Fincher's 'Zodiac'. Forgot how damn good this is...a masterpiece, in my opinion. Great set of extras as well. Re-watched a few scenes with Fincher's commentary.

In the final outing in the search for the Tall Man Reggie finds himself in a home with dementia or is he in the desert oh wait he is in hell oh wait no he is in a post apocalyptic world run by The Tall Man no no no its ok he's just trapped in a maze of green screen madness

This is some SyFy channel bullshit right here. The first four films in the series are great fun but this is a mess the the dialogue is beyond cheesy and the acting is terrible even Reggie who I love has been ruined with the stupid lines he has to deliver. The main offender here is the cgi everything is fake and that drives me crazy just takes me out of it straight away. This is One of those film I generally avoid. Do people even audition anymore for roles or do they just pick the first ten in line and that will do . Throughout the series there has been some good humour not laugh out loud but some funny moments and here is another thing lacking at a few points they tried but it just fell flat and just added to the ongoing misery.

A real shame the series had to end like this :nono:

4/10

Overall a great series that kept me entertained for the most part yeah I'm looking at you Ravager thanks for taking the role of party pooper you miserable bastard. The first four entries all tried something different and it's what kept the series interesting and fresh and also it was a brave thing to do some directors would think well that worked well left keep flogging it for along as the formula works so the series deserves extra points for that.

With what the series accomplished with the first four films even with the mess that Ravager was it takes nothing away from it so if we just ignore that happened we have a great series on our hands

8/10

Howling V: The Rebirth 1989

In 1489 Budapest, a massacre in a castle has taken place leaving two who commit suicide and a baby is left crying. 500 years later a group of people from different walks of life are invited to the re-open of the castle only to be told that one of them is a decendant of the baby that survived and is a werewolf.

Even though this does have the Howling title in it and previous sequels were not great this could have been a stand alone movie.

The plot is like the movie The Beast Must Die, a who dunnit and who is the wolf and a man on the hunt to destroy it but don't be put off by that.

This isn't a big budget movie and the werewolf and most of the killings is heard in screams and off camera, there is great suspense and growing tension that the actors make that does help and a gothic background score that blends in well with the movie. 7-8 out of 10.

When Evil Calls
An unpopular girl, gains a wish from a clown after her phone was broken by bullies. She wishes to be popular. Setting off a series of events which harms and kills fellow classmates.
This is awfully good, most of the acting is laughable, Chris Barrie seems to be uncaring which is great (I'm pretty sure I pissed him off at comic con a couple years ago when I mentioned this). And I'm curious if Dominic Pinon was actually drunk. Also Sean Pertwee is great.

Day of Reckoning 2016

A horde of creatures are released and wiped out most of man kind. 15 years later survivors are aware another attack will happen when there is a solar eclipse looming and seek shelter in a bunker designed to withstand the attack.

I watched this after it was recommended to me on youtube and thankfully it was free. The film stared off OK but was hoping it would improve, the CGI effects are laughable, as well as the bad acting from the main cast, Raymond J Barrie and Barbara Crampton couldn't even save this film, at the end I was rooting for the creatures to win. 1 out of 10.

Buboven 7th May 2018 09:27 PM

Watched Werner Herzog's Bad Luitenenant last night in the TV, as I had heard it was good. But as my first Herzog film, I didn't think it was that great. Pretty forgettable in fact and I found the weirder moments with the lizards just annoying more than anything else. Gets a 5/10 from me.

What does everyone else think of this film?

Recording Papillon, which is on BBC2 HD tonight at 11, so expect that to be much better!

Perhaps a bit long, but this is what I wrote when I reviewed Bad Lieutenant – Port of Call: New Orleans, a film I realise I haven't seen in a very long time:

According to Werner Herzog, his Bad Lieutenant is neither a sequel nor remake of Abel Ferrara's infamous 1992 film of the same name but more a crime thriller that just happens to share the same title. Furthermore, Herzog has said that he hasn't even seen Ferrara's film and even unsuccessfully tried to change the title of the film.

Subtitled Port of Call: New Orleans, Herzog's film is set in post-Katrina New Orleans and begins with Terrence McDonagh and his partner Stevie Pruit clearing out locker in the police station where they notice that there are too many transfer papers for one prisoner which indicates that he may well be still in his cell. Upon investigation, they find that there is someone in his cell which is rapidly filling with water. Rather than wait for the firefighters and after mocking the guy for a while, McDonagh jumps into the water and frees the prisoner but suffers a serious back injury in the process. Prescribed Vicodin by his doctor, who tells him that he will probably need the medication for the rest of his life, he is promoted from sergeant to lieutenant and awarded a medal for his conduct.

