GIANT FROM THE UNKNOWN (1958)

Deaths of people and animals and local legends of spirits on Devils Crag lead a scientist group to believe a giant 500 year old Spanish conquistador stalks the mountains again.

Enjoyable little horror. The usual story..no-one believes the scientists and the local sheriff accuses the hero of the murders.
Make up for the giant man was done by legend Jack Pierce and the big man himself is played by Buddy Baer (Ursus in Quo Vadis)
.

Boyka: Undisputed 4

Scott Adkins kicks the living shit out of people hampered only by a goatee and dodgy Russian accent.

The Legend of Boggy Creek

Fantastic fake Bigfoot documentary that is like stepping into another world in the wilds of America.

Willow Creek

F*cking awful fake Bigfoot documentary that plays out as a copy of The Blair Witch Project in its last 20 minutes or so which is a shame as the start and middle of the film are pretty good given that there are only two main characters in the film. It is when the horror elements come in that things turn sour and scene after scene is lifted from TBWP.

Willow Creek was spoken of favorably when it came out but i hated it.

Legend of Boggy Creek is brilliant. I actually still think it's really creepy and as a kid found it very scary.

Ahh, I noticed Amazon have it to rent but it's under The Blancheville Monster title, however, it's a £2.99 rental and I have a £1.00 off coupon...

Cheers!

NIGHT LIFE OF THE GODS (UNIVERSAL 1935)

An eccentric scientist has an invention witch turns objects to stone. A ring on his finger can turn people to statues but they retain their minds.
After turning most of his awful family to stone, he heads on out in to the night and meets the lovely Meg. Together they go off and turn various people and even police cars to stone.
Taking refuge in a museum they are in a room of statues of various gods.
They wonder that if the gods returned today, would they be able to handle modern life. They then start bringing the statues of the gods to real life and take them partying out on the town...

Almost at one time a lost film, the movie has appeared once more but only in very poor prints. Still good to see the film and I enjoyed it.
The film is played as comedy and it never lets up on the banter and is sometimes quite loud and rattles along at a nice pace.
So glad I have seen this now. I waited so long to see a print.

La Strega in Amore (1966)

Titled The Witch in the US, Damiano Damiani's film is an intriguing piece of celluloid which tells the story of Richard Johnson's historian who is asked by an old woman to move into her mansion and catalogue a vast library of erotica. Once there he discovers Rosanna Schiaffino, a beautiful yet very strange young woman and Gian Maria Volontè, a man who appears to be the womans play thing.

This is quite a weird and wonderful film, reminiscent of later Bava efforts like Baron Blood and Lisa and the Devil in the way horror is combined with romance and death. Although the narrative is quite confusing, it's linear but asks many questions all of which are answered during the finale. However the whole plot is really spoiled by the films translated title of The Witch in Love, meaning you can constantly guess the hows and whys (mostly) of what is developing on screen. Still it's a pretty good effort and quite eerie and erotically hypnotic in it's overall effect.

Forgotten just how funny and brilliant this film is. Two friends on there way to collage are mistakenly arrested for murder. One of the friends has his mother get his cousin Vinny to defend him and this is were the fun starts not only are Vinny and his girlfriend ( Marisa Tomei) out of place , Vinny took many attempts to pass the bar and looks like he will do more harm than good to the boys case. But once he gets going hes actually pretty good and we have some of the funniest moments of the film when he is cross examining the witnesses. Tomei is also good in her role and the banter between her and Vinny is very funny, but I don't think it was worthy of an Oscar, but I also can't remember what else was up for best supporting actress that year so maybe she was. 9/10

Now watching the craft.

Keith Gordon made a great film.
It's called Static.

At least that's got a plot ...

The daughter of Dr Paul Carruthers has dreams and hallucinations about giant bats. When found at the scene of a death and no memory of how she got there, she believes she has inherited the madness of her father..the Devil Bat!

Sequel to the PRC release THE DEVIL BAT (1940) starring Bela Lugosi.
Some hazy dream scenes from the original film are the only horror on show here. It's really quite slow moving and you know from the start that she is being played, rather like SHE WOLF OF LONDON. The final scenes in which the papers of Paul Carruthers are found and that Paul is innocent of the murders in the original film make no sense at all

What Films Have You Seen Recently?

Just finished watching Hammer's Curse of the Werewolf on the Horror Channel, first time in about 4 years so I thought I'd share the review I did the last time in the Members Review Thread

THE CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF (1961) Directed by Terence Fisher

The Curse of the Werewolf was Hammer Horror’s only film to include the mythical Lycanthrope, first seen in Universal Pictures’ Werewolf of London in 1935. The film is based on the Werewolf of Paris, a novel from American author Guy Endore in 1933, instead switching the story from 19th century France to 19th century Spain.

