'Slugs' specs (separate DVD and Blu-Ray releases) THEY SLIME. THEY OOZE. THEY KILL. From celebrated Spanish director Juan Piquer Simón, the man behind the truly demented slasher flick Pieces (1982), comes a terrifying tale of mutant slugs on the rampage in small-town America. The townsfolk of a rural community are dying in strange and gruesome circumstances. Following the trail of horrifically mutilated cadavers, resident health inspector Mike Brady is on the case to piece together the mystery. He soon comes to a terrifying conclusion – giant slugs are breeding in the sewers beneath the town, and they’re making a meal of the locals! Based on the novel by acclaimed British horror author Shaun Hutson, Slugs outdoes its creature feature peers by adding an extra dose of gross-out gore into the equation, culminating in one of the most squirm-inducing animal attack movies ever to slither its way across screens. 'The Hills Have Eyes' specs (separate DVD and Blu-Ray releases) THE LUCKY ONES DIED FIRST… Horror master Wes Craven achieved critical and commercial success with the likes of Scream and A Nightmare on Elm Street – but for many genre fans, the director’s seminal 1977 effort The Hills Have Eyes remains his masterpiece. Taking a detour whilst on route to Los Angeles, the Carter family run into trouble when their campervan breaks down in the middle of the desert. Stranded, the family find themselves at the mercy of a group of monstrous cannibals lurking in the surrounding hills. With their lives under threat, the Carters are forced to fight back by any means necessary. As gruelling a viewing experience today as it was upon initial release, The Hills Have Eyes stands alongside the likes of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Night of the Living Dead as one of the defining moments in American horror cinema. I would think that most people who like Hills or Slugs and are DVD only will already own them, so the Blu should win out in this case. A fairer comparison would to release something that has never been available on either format before.

Good point, but it may be an indication of the numbers willing to double-dip on the same format solely for new extra features and artwork.

I enjoyed the documentary Mark of the Times on the Mark of the Devil blu / dvd combo. In fact it's better than the film itself which has always been a bit of an inferior melodrama in comparison to Witchfinder General and even Franco's Bloody Judge. High Rising's doc was insightful and informative even though there was a little too much praise for Michael Armstrong's films , though considering it's on one of his films it's hardly surprising. Nice to see David McGillivray, Kim Newman and Norman J Warren discussing the way British horror evolved during the 70's leaving the Gothic phase behind and producing more individualistic films. It's been a while since i watched the film, the cut UK dvd about ten years ago, and was quietly chuffed to notice it was filmed at a small town on the Danube called Durnstein which i visited four years ago. Gorgeous place, if you ever get the chance etc. |