As with the titular character in House M.D., McDonagh becomes addicted to Vicodin and habitually uses cocaine and smokes marijuana in order to relieve the pain. He is given the task of tracking down those responsible for the execution style murders of six illegal immigrants from Senegal but, as a man with absolutely no scruples, he isn't afraid to bend or break the rules and arrest people purely so he can confiscate their drugs for his own personal use.

Things get quite complicated quite quickly with gang members called Midget and G who work for their leader, Big Fate who quite willingly comes to the police station with his lawyer but then a witness goes missing (sent to England by his grandmother) and, because of his connections in the drug world and eagerness for any information that the police have on him, Big Fate and McDonagh become partners so that McDonagh can have enough money to pay off his increasing gambling debts.

It is difficult to compare this to Abel Ferrara's film has, aside from the main character being a corrupt police officer who is addicted to drugs, the two have absolutely nothing in common. In any case, I would rather judge this film on its own merits than compare it to Ferrara's film which most people regard as a classic. It is quite unusual to watch a film starring Nicholas Cage and be immediately impressed by the strength of his performance as, with few exceptions, it has been easier to ridicule them praise the films in which Cage stars. This is one of those films like, Leaving Las Vegas, sees Cage do near enough what he is capable of doing rather than just go through the motions and woodenly go through the script and what is basically a paycheque movie.

With Werner Herzog directing, you're pretty much guaranteed that this film will never be exactly straightforward and will be likely to go off at tangents, feature extraordinary characters and situations and be one of the most bizarre things you have ever seen. Although it isn't up there with his collaborations with Klaus Kinski (Fitzcarraldo, Aguirre: Wrath of God or Woyzeck), Bad Lieutenant is still an extraordinary piece of filmmaking with an incredibly powerful central performance by Nicolas Cage who manages to harness that sort of wackiness that doesn't work in some films but seems perfect for this one. As McDonagh's girlfriend, Eva Mendes puts in one of her better screen performances as a drug abusing prostitute and you even have Val Kilmer as McDonagh's partner who shows that he can still act and doesn't mind putting in the hours in a supporting role.

This is a film that makes you realise that Werner Herzog is truly one of the most eccentric directors around and seemed attracted to off the wall projects that seem to feature a central character with whom he can empathise. There is nothing particularly straightforward about Bad Lieutenant – Port of Call: New Orleans and it is a film that will lose a large percentage of its viewers if they aren't 'dialled in' to Herzog's way of making films (and it is no surprise that it took many months to find a distributor). Even so, I think it is an extraordinarily well made movie which is well acted, well written and well directed.

The Disc

Extra Features
The making of isn't particularly lengthy (at just over 30 minutes) or detailed but does contain interviews with members of the principal cast and crew who talk about the film, how they became involved and what they make of it so far. It also shows how unpredictable the weather can be New Orleans with torrential downpours occurring every so often.

There is also a selection of interviews with six members of the cast and crew including Werner Herzog, Nicholas Cage and Eva Mendes.

The Picture
The 1080p widescreen picture is extremely good with vibrant colours, high detail levels throughout, even in the low light scenes, and excellent skin tones. A great deal of the film is fairly grim and gritty with a fairly muted palette but then there are other sequences that seem to reflect McDonagh's mindset so, when he is high, things are a great deal brighter and occasionally hyperreal.

The Sound
The only option is a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track that is a superb job with the dialogue and terrific sound mix that really puts you in McDonagh's place so that you, like him, really aren't sure which way things are going even though he seems utterly control of both the investigation and his own actions even though he isn't sure about what drugs he's taking: there is one scene where he calls on his girlfriend because he has accidentally snorted heroin thinking was cocaine and, because it needs to be at work in an hour, needs some cocaine to sort his brain out!

Final Thoughts
As I'm utterly sick of seeing Nicolas Cage gave mediocre after mediocre performance with the terrible or one thrown in knowing full well he is an extremely gifted actor, as his performance in Leaving Las Vegas proved, it is extremely refreshing and reassuring to see a film in which he seems to channel Klaus Kinski and play someone who is not just on the verge of madness, but is firmly there. Werner Herzog is one of those directors who you can trust to deliver a film that is brilliant yet challenging and yet is never straightforward even if it is a documentary about penguins!

