I'll get :focus: at last.

With An American Werewolf In London now downgraded to a 15 do you think The Thing should also share the same certificate?

It was rated 18 again for its cinema reissue a few months ago.

Philleh 16th September 2009 01:38 PM

Nah - The Thing is adult in nature and as such should remain for adult audiences. I watched it last night on the Big Screen - I'm happy :)

Angel 16th September 2009 02:41 PM

I think The Thing is a little to gruesome for a 15.

What about Scanners?

vincenzo 16th September 2009 03:05 PM

Borderline one. I would narrowly retain the 18 for Scanners. The violence isn't continual but when it comes it's pretty savage. Especially the beginning (head explosion) and end (duel) scenes.

Cronenberg's early horror films should still be 18 rated in my opinion. I would rate the uncut Dead Zone a 15 now.

How about Dead Ringers?

Philleh 16th September 2009 03:12 PM

Dead Ringers is an 18 for me... I thought The Fly should remain as such too! lol

vincenzo 16th September 2009 03:22 PM

The Fly is still an 18 (last rated 2005). The 15 rating is for the extras.

How about Children Of The Corn?

Philleh 16th September 2009 03:31 PM

Ah, that's okay then! lol

I thought somethings was up, no way could that film be a 15! lol Dead Zone I can understand, but that? Nuh-uh!

Dead Ringers deserves it's 18 too - purely for the overt sexuality of the piece (kinda like The Fly and Cronenberg's earlier work.)

vincenzo 16th September 2009 03:45 PM

The Dead Zone was cut once for a 15 video certificate (13 secs from the scissor suicide). Should be ok as an uncut 15 now though.

As a reversal I remember seeing Halloween III, Incredible Melting Man and Creepshow on the cinema back in the 80's and being surprised at how lenient the 15 (or 'AA' rather) certificates were. Melting Man was later upgraded to 18 for video, though a 15 is much more in line today.

Richard Gere's use of '****' in the 15 rated An Officer And A Gentleman was also a surprise. That was the first time the word was ever used in anything less than an X/18.

Angel 16th September 2009 05:32 PM

That scissors suicide in Dead Zone is very strong, not sure if it would get a 15.

vincenzo 16th September 2009 10:11 PM

Comparing it with The Craft (15 rated) they seem to be similarly effective regarding suicide, and the latter has strong elements of self harm. I can see what you mean though Angel. It would be a pretty borderline decision.

How about Fright Night?
