Passi di danza su una lama di rasoio/ Death Carries A Cane - clumsily made, middling but still watchable Giallo with some good sequences and ideas.

- Dracula, Island of Lost Souls, The Black Cat, Mark of the Vampire, Son of Frankenstein, The Ghost of Frankenstein - :nono:

:)

Greetings!

PS: Of course, Peter and Christopher are Horror greats - I just wanted a short and handsome list. ;)

After seeing the trailer for The Thing "prequel" I decided to watch JC's version last night. Rob Bottin's effects still look amazing after almost 30 years. I can't wait for them to make a sequel, which you just know will also be called The Thing. Bloody idiots!

Gojirosan 16th July 2011 09:37 AM

I hope there is never a sequel. I will be very upset if anyone ever tries to provide a definitive answer to whether MacReady or Childs were hosting the creature.

I was very pleased to find out the new film is set in the days before Carpenter's flick and not a remake or follow up.

Stephen@Cult Labs 16th July 2011 09:39 AM

Me too. I hate that they have called it THE THING. It's just mad.

Nemesis 16th July 2011 10:03 AM

Saw two last night:

The Last Chase - a fun 80s tv movie, but does have its weaknesses storyline-wise.

The Man From Nowhere - got this for £3 from Amazon Uk and it was a blast! It's one of those great kidnap/revenge films, similar to Man on Fire, and the action is terrific. It reminds me of those action thrillers that Hollywood used to do, but now seem to have forgotten how to make.

I know this is way off topic, but my list would have five names:

Boris Karloff
Béla Lugosi
Christopher Lee
Peter Cushing
Vincent Price

bdc 17th July 2011 10:57 AM

Pontypool (2008),enjoyed this one.

I wouldn't say it's a zombie movie though, reminded me more of Invasion of the Body Snatchers. ;)

I rarely watch newer genre films because I mostly find them disappointing but the Canadian ones seem to go down well mostly..

Rewatched The Devils Backbone on blu :)

Still a awesome movie!

Nosferatu@Cult Labs 17th July 2011 02:37 PM

Although it's not a film, I finished season two of True Blood a couple of nights ago and, because I know season three is going to drop in price shortly, began watching season three of Mad Men last night.

In terms of films, I watched the fairly dreadful Shark in Venice last night along with Shaft, which is still a great watch, and Woody Allen's Love and Death which I probably appreciated more now than I would have a year or so ago as Tolstoy's novels War and Peace and Anna Karenina is still fairly fresh in my mind.

I still say Lugosi is a bit wooden as an actor. Dracula although a fine film is spoilt by Lugosi doing a bad impersonation of Leslie Nielson. (Lugosi had a time machine, bet you didn't know that)

I finished True Blood season 2 a couple of months ago, thought it was a step up from the first series, which itself was very good.

* following on from another thread. My "to buy" wishlist of around £1000 is made up of quite a lot of tv series i need to catch up with - 5 series of the Simpsons, Family Guy, American Dad, Supernatural, Smallville, Las Vegas, Dallas, CSI, 2 and a half Men. They all need at least one series buying, in some cases 3 or 4. Together with all the films and that gorgeous complete Avengers box set at £140 totals around a grand.

Probably won't get them all this week. I need to write a brilliant film review site like you Nos, then i could get half my films for free. ;)

it's just $$$$ at the end of the day

If I ever have a kid, I'd be letting them watch all that kind of stuff from the day their born. I'd want to raise my kid on those movies!

If so, then yes you are a bad person.

Not necessarily. But there are certainly many movies out there which are more suitable for seven-year-olds. And also quite a few films which are better than Evil Dead II.

Greetings!

As long as she knew what she was watching was make-believe and you were there to explain any queries she had about the film, certainly not. Children probably should be exposed to horror films which are suitable for them and there are some excellent 'kid friendly' horror films around -- the last Harry Potter film is supposed to be one of them.

Said Harry Potter film has just raked in $762m worldwide in 3 days

Oh, I showed her how it was all done and she was fine. She said it was the scariest film she'd ever seen and thought Bruce Campbell was drunk :D

I don't have a problem showing her certain horror films - it's not like I'd ever show her CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST or something like that. She saw HOUSE a few months back and loved it. The only problem is I get moaned at by my sisters and when I remind them that I've been watching horror since I was about 4 their answer is usually 'yeah, and look how you turned out!':D

All kids should watch horror films, it's a great part of growing up.

I definitely agree.

As long as you deliver some kind of "commentary" like "This scene was fake. They used blablabla to achieve this effect...Never do this to your classmates.", you should prevent the worst.

But for my taste, seven years is a bit too young for a start. It also depends on your niece, of course - I don't know how clever and how forward she is. Judging from your posts, she's possibly brisk and quick like a ten year old. That would mean you're on the safe side.

Greetings!

PS: Evil Dead II is quite funny - but it's definitely not the masterpiece people make you believe. It's the same with Shaun of the Dead - everybody thinks it's the funniest movie ever, but in fact you only get a mediocre flick with a few nice laughs.

PPS: :focus:

You should just reply 'You didn't watch them and look how you turned out!'

Demoncrat 18th July 2011 10:40 AM

watched HWAS again...what a film, do think its mair mad than Machete...

The Final Programme...finally bloody got it mair like...a loverly print, and still truely nothing like it out there....Jon Finch, Graham Crowden, David Warner et al dance through a framework based on Moorcock's unique vision ahem. like brit cinema? watch it! like odd 70s films? watch it! ahem. i am very fond of this, did you notice?
also i notice Madonna of the Seven Moons is on this week (bbc2?) last shown during that unseen brit season, tis an odd little film....

