This Week @ Cult Labs

Suspiria

It’s that time of year again. The sun’s out and spring is in the air which means that, once again, I am forced to face the horrors of bare legs and fake tan. By the time I’ve finished Fake Baking the bathroom will look like the loo-scene from Street Trash! Or I could just distract myself with Suspiria on Blu-ray. While I decide what to do, why don’t I tell you what’s been happening over at Cult Labs? This week, you have the chance to influence the artwork for Arrow’s forthcoming Inferno DVD, get excited about Day of the Dead on Blu-ray and win Argento’s The Stendhal Syndrome courtesy of Kyle and his Comp Corner. I’ve picked out these and many more titbits for your reading-pleasure while I go and debate whether March is too early for sunglasses.

DESIGN THE ARTWORK FOR INFERNO!

Well, OK, not quite. But we’re giving you the chance to have you say on what goes on the box of Arrow’s forthcoming release of Argento’s classic. The Cult Labs guru, Almar, had this to say: “I LOVE the underwater scene in Inferno but I think that would be very hard to paint without looking almost comical – who has some bright ideas?” In answer to this call, springjack has suggested “Mother Tenebrarum with the white cat in the middle of the burning building. Then, in the style of 80´s vhs covers, why not put a little kazanian on one side and a little alchemist on the other,” but here at Cult Labs we are a democracy and believe all forum members should have a say. Maybe you have an idea how Almar’s underwater scene could be painted without looking comical? Or maybe you have an alternative vision to Almar and springjack? Either way, head on over to the Inferno thread to get your views heard while you have the opportunity. We look forward to hearing your suggestions!

THERE’S SOMETHING GOING ON IN THE LABORATORY

More exciting than discussing whether Fake Bake beats St. Tropez are some of the discussions going on over at Cult Labs. Catching my eye this week are:

Arrow Films – Day of the Dead Blu-ray – The Build Up

Day of the Dead

Are you anticipating the Day of the Dead Blu-ray release from Arrow as much as we are? It’s out 29 March but in the meantime you can discuss everything Day on this thread. The thread is currently anticipating news of the Wilson Bros review and Daemonia‘s interview with Joe Pilato. Speaking of Mr Pilato, the thread also holds a link to TGGPodcast‘s interview with the Day of the Dead veteran. This is a lively thread and will only get livelier as 29 March draws nearer!

Bronx Warriors/Bronx Warriors 2/New Barbarians

As Shameless’s lesser-spotted Bronx Warriors set continues to be rarer than a UK barbeque summer the discussion rages on. Where can you find it? What’s the deal with HMV? Has the new stock reached the UK yet? The answers to these questions can be found over at the Bronx Warriors thread where news will be announced as Almar has it. In the meantime, those of us who managed to get a copy can always discuss its sheer awesomeness.

Shameless Art Gallery

Over at Cult Labs we love fan art and this thread gives members the chance to upload their Shameless artwork. Featuring work from Halloween_22,AshtonLamontNeil and pedromonkey the thread shows that Cult Labs members don’t just discuss their interests in cult cinema but use their amazing talents to produce brilliant work to express their interests in a different way. Pop over to this thread to be inspired to do something different or just to appreciate the talent of your fellow Labbers.

The Wicker Man (Robin Hardy)

Feel the urge to discuss what is, arguably, the best British film ever made? Over in the Brit Horror section of The Horror Shack you can find an interesting discussion of Robin Hardy’s seminal The Wicker Man. You can even see Senior Mod,reaper72‘s holiday snaps from Kirkudbright where quite a few scenes were filmed.

Halloween II (Rob Zombie)

Feel the urge to discuss what is, arguably, the worst American film ever made? OK, maybe Rob Zombies H2 isn’t that bad but it gets a lot of people worked up. Did you hate it? Love it? Want to string Zombie up by his (red)neck and beat him with a stick? Whatever your opinion, voice it here at out H2 thread. darthelvis has just got it on Blu-ray and is going to give it another chance. Find out whether high-definition does any favours for this turd of a movie. I doubt it, but you never know!

The Steven Seagal Thread

Does what it says on the tin. This is the place where you can discuss Seagalogy until the cows come home. To have their asses kicked, obviously. The Steven Seagal Thread is part of the Damage Depot –  a place for all things action so if Seagal doesn’t float your boat then check out some of the other action-themed threads here.

THE BEST OF THE REST

Other threads that caught my eye this week:

BLOG MENTIONS

Read truckturner’s thoughts on the creation of his short film, i, in his brand new blog over at Cult Labs. It’s one of the most interesting blogs I’ve read and is one of many great ones being written in the Lab.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“I’d like to know what inspired him to appear in The Omen remake. Was it a sudden burst of senility?” – vincenzo contemplates Giovanni Lombardo Radice’s dubious decision.

KYLE’S COMP CORNER

The Card Player

We might be officially out of recession but if you’re still feeling the pinch, relax! Every week our resident CompetitionsMod, iluvdvds gives you the chance to put your wallet away and win your next DVD or Blu-ray! This week, he’s giving away copies of Dario Argento’s The Card Player on DVD so head on over to Kyle’s Comp Corner where you can also find details of how to win. Good luck!

WELCOME NEWBIES

I’d like to welcome all new members to the Cult Labs community: metaldudStef HutchinsoncalacoemazzariniukBringer Of Funerals and |cy. Make yourselves at home!

AND FINALLY…

This has been the pilot edition of the Cult Labs newsletter. From now on it should be going out every Thursday direct to your inboxes. If you have any ideas or feedback, you can email me or PM me over at the Cult Labs forum! I can’t promise to include everything but I will try.

Right, I’ve made my decision: fake tan and Suspiria! Why can’t a girl have both?

Until next week,

Sarah@Cult Labs.