Comparisons between this and Abel Ferrara's Bad Lieutenant are utterly pointless as they only share a title and an extremely intense central character. This is a film that is challenging yet rewarding and represents a return to form for Nicolas Cage.

I have this. It's decent enough and a bit of fun considering what it actually is.

It's not a film you know? It's a series of 2 minute mini movies originally for mobile phones that was edited together to get a dvd release.

Having fun with my 7 day free trial for Shudder.

First I watched Lake Mungo (2006)

A "Documentary" about a family dealing with their teenage daughter's drowning as they discover she lead a double life.

A definite allusion to Twin Peaks. The documentary style of this film really gripped me from the beginning. Its almost a film of two half's with the second half being the superior half. Jump scares don't affect me much, but that scene (you'll know what I mean if you've seen this) actually made my shout out loud because it genuinely frightened me. My heart was racing!!! Right after the shock, I let out a laugh, because the film actually got me! I'd love to feel that again. The shock was genuinely. Makes a change from all the cheap scares films try to pull off nowadays. It may be far too slow for some, but I really enjoyed this. 8/10

The Snorkel (1958).

Early Hammer thriller about a man who fakes his wife's suicide by gassing her in a sealed room whilst he hides under the floorboards using a snorkel to breathe. Looking like he's got away with it, he doesn't count on her daughter spoiling his plan.

Overall, The Snorkel is another great little suspense film, in the Hitchcock type style.
Released as part of Indicator's recent Hammer vol 2 boxset, with excellent picture and sound.

An essential purchase for Hammer fans 8/10.

Stake Land II (2017)

Much like the original Stake Land this is basically The Walking Dead lite. However this sequel to the much hyped 2010 effort loses points due to much of the pivotal action sequences taking place in near impenetrable darkness.

I watched a few films recently, I'm not good at reviewing so here are my scores and a brief synopsis. Pluto is a Korean school drama about the competitive nature of being top of the class, pretty melodramatic but has a nice violent conclusion!
The Muthers is on the Vinegar Syndrome bluray set, essentially a prison bust out movie that actually 3 genres for the price of one, Pirate, WiP and Jungle, pretty good fun! Murder on the Emerald Seas sees a cop going deep undercover as a beauty pageant contestant in very unconvincing drag  to find out who is murdering the winners of the pageant days after them claiming the crown, stupid but fun!
The other 4 don't really need an introduction. Black Panther was great fun, really enjoyed that one. Garden State was not as good as I remember, Multiple Maniacs far better than I remember and Two Thousand Maniacs was a first viewing and it wasn't the best thing I've seen, it was a bit tedious between the set pieces, however, the barrel roll was particularly good

My star ratings are;
* - Hated It
** - It was OK
*** - Liked It
**** - Loved It
***** - Amazing!

Eye of the Devil (1966)

That stalwart of horror, David Niven, plays the wealthy owner of a vineyard who is called back to the wine growing region from his palatial Paris apartment when the crop fails again. Deborah Kerr plays his wife who Niven tells to keep away from the vineyard along with their children. However due to Niven's erratic behaviour she naturally joins him there and falls head first into a nightmarish world of pagan ritual and human sacrifice.

J. Lee Thompson's film is a star studded affair. As well as the already mentioned Niven and Kerr, we are treated to Donald Pleasence, Flora Robson, Sharon Tate and an especially sinister David Hemmings. Playing out in an almost dreamlike world of creepy castles, dead doves, satanic rituals and one especially eerie sequence of Kerr alone in the woods haunted by hooded figures which grasp at her at every turn, the film is actually a bit of a treat.

Whilst in 2018 Eye of the Devil may give off Wicker Man type vibes it came a good seven years prior, so on release must have felt a wholly fresh, utterly downbeat, viewing experience which it still exudes today, especially with the black and white photography which adds to the foreboding and sinister nature of the film.

Recommended.

The Phantom from 10,000 Leagues (1955)

Some nonsense about an undersea man size monster, radioactive experiments, detectives, foreign agents... you know the drill. Far more ideas than the budget can stretch to.

In truth The Phantom from 10,000 Leagues is very poor. The Californian shoreline locations deceive into thinking the film is better than it is as does B-movie star Kent Taylor but the plot is all over the place and doesn't hold the attention and the monster attacks aren't frequent enough to put this in the so bad it's good bracket of entertainment.

The creature itself looks okay, but it's soon apparent it's not the sea monster the poster artwork predicts but a Creature from the Black Lagoon man in a suit.