As someone who has works with children, my professional opinion is no:) But it does depend on the child. Some of the kids I look after talk to me about Chucky, Freddy and Jason movies they have seen and enjoyed. Whereas there is a mature 11 year old child who was frightened when we watched ...........Scooby Doo the movie:pound: So trust your own instinct;)

Pete 18th July 2011 12:49 PM

She's very grown up for her age which is why I let her watch it. I know she wont be traumatised by it or anything. In fact she even laughed at some of the FX. Like I said, I would never, ever show her anything like CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST or something similarly extreme.

Demdike@Cult Labs 18th July 2011 12:54 PM

Its not a lot different to me watching Doctor Who as a 5 ,6,7 year old in the seventies. There was no video then and the only horror on tv tended to be Hammer, Amicus, Universal etc.

Children today live in a very different media led world to the seventies, i mean Hollywood produces pg horror films (Prom Night, Twilight etc) and kid friendly scares such as Buffy and Charmed. which are directly aimed at children.

Gojirosan 18th July 2011 03:16 PM

The MGM R1 DVD of Squirm looks fantastic! Great film.

And I had forgotten how lovely Patricia Pearcy was!

pedromonkey 18th July 2011 03:32 PM

watched Liam Neeson film Unknown last night which was pretty good, not really on the level of Taken but has a pretty good car chase in it. Then i watched The Cowboys starring John Wayne, great western about a rancher who hires a group of kids to help him get his cattle 400 miles. Bruce Dern is very evil as the villain. One of Waynes best performances...

I watched The Boss.

The final part of the Milieu Trilogy, from the excellent Fernando Di Leo.

Henry Silva stars as a hitman working for a Mafia family headed by the always watchable Richard Conte out for revenge on a rival Mafia family after a bombing of a Palermo cinema.

The film is a well paced affair full of plot twists, assasination attempts and J&B bottles, part of the action takes place in a warehouse full of crates of the stuff.

As with the rest of this boxset from Raro, the picture quality is gorgeous with a good clear soundtrack. I watched the film dubbed as all the actors spoke in English and i found myself lip reading rather than reading the subtitles.

Gojirosan 18th July 2011 05:57 PM

Prom Night (2008) - well one the one hand I liked that is wasn't a remake, sharing just the title and occasion with the earlier film, but on the other hand it was mechanical, superficial, derivative and unengaging.

What a heap of crap.

Which reminds me, I watched My Soul To Take last night. A complete mess from start to finish with an unneccessarily complex expository ending. Made me feel a bit sad that this is what Wes Craven ends up with when he writes and directs his own stuff.

Gojirosan 18th July 2011 10:16 PM

My Soul To Take was awful, just awful!

I just watched The Long Hair Of Death. Not seen it for a very long time. The plotting was far, far worse then I remember, but this was the only disappointment as the atmosphere floods from the screen and the film looks so beautiful. Although not as good as, say, Mask Of Satan, this is a primo Italian Gothic.

And Barbara Steele is perfect, as ever.

The film would benefit from a restored English friendly release, I reckon. Didn't the BBC's Moviedrome screening show a nice clean print? Most of the DVDs out there are pretty grim in AV terms, by all accounts.

CINE-APOCALYPSE: MY SOUL TO TAKE (2010) REVIEW

Prince_Vajda 18th July 2011 10:39 PM

I just finished watching Peeping Tom for the first time in my life. I wanted to write a short review, but I simply can't. I am still stunned. Stunned is the word. Or is it mesmerised? I really don't know. I only know that I LOVED watching this movie. Cinematography, score, and, of course, mainly Carl Boehm (or Karlheinz Böhm, to his friends) - 'impressive' is a word that sounds convincing. But it does not even come close to doing justice to this masterpiece. :faint:

Phew. It's a fantastic thing to find such a gem on a great Blu-ray today. But you know what makes me feel very sad? The fact that Peeping Tom nearly totally ruined both Powell's and Boehm's careers - instead of boosting it! :(

Greetings!

nekromantik 19th July 2011 12:40 AM

Just seen the Cronenberg flick Rabid.

It was ok I thought. Its my least fav out of his films I seen so far.

necroluciferia 19th July 2011 01:15 PM

Been away for a while so this thread seems like a good place to get back into things :)

A few films I've watched over the past month or so -

Female Prisoner #701: Scorpion
Hobo With A Shotgun - Great fun, thoroughly enjoyed this!
Street Trash
Ken Park

Amateur Porn Star Killer 1 - most boring and pointless film I've seen in a long time, possibly ever! So bad I watched half of it on fast-forward.
Vegetarierinnen Pt 1 - marginally less pointless than APS but still incredibly tedious. Even the ending didn't make up for the first 105 minutes. Bad excuse for a porno.
A Prophet - found this one very hard work. Disappointing.
The Beyond/House By The Cemetery - christened my new flat with some good old Fulci goodness
Wax Mask - picked up in the new poundland in Huddersfield. This was a lot better than I expected it to be - quite atmospheric and an intriguing plot that kept me gripped throughout. Very Italian
House Of Whipcord - First Pete Walker film I've seen so wasn't too sure what to expect but found it highly enjoyable! Love it's mix of sleaziness and creepy atmosphere!
Eugenie: The Story Of Her Journey Into Perversion - Based on De Sade's 'Philosophy In The Boudoir', this is not bad for a Jess Franco film - it's set at a reasonable pace with plenty of softcore nudity and stylishly pervy dream sequences.

James Morton 19th July 2011 08:33 PM

What films have you seen recently?

BLOW OUT - just received the Criterion sp.ed.
a brilliant thriller from Brian De Palma
CHAINED HEAT - finally uncut and Sybil Danning...............she was one of the sexiest actresses in the 80's
