"Sometimes the truth is lost in battle! From Ralph Nelson, the acclaimed director of Soldier in the Rain, Father Goose, Duel at Diablo, Charly and The Wilby Conspiracy, comes this graphic and uncompromising anti-racist western starring Candice Bergen (The Hunting Party), Peter Strauss (The Jericho Mile) and Donald Pleasence (The Flesh and the Fiends). After a cavalry patrol is ambushed by the Cheyenne, the two survivors, Honus Gent (Strauss), a soldier highly devoted to his duty, and Cresta (Bergen), a white woman who had lived with Native Americans for two years, must reach the safety of the nearest fort. As they travel, Honus feels a growing affection for Cresta, but he is disgusted that her sympathies lie more with the Cheyenne than the U.S. government. As they arrive at the cavalry outpost on the eve of a planned attack on a Cheyenne village, Honus will finally learn who’s been telling him the truth. Written by John Gay (Run Silent, Run Deep) from a novel by Theodore V. Olsen (The Stalking Moon), Soldier Blue features a rousing score by the great Roy Budd (Get Carter, The Black Windmill) and a strong supporting cast that includes John Anderson (Cotton Comes to Harlem), Jorge Rivero (Rio Lobo), Dana Elcar (The Nude Bomb) and director Nelson under the pseudonym Alf Elson." He's the worst 'name' actor i've ever come across. Crimes at the Dark House, Murder in the Red Barn, Sweeney Todd - all utter rubbish. I should lap these movies up being a Gothic horror fan but he ruins them all with his terrible over acting. It's as if he thinks he's in a silent film the way he 'acts'. Somebody should have said that you don't need to act like that when you can use words to convey emotions. |

'Two Mules for Sister Sara' (1970) Release date: October 27 "From Don Siegel, the legendary director of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Coogan’s Bluff, Dirty Harry, Charley Varrick, The Shootist and Escape from Alcatraz, comes this classic western starring screen legends Clint Eastwood (The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, High Plains Drifter) and Shirley MacLaine (Sweet Charity, Irma La Douce). Eastwood is a hard-hitting drifter who rides into town and single-handedly rescues a local nun (MacLaine) from a gang of bandits. After meeting a band of Mexican revolutionaries bent on resisting the French occupation of Mexico, the cowboy and Sister Sara decide to join forces with the freedom fighters and set off on a deadly mission to capture the enemy’s garrison. But along the way, a steamy romance develops between them when the soft-spoken hero discovers the nun is not what she seems. Ending with a violent climax at the well-protected fort, this action-packed western classic cemented Eastwood’s status as a true cinematic superstar. Featuring a masterful score by the great Ennio Morricone (A Fistful of Dollars)." Special features:

I've heard about Curse of the Undead before but never seen it. A bit of a curio really, is it the first ever horror western? So Kino can manage four new horror releases for October. And all released on dvd as well as blu. |

There were several poverty row western/horror hybrids in the 30s and 40s that were along the lines of phantom outlaws, haunted mines and ranches that turned out to be fronts for criminal activity. Even John Wayne appeared in one called Haunted Gold. I think Curse of the Undead was the first with overtly supernatural elements |

Yeah, it's okay Dem. The vampire is a cowboy. No fangs or stuff like that and can walk around in the sun but it hurts his eyes. Not particularly Gothic atmospheric apart from a sinister music score. Lots of neck biting and gun play. Worth checking out though and it's Universal. |
