Your Favourite Horror Film from 1962
1962 was a year for some brilliant horror films, but which one is your favourite? What makes it special to you? When did you first see it? Would you recommend it to the uninitiated? Sometimes it's a hard decision to just pick one film (even when you're limiting it to a single year!), but my favourite film of 1962 is... Carnival of Souls - Herk Harvey Carnival of Souls is a horror classic. Despite it's low budget, it manages to blend some great locations and camera work with an eerie and engaging well-paced story. Trailer: Runners Up: The Awful Dr. Orloff Brainiac The Day of the Triffids Night of the Eagle Panic in Year Zero The Phantom of the Opera Premature Burial Tales of Terror Tower of London Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? Christ,I do love my British classics....NIGHT OF THE EAGLE for me-all these old films were taken so seriously, the actors at the time gave it their all.

Anyone else reckon Hervey's classic Carnival of Souls had a wee influence on Mr Romero's Night of the Living Dead?

I am not choosing a horror as such. The film i pick is really an 18th century tale of smuggling. However the horror comes in the form of skeletons on horseback terrorising any one who dares cross the marshes come nightfall. Captain Clegg / Night Creatures |

I LOVE Carnival of Souls!!! Recently in New Zealand, a theatre company did a live performance of the film. A small explanation: the soundtrack was played live by a small orchestra, and actors - dressed all in shades of grey - acted the entire film, with the actual film playing as a backdrop...nice! I wasn't in NZ at the time, but those I know who did see it were thrilled!

Well, it's three for three so far and I'm in agreement with you again. Carnival of Souls is a masterpiece which improves on every viewing and I really should buy the Criterion Collection version. It's one of those films which is unnerving and unsettling rather than an assault on the senses -- The Texas Chain Saw Massacre it is not and is more like Don't Look Now in terms of the growing dread and sense of unease.

I'd probably go with Whatever Happened To Baby Jane? for this year. I love me some Ol' Skool Hollywood Gothic!

So far, loving Bizarre's choices. I'll have to agree and go with Carnival of Souls. Though, I'd also toss up Cape Fear.
