Remakes aside, I don't see Horror (in all it's guises) being shallow and shite this decade at all.
You want that...Wallow in the 90's.

Reading through this thread reminds me how much I've missed out on.

My favourites are 28 Days Later and... er...

hmm...

Does Shaun of the Dead count?

Definitely. I'd have to dig deep to pick a top ten...

A throwback to '80's slashers without the violence and gore.

someone said that Cherry Falls was shite, i disagree with that, Cherry Falls was a very clever spoof of slasher movie conventions, it threw alot of injokes into the mix, the killer was a sort of norman Bates homage, the whole virgin thing is played upon really well, the dialog is tight and it has Michael Biehn as a sheriff. after scream 1, this is the one of the best proto-slashers of the decade.

for me the best horrors of the '00s are...

Devil's Rejects
My Bloody Valentine (remake)
The Children
Land and Diary of the dead
Babysitter Wanted
Cherry Falls
[rec]
28 days/weeks later
Dawn of the dead (remake)
The Mist
Pontypool
The cottage (it was good)
Outpost
Pan's Labyrinth
Exorcism of Emily Rose

im sure there are more but for the life of me i can't remember them all.

That was me! "And whilst I disagree with what you say I'll defend to the death your right to say it" !

But seriously, the reasons you listed for liking it, are probably the reasons I don't like it... not a big fan of in-jokes in modern horror films - which is surprising as I love Troma and Family Guy... Plus I didn't think much of the cast or the dialogue; Michael Biehn was good though - the best thing about the film IMO.
