I couldn't agree more. Mother Of Tears was painful to watch.

I've gotta say, Paul, the things that irked you about MoT didn't bother me at all. I think they added to the film's charm. I like campy films from Italy and other countries and applied that taste to my mindset while watching this film. It worked a treat for me, it's saddening to that others dislike it so strongly.

I love cheesy Euro horror too, Cloud and, PHANTOM OF THE OPERA aside, am not the sort of person that slags off all of Argento's post-TENEBRAE output either. I just expected more from a film that concluded the tale of the Three Mothers. It really should have been better. Had Argento eliminated all reference to SUSPIRIA and INFERNO I would have enjoyed MOTHER OF TEARS on a kitschy level, but as a sequel to those films it failed for me.

We'll have to agree to disagree then on this.

What's your opinion on Phenomena? That's another that's always divided his fanbase right down the middle. I regard it as a classic.

I wouldn't go as far as to call PHENOMENA a classic but I do rate it. As an aside, PHENOMENA was the first Argento flick I saw, actually, albeit on the Palace Video release that was the BBFC-cut, shorter version of the flick, as CREEPERS.

Out of all the stuff he has directed, there's only a small handful that I've not liked and these are PHANTOM OF THE OPERA and MOTHER OF TEARS. I didn't like JENIFER—one of his Masters Of Horror pieces—either.

I think I'm going to give this another shot tonight, picked it up for £4.50, if nothing else it updates my Argento collection. I found it very disappointing on first viewing, but I owe it to Dario to give it another go I suppose.

Despite being cut, cut, then cut again I kept the Palace VHS for the cover alone. Great stuff.
