Warner Brothers have huge issues over the content and according to both Russell and Mark Kermode are unlikely to change their stance. Having been close to re issue a couple of years ago Russell even did a commentary track that will not see the light of day either! Can't see it ever getting a new DVD reissue.

I have the official DVD releases from Spain and Korea and they're both the cut R print. The same version is available to download from iTunes here in the UK. I agree, it's looking very unlikely that the longer version(s) of the film will ever get an official release.

I'm not familiar with Warner's stance on this film - what are their issues with the film exactly?

They're running scared from the religious Right, apparently.

Ah, I see. The anti-religious overtones the film has. Strange that The Exorcist is okay as a flagship title for the studio though...

I don't think it's strange. The Exorcist is very much a pro-church film whereas The Devils is very critical of Catholicism. Besides, Exorcist has made a ton of money over the years and The Devils is seen as little more than an art film in Warner Bros's eyes so it's easy to see why they have neglected/suppressed it.

I'm pretty sure that if The Devils would make them millions when released Warners wouldn't give a jot about the religious controversy.

The Devils has been released numerous times on VHS and shown on TV, plus it has been released on DVD in Spain which is quite a religious country, why get uptight now?

They also have new footage, documentaries and commentaries available for a new release, why would they bother if they're not going to release it?

It seems to me that either they are building up the anticipation for the release or someone at the top has a personal problem with the film and is blocking it. In which case when they leave it will be released.

I remember this being on TV when I was younger, my dad taped it for me and did his own editing, cutting out any scene he thought was unsuitable for my 12 year old eyes. I think the final version I saw was about 10 mins long ha ha, would love this to be released on DVD/ BD so I could finally see what my dad didn't want me to see all those years ago!

The boat can leave now, tell the crew

It is ridiculous in this day and age, that such an important film is left to languish due to cold corporate feet. after sitting through the torture porn "epic" The Passion of the Christ, i cant see how any film preceding this could really offend anyone, i mean Catholic priests taking the high moral ground for anything is irony in excelsis IMO!!:mmph:

As the Directors Cut was recently screened at the BFI (July 29th this year) The Devils | BFI There's got to be some kind of plan for a release.... surely!