Haven't seen this for years, and it's still an enjoyable film. Some genuinely tense and creepy moments. Now I wish I never watched witchfinder General a couple of months ago.

Atlantis Interceptors. DVD Grindhouse Collection Vol 2.

Never seen this before, Atlantis rises from the waters and opens it's biodome as the hero's fly in. Who knew Atlantis had motorcycle gangs? go figure. Lots of shooting and evasion mostly in the dark. This VHS rip is not as bad as some on the disc and is pure trash. Loved it, my kinda film. No DVD release anywhere except for a German DVD with no English options. Ripe to be picked up by 88 Films in their Italian Collection.

Brawl in Cell Block 99. Sky Movies.

Slow start as a frustrated guy turns to drug running to give him and his wife the life they dream of. It all goes well and his wife falls preggers before a pick-up goes wrong with our guy shooting two of his accomplices and then being arrested and sent down for 7 years.
The drug runners are not happy about this at all, kidnap his wife and threaten him with cutting up the unborn foetus in his wifes womb unless he takes out one of the guys involved, who is now in maximum security.
The violence, which has been perfunctionary till now, kicks into overdrive. If you don't squeal at the first arm break then you will later. Bones are broken, faces rubbed off on concrete and even a head kicked off down the toilet. My missus was squirming like a virgin at a gang bang, frequently hiding her face. I loved it.

Drive-in Delirium; The New Batch.

Another 175 trailers that takes about 6 hours to trawl through. Plus another 70 odd VHS trailers. I love trailer compilations and the three from Umbrella in Aussie land are my faves. With all 3 you have about 24 hours of madness. Pure bliss.

I watched Guardians Vol 2 at weekend and really wasn't impressed. The whole Kurt Russell plotline bored the pants off me in fact just a few days later and i can't even remember what it was about. However the film was saved from being a bomb in my eyes due to terrific turns from Dave Bautista as Drax, Michael Rooker as Yondu and Karen Gillan as Nebula. Their interaction just about made it worth watching.

As for 6/10 for Dracula? That was a truly dire film. I almost turned it off which is something i never do.

Ichi the Killer. Well Go USA BD.

Kakihara is one freaky dude! Loves inflicting pain and he has a talent for it! Not as freaky as Ichi though.... this boy has some serious issues! Miike went balls to the wall for this effort, so much so that even now our beloved censors - who are so much better than they used to be...- will not release it uncut. This release from Well Go is stunning picture wise and still has some miss translations that will make you giggle but is far and wide the best release of this classic. The good news is that although it states region A everywhere and on the cover, it appears region free. Well, it played on my PS4.

Video Nasties; Forbidden Horror and Dirty Synth Scores. BD-R.

I got this from Diabolik on a whim to bulk up my order. It uses soundtracks from the films with the best gory bits playing. It goes for the more recognized movies, Boogy Man, Burning, Possession, Fulci faves, Cannibals, Tenebrae, Bloody Moon, Don't Go in the House, Absurd, Anthro, etc. Only an hour long and not as good as you might think for the $25 bucks I paid.... but hey, it's only money.

The tourist with Johnny depp and Angelina jolie

A romantic crime thriller where she picks a stranger to try throw of the police etc, because her husband conned people out of billions .

Personally I found it slow, dull , and boring ,

The Forest 2016

A young women travels from America to Japan in search for her sister who went ino Aokigahara, Japan's suicide forest, is the forest haunted or is her imagination she playing mind tricks.

Based on the real suicide Forest thats made a name for itself and the background to it does help the creepy suspense of the movie with what appears to be a added twist to it does not do the movie any help, the big suspense hype to it never paid off even with a few jumps scenes that were unexpected, only thing that was good what the acting between the two main characters in the forest that seems to help the focus of "is it real or not". 5 out of 10.

Not a huge upgrade on the standard blu ray. While this is a good film. It's not really a good superhero film with Batman being quite underwhelming compared to how he should be, also.forgot just how annoying Bales Batman voice is, he's a far better Bruce Wayne than the Batman. Also Ra's Al Ghul is a disappointment compared to how he should be, the portrayal in Gotham is far better. 7/10

A huge improvement in nearly every way. The film belongs too Heath Ledger who gives a fantastic performance. Also vast improvement picture quality which is stunning in the Imax scenes. 9/10

Now watching Blade runner which is one of the benchmarks of ultra 4k.

I've seen a film called Grave Halloween (?) that is actually set in that forest.

Watching Blood & Black Lace again. Gosh it's bonny etc. Even Lucas gushed about it in the comm