Adapted for the screen by Anthony Hinds (The Brides of Dracula, The Evil of Frankenstein), credited here as John Elder, and directed by Hammer favourite Terence Fisher (Dracula, The Curse of Frankenstein), the film stars Oliver Reed in his first starring role as Leon Corledo, the bastard son of a jailed beggar (Richard Wordsworth) and the mute daughter of the jailer (Yvonne Romain).

Born on Christmas Day which is considered a curse (look what happened to the most famous guy born that day!), and raised by the man who took his mother in, with his housekeeper, Leon soon grows up into a young man with a taste for blood and a habit of transforming into a wolf, causing chaos in the local town.

The film does take a while to get going, the first glimpse of the titular werewolf doesn’t occur until the hour mark and the films only transformation scene (with makeup man Roy Ashton basing his creation on Jack Pierce’s makeup from Universal’s The Wolfman starring Lon Chaney Jr) appearing around ten minutes before the climax. So for this reason the film sometimes gets negative reviews, and is probably why a series of werewolf films didn’t appear from Hammer, as they did with the 3 other Universal Monsters, Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster and the Mummy.

Last night’s viewing, via the DVD from Final Cut Entertainment, rented from Lovefilm, was the first time in probably 20 years that I had seen it and I enjoyed it just as much as I did when I was a fledgling Horror fan in my early teens. I thought some of the performances were great, especially Richard Wordsworth as the beggar, Oliver Reed as Leon (who incidently ends up working in the local vineyard, a precursor to Reeds later battle with alcoholism maybe) and minor roles for Hammer’s favourite pub landlord-Michael Ripper, this time playing a drunken customer instead, a moustached Peter Sallis of Last of the Summer Wine, Wallace & Gromit and Taste the Blood of Dracula fame, as a town official and a young looking Warren Mitchell AKA Alf Garnett as the night watchman who is hired to dispose of the goat-throat-ripping wolf during the films first half hour.

For those interested in buying this DVD then I recommend it, even though it is quite pricey these days, as the picture looked excellent and probably as good as we’re likely to see until a HD upgrade arrives, there were no extras on the disc, however the steelbook edition is a 2 discer, so the extras will most likely be on the second disk.

Not as enjoyable as some of the other werewolf films, such as The Wolfman or more recent efforts like An American Werewolf in London or The Howling (recent? They’re 30 years old!), but still an enjoyable film for fans of Hammer and certainly one I would snap up in an instant if we ever get a Blu Ray release

Is that to indicate the dozens of ad breaks on The Horror Channel?

Ha ha, it must be how I set it out on the other thread, I just copied and pasted it here.
TBH there wasn't that many ad breaks and for once, the picture quality was half decent!
I ended up turning the Wrong Turn off the other night and putting the DVD in instead because the picture was ****ing awful looking

The Red Monks 1988

A woman marries a young man and moves in into his family mansion unaware of the past with a secret religious order of satanic monks.

This is a medicore horror produced by Lucia Fulci, although the film was made in 1988 it has a touch of a late 60s early 70s feel to it. The plot sometimes looses sense then claims it back. But does have some good things going for it. 6.5 out of 10.

keirarts 4th August 2017 08:30 AM

Anthropohagus, the beast.

Starting with a young couple getting butchered on the beach of a Greek Island, the film then moves to a group of tourists exploring the Greek islands by boat. They run into Tisa Farrow who asks for a lift and true to form, when you go somewhere with Tisa Farrow in a boat bad things happen.
The film takes its time to get back to the nastiness. A large chunk of the film is the group wandering the seemingly deserted island, finding the one lone survivor and attempting to recover their sailboat which drifted off when they went ashore. Eventually the beast shows up. It's George Eastman (Luigi Montefiori) in crusty faced makeup. His character has gone full cannibal after being stranded on a lifeboat and eating his wife and kid to survive. Once the blood starts flowing its fairly grim, though the scene of a fetus being removed and eaten looks very much like a rabbit smothered in ketchup.
The large gap in the middle of the film, where very little happens can probably be attributed to director Joe D'amato's ( Aristide Massaccesi) cheapness. He was somewhat notorious for scrimping to keep the budgets as low as possible. To his credit though it sort of works. I know a few people who might disagree but the film has a great atmosphere and while it may lack gore it makes up for this by generating a haunted atmosphere and a sense of impending doom. Its ultimately a very slight film in many ways but its one of those films that seems to improve with each viewing. The new 88 release is spiffy and looks great however it seems that the DNR applied to the previous release was masking some noticable print damage in places.

