3. Star Wars – Main Theme

This must be appropriately placed – at least in the top three – because it's a stirring piece of music in its own right and, when linked with Star Wars, is an iconic piece of cinema. Chapeau, John Barry.

What's going to be number one? Lord of the Rings? Schindler's List?

What else is there?

They are playing the entire suite on Classic FM, now into the Imperial March part of the Star Wars theme, and the range and scope of the composition shows why it's placed so highly on the list – it's a phenomenal piece of music.

2. Schindler's List – Main Theme

The 11th of John Williams' entries in this list and a remarkable piece of music, one that is in danger of making me cry as I listen to it and ripeness.

Take a bow, Howard Shore

A beautiful piece of music and one deserving to be Hans Zimmer's highest-placed entry in this top 100 list.

I recently watched a BBC documentary on Hans Zimmer, and while it was amusing and interesting, it didn't mention Gladiator at all but devoted a huge chunk of time to Jack Sparrow and Chris Nolan.

This is my favourite piece from the Gladiator soundtrack, Now We Are Free but The Battle is a very close second, it always gives me goosebumps.

That's cheating.

The main theme is from Star Wars whilst The Imperial March is from The Empire Strikes Back. By rights both should have been in this list as both are separate entities.

The Imperial March is one of the main components that makes Empire so good.

Throw in the stunning Duel of the Fates from The Phantom Menace and there should in my opinion have been three John Williams Star Wars tracks in this list not one.

I have only seen Lord Of The Rings about twice and never realised it was Howard Shore who done the soundtrack. The score for Gandalf's Death was used in the teaser trailer for Man Of Steel.

It's a brilliant soundtrack, isn't there? The CD by Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard contains many wonderful pieces of music, many of them make me visualise parts of the film.

I was surprised Duel of the Fates wasn't in the top 100, but understand why they took the 'Suite' from the original Star Wars trilogy as one piece of music if it's been performed as a composition and played on Classic FM that way.

It's a brilliant piece of music – it's interesting that Hans Zimmer reuses Earth from Gladiator on his soundtrack for Man of Steel.

As well as Duel of the Fates, a soundtrack I was surprised wasn't on the list was Jean de Florette/Manon des Sources, a beautifully uplifting and emotional piece.

Earth/Now We Are Free was used on 10's of trailers from that period, it ended up being the go-to music to advertise films but wasn't in the soundtrack of anything but Gladiator. One which really stick in my mind is House of Flying Daggers which is a Hong Kong wuxia epic and has nothing to do with Hans Zimmer :)
