SEEN ANY BRITISH GEMS RECENTLY? Yeah two- TOWER OF EVIL-Scorpion have done a tremendous job of the Blu Ray which totally smokes any DVD release.Class-a defininite precursor to the slasher boom indeed, and rather graphic for a 1972 Brit exploiter! Obviously Russell's masterpiece set the benchmark the year before. SPIKE ISLAND-Great coming of age number, especially for those who grew up with the 'Madchester' music scene. Roll on next week's Meadow's MADE OF STONE....

And MADE OF STONE is indeed,as one expects from Meadows,a cracker.

Another short British gem is the BFI's SLEEPWALKER. Talk about atmospheric! Talking of the BFI.....ROBIN REDBREAST is well worth a punt and could be seen as a precursor to The Wicker Man. Less effective is their DEAD OF NIGHT series, with the only outstanding segment being A Woman Sobbing with Anna Massey. Although quite entertaining,The Exorcism is titled very misleadingly and Return Flight a rather good cure for insomnia! Robin Redbreast and Sleepwalker are well worth a punt though!

Fragment Of Fear is a neat Giallo-esque early 70s thriller starring David Hemmings. Worth checking out - it's out on US dvd from Columbia.

I remember seeing Fragment of Fear on the BBC, it's a good film. I also thought it had a Giallo feel to it, especially with David Hemmings appearing in it.

I'm the same with Hemmings. Always associate him with Gialli, despite the fact he's from Guildford. 115 credits and we associate him with three films - Blow Up, Deep Red and The Heroin Busters. |

Hannie Caulder (1971) One of that rare(ish) breed - The British western. Raquel Welch leads a great cast - Robert Culp, Christopher Lee, Ernest Borgnine and Jack Elam in this brutal revenge western. Welch is raped and her husband murdered by Borgnine and his two partners, Elam and Strother Martin. Out for revenge she is helped and trained in the ways of a gunfighter by Culp and Lee. There's much bloody mayhem before the final showdown with the three killers, and despite it being a tad formulaic, the film has one or two different aspects, (such as part of it being filmed on the sea shore) which make this fast paced blood spiller a film which remains memorable forty odd years later. |