Future shock: the story of 2000AD

Superb documentary. It's fairly comprehensive including dealing with the Ropy issues they put out in the 90's that caused me to drift over to Vertigo titles along with a lot of their best talent. That said I have a deep fondness for 2000AD as I pretty much grew up reading it.

keirarts 4th August 2017 08:51 AM

Miracle mile.

Harry Washello (Anthony Edwards) has finally met the girl of his dreams. Julie Peters (Mare Winningham) is a waitress, she seems to like Harry as well so the pair agree to meet for a date. Harry's alarm fails to go off and he wakes at some ungodly hour of the night and in a panic he drives to the restaurant. Julie isn't there so Harry orders some food, while waiting he goes out for a smoke and to try and ring Julie on the payphone. The payphone begins ringing and Harry answers thinking Julie is calling back. Its not Julie but someone with a wrong number. The caller is based in a missile silo and is trying to reach his dad to warn him that America is locked in to nuclear war. They are firing all their missiles and can expect full retaliation within the hour. Realising its not a joke he decides to try and get his new Girlfriend to safety as the city begins to descend into chaos.
Miracle mile is one of those long neglected gems that passed me by initially. It's a shame as its an incredible film. Perhaps one that should be shown to the red faced yorkshire men on question time who berated Jeremy Corbyn for his refusal to fire first with Britains nuclear arsenal, its a film that really sells the absolute insanity of firing these weapons. Its a surprisingly dark and tragic film that left me reeling at the end. The pacing feels real-time and the sense of urgency is palpable. I highly recommend picking this up.

keirarts 4th August 2017 09:11 AM

Baby Blood

A woman working for a travelling circus is impregnated by a primordial creature that is brought to France hiding in a cheetah that has been captured for the Circus. The 'Baby' inside her begins communicating with her and directing her to kill so it can get the blood it needs to grow. The woman flees to Paris and begins working first as a waitress and then as a Taxi driver in order to both support herself and find victims to feed the creature growing in her womb.
Baby Blood is a fantastic horror. Its a precursor to the new wave of extreme French horror that led to films like Inside, Martyrs and Haute Tension. Its very bloody and surprisingly humorous, its even quite clever in its look at male attitudes towards women and gender identity. Especially with a central female horror character with a real sense of agency.

Night of Death

This one's been in a lot of my Top Ten tuesday lists. A young woman is found a job at a local care home by her fiancee. She settles into the job fairly easily however something seems a little off. Another nurse working there vanishes. We see her get eaten by the elderly residents so as an audience we know more than the character. This leads to a sense of uneasy tension as the woman begins to investigate the dark secret behind the care home.
Stylistically the film feels very much inspired by the films of Jean Rollin, the film has the feel of a nightmare where things don't always make sense but don't really need to. Highly recommended

keirarts 4th August 2017 09:32 AM

Stendhal syndrome

Ana, a detective from Rome is investigating a serial rapist who has progressed to killing his victims. She travels to Florence and receives a tip-off that the killer will be at a local museum. While there she experiences the Stendhal syndrome and enters a painting. Left disoriented she ends up falling victim to the killer Alfredo Grossi (Thomas Kretschmann). She's raped but manages to escape and begins to track him. This leads to a cat and mouse game between the killer and Ana. At the hour mark Argento throws a curveball and Ana actually seems to kill Grossi, however Ana continues to be tormented by the killer.
With the new Blue underground release of Stendahl (which is great btw) there seems to be an attempt to 'redeem' the movie critically. It's not a bad movie, its certainly not as awful as Dracula 3D, as horribly underwhelming as mother of tears or as mediocre as Giallo. In fact it has some terrific scenes that come close to vintage Argento, the only limitation being the limited early CGI that doesn't look great. The fact that lead actress Asia Argento is his daughter gives an added creepiness to proceedings. However my main complaint with Standahl remains. It really runs out of steam about 80 minutes in, yet continues on for another 40 minutes that should be a Repulsion-esque descent into madness but feels flat and uninvolving. Its still watchable and I enjoy it more than I used to however its far from his best work.

i initially just started reading Judge Dredd, and then explored through Nemesis the Warlock and ABC Warriors (you have to read these 2 together), and then Strontium Dog and Rogue Trooper.
With Dredd alone I find there are 2 ways to get through it. 1: get the case files for the chronological release (easiest way of doing so) or 2: research and read the main storylines - Cursed Earth, Day the Law Died; Apocalypse War etc.
Option 1 was how I got into Dredd.
Nemesis is easy to get into lore wise.

Picking up specific graphic novels is the best starting point. I know Dress is publishing from the beginning. It should be possible to get collected Nemesis the Warlock, roguectrooper ect. The 'complete' Halo Jones is highly recommended (the fact it's unfinished is delt with in the doc) I also highly recommend the collected Thargs future shocks which was one of my favourites growing up.
