'After Midnight / The Battery'

Release date: June 8

"A BROKEN HEART WAS BAD ENOUGH.

Ten years into his small-town romance with Abby (Brea Grant, A Ghost Story), bartender Hank (Jeremy Gardner, Bliss) wakes up alone in an empty home with nothing but a cryptic parting note for company. As Hank drinks himself into heartbreak and depression, Abby s sudden departure soon becomes the least of his concerns as a mysterious monster starts clawing at his door on a nightly basis.

As the threat outside his door intensifies, Hank calls on Abby s police officer brother Shane (Justin Benson, Synchronic) and best friend Wade (Henry Zebrowski, The Wolf of Wall Street) for help, but with no trace of the monster and his behaviour becoming more erratic his friends remain unconvinced of the creature lurking outside and Hank slips further into his own paranoia and loneliness.

Expertly directed by Jeremy Gardner and Christian Stella (Tex Montana Will Survive!) and co-produced by the team behind Spring and The Endless, After Midnight is a twisted genre-bending gem with mesmerising performances and sublime cinematography about breaking up, moving on and facing your monsters both real and imaginary."

I've had no problem with deliveries from Music Magpie this week. Took the usual 2/3 days from receiving a dispatch email.

The last post we had was a week ago and that was a council tax letter, not seen any posties since then or even had junk mail.

Yeah, i think junk mail is gone :woot: so perhaps if you don't have anything to actually be delivered then they'll not call by..

If i remember rightly this week i've had letters from my building society, gardening firm Thompson and Morgan sent a catalogue plus three discs on separate days from Music Magpie.

Come rain, come snow, come....

Oh sod it, let's all pretend we have Corona & bunk off, I'msure someone else will keep the country going while I "self isolate".

Looks like the post will have a lot to get through once this is over! Easier to get rid of it now than to hide & hope it's gone when you come back.

'Silent Running' (1972) - Coming soon to Blu-ray from Arrow Video!

"In a future where all flora is extinct on Earth, an astronaut is given orders to destroy the last of Earth's botany, kept in a greenhouse aboard a spacecraft."

Nosferatu@Cult Labs 28th March 2020 07:12 PM

Brilliant news. Silent Running is one of the all-time great science fiction films, one which would make a great double bill with 2001: A Space Odyssey, and should come with a huge array of extra features, hopefully the beautiful Joan Baez soundtrack.

Nostalgic 28th March 2020 07:26 PM

Did the premium collection already knock this out?

It was part of Eureka's Masters of Cinema collection.

Wondering if the Arrow release is just for the US & Canada.

nosferatu42 28th March 2020 07:30 PM

Masters of Cinema did a Blu ray previously as i got the steelbook for a mate.

Dave Boy 28th March 2020 09:33 PM

Yeah, I got The Masters Of Cinema release as well.

Rob4 29th March 2020 02:13 PM

Last week we gave our son a break from his school work to watch a movie of our choice and coincidentally we chose Silent Running. Not, of course, something he would normally choose. He's quite a cynical teenager but he was still moved, proving the movie still retains its power and relevance after all these years.

I have release and its very good, with an isolated music track and a good commentary by Bruce Dern and Douglas Trumbull. I would hope there are more extra features to be had; I know Mark Kermode is a huge fan of the film and has been responsible for excellent documentaries and commentary tracks.

If there are more extra features and there is scope for a 2K or 4K scan of the original source material, that would be a significant upgrade on the Masters of Cinema release.

Does Beyond The Door have the 2 commentary tracks that are on the Code Red disc? Somebody on bluray.com says it does but have never seen them mentioned anywhere else.

Pretty sure it was ZFE because I remember they made some kind of fuss that it was limited to 500 or something and only from their own webstore? I bought the steelbook myself.

NEW UK TITLE: Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence (Blu-ray)

David Bowie stars in Nagisa Oshima’s 1983 Palme d’Or-nominated portrait of resilience, pride, friendship and obsession among four very different men

"David Bowie stars in Nagisa Oshima’s 1983 Palme d’Or-nominated portrait of resilience, pride, friendship and obsession among four very different men confined in the stifling jungle heat of a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp in Java during World War II.

In 1942, British officer Major Jack Celliers (Bowie) is captured by Japanese soldiers, and after a brutal trial sent, physically debilitated but indomitable in mind, to a POW camp overseen by the zealous Captain Yonoi (Ryuichi Sakamoto). Celliers’ stubbornness sees him locked in a battle of wills with the camp’s new commandant, a man obsessed with discipline and the glory of Imperial Japan who becomes unnaturally preoccupied with the young Major, while Lieutenant Colonel Lawrence (Tom Conti), the only inmate with a degree of sympathy for Japanese culture and an understanding of the language, attempts to bridge the divide through his friendship with Yonoi’s second-in-command, Sergeant Hara (Takeshi Kitano), a man possessing a surprising degree of compassion beneath his cruel façade.

Produced by Jeremy Thomas (The Last Emperor, The Sheltering Sky), it was the first English-language film by Oshima (Death by Hanging, In the Realm of the Senses, Gohatto), a leading light of Japanese New Wave cinema, and provided breakthrough big-screen roles for comedian Takeshi Kitano and musician Ryuichi Sakamoto, who also composed the film’s hauntingly memorable BAFTA-winning score. This powerful wartime drama was adapted from Laurens van der Post’s autobiographical novel ‘The Seed and the Sower’ (1963) by screenwriter Paul Mayersberg (The Man Who Fell to Earth)."

Special features:
  • High Definition Blu-ray (1080p) presentation
  • Original uncompressed stereo audio
  • The Man Who Left His Soul on Film (1983), Paul Joyce’s 82-minute documentary profile of Nagisa Oshima
  • The Oshima Gang (1983), a 30-minute documentary following the film’s cast and makers at the 1983 Cannes Film Festival
  • Video interviews with producer Jeremy Thomas and actor-composer Ryuichi Sakamoto
  • Exclusive newly filmed interview with critic Tony Rayns
  • Original theatrical trailer
  • Image gallery
  • Reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Sam Hadley
  • FIRST PRESSING ONLY: Illustrated collector’s booklet featuring new writing on the film by Jasper Sharp

Nosferatu@Cult Labs 3rd April 2020 06:12 PM

I'm tempted to buy it for the feature length The Man Who Left His Soul On Film documentary, but until it's a bit cheaper, I'll stick with the StudioCanal dual format release.

Nostalgic 4th April 2020 03:01 PM

Had an email from amazon saying Beyond The Door had shipped...really hope it turns up! Will post with updates.

Due to a technical glitch during the authoring of our BLACK ANGEL release, the film’s original 1.33:1 aspect ratio image was mistakenly altered to appear within a 1.28:1 ratio. This is incorrect and has resulted in a slight vertical compression to the image.

Our initial stock is being dispatched, so whilst we will fix this on future pressings, we will be setting up a disc replacement service for anyone who has already pre-ordered this release. The new encode is now ready so we anticipate that replacement discs will be available shortly. We will of course follow up with another post once the replacement disc programme is live so please do keep an eye on our page for updates.

Many thanks for your understanding and continued support!"
