there. But no one could have guessed what would happen next. Mark Lawson on the drama than changed theatrical - and legal - history"

Most people own vast majorities of the nasties uncut now

Dave Boy 4th May 2017 05:57 PM

She was a pain in the arse. She even wanted to ban Tom and Jerry for being too violent.
A thorn in the side of Mary Millington, Mary named her adult sex mag 'Whitehouse' after her.

The most interesting thing about Mary Whitehouse in this age of click and download is why people are even bothering to talk about her. Give it up, she's dead and the world moves on!

Your right I did try to reanimate her but it went a bit pete tong luckily a government agency covered the whole thing up and blamed ISIS for the atrocity...phew another scrape with hilarious consequences averted.

Going by your question, why are we still bothering to talk about video nasties or the fact that films like 'Clockwork Orange', 'Texas Chainsaw' and 'The Exorcist' were unavailable on VHS for a period?

Like it or not, Mary existed, and she is a part of our world and culture.

The youngsters amongst us need to be educated, just in case someone similar is waiting in the wings to rise again. Mock if you want to, but remember - as well as her, my living memory includes Trevelyan, Murphy and Ferman

The only person that seem to be a pain in the ass just now is Katie Hopkins but doubt she will be a campaigner

Hey leave MTDS alone. He's in training for next years Britain's Got Talent.

See, here's a condom he turned into a frisbee in order to clear the frozen food isle for his distance flicking.

Mine too, we are the same age but when the discussion turns into talk of Whitehouse as a swinger it is time to end it. Plus wasn't the opening question something like what would she make of Shameless covers. It is s tired and over done subject and more of a nostalgic cluster f*ck for most.

I am all for discussing the past and the wider cultural issues of censorship bit more often than not the culture in which the whole nasties saga evolved is forgotten.

Don't worry. My post above has brought everything into the here and now.

FFS!! Not above clearly but on the last page.

Well yeah it's amazing how a post about a campaigner and her views on life managed to get someone to mention a Frisbee.

Is there any films out there round the world that are still listed as banned?

There's a great book about Mary Whitehouse consisting of archived letters. Really interesting stuff, if anyone's interested. It's called Ban This Filth!

Totally get why some folks aren't fussed about her any more. The past is the past and all that. But I do think it's worth keeping in mind, especially since few people seem to give a damn about censorship any more. It's just kind of accepted in the UK.

I've read through all the UK press coverage for Antichrist, Human Centipede 2 and A Serbian Film, and it's depressing how few people speak up when a film is cut. For HC2 and ASF, there was the Daily Mail, The Sun etc giving it their usually "Ban this!" nonsense, while The Guardian/Observer ran pro-censorship bobbins as their critics said "The BBFC are doing you a favour because these films suck." Even Kermode, who's published articles and book chapters with very anti-censorship views, can't be bothered if it's a film he doesn't like. (Watch him put on his anti-censorship hat again if a Friedkin movie gets cut.) There's an argument that it doesn't matter anyway, as you can get the uncut films online, but that's basically the BBFC acting as the advertising wing of the Pirate Bay. Maybe in the past this kind of controversy helped films, but now it must be absolutely crushing them because if they're cut then the majority of their target audience will just pirate it.

Sorry for the rant. One of my pet peeves is film critics who use the "I'm anti-censorship but..." strategy so they can endorse cuts to a film they don't like and still try to look cool.
