Question Your Favourite Horror Film from 2003

2003 was a year for some decent horror films, but which one is your favourite? What makes it special to you? When did you first see it? Would you recommend it to the uninitiated?

Sometimes it's a hard decision to just pick one film (even when you're limiting it to a single year!), but my favourite film of 2003 is...

Gozu - Takashi Miike

One of the most bizarre Miike films (and that's saying a lot!) I've ever seen, Gozu, whilst not straight up horror in the conventional sense is certainly an assault on the senses. Fantastically warped and full of unusual imagery it has to be seen to be believed!

Trailer:

Runners Up:
Gothika
Haute Tension
House of 1000 Corpses
King of the Ants
Love Object
A Tale of Two Sisters

GOZU is just bizarre but I like it. HAUTE TENSION and HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES are my other faves from 2003.

2003 seems like a very good year to me.

Wrong Turn
Willard
House of 1000 Corpses
A Tale of Two Sisters
Underworld
Haute Tension
Freddy vs Jason
Darkness Falls
House of the Dead

My choice (blasphemy alert) is The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
Probably the best remake yet. Gory, unsettling, R Lee Ermey, scary and above all brilliant. Far better than the original

I actually quite enjoyed the TCM remake, probably because (even bigger blasphemy alert!) I'm not a huge fan of the original.

A Tale of Two Sisters, Haute Tension, and House of 1000 Corpses would be my direct runners up to Gozu.

TCM remake for me... shame "the Beginning' was terrible.... two hours of Ermey yelling.

The Manson Family, easily. You would think this was made in the early 70's while on one hell of a acid trip...plenty of nightmarish images and really shocking footage here. There's nothing quite like a Jim Van Bebber movie...You can sense he would never compromise his art,and it took him years to finish his Manson movie, but he did.I did also enjoy Haute Tension and Freddy Vs Jason (in a dumb way),but Beyond Re-Animator was a let down.2003 really felt like turning point towards more grittier, gorier cinema after the sorry 90's.There's a scene at the beginning of Flesh for the Beast where I think Sergio Jones is running scared from something after him and falls face down in a pile of steaming guts. That's how it felt.Look how much they can show gore in Freddy Vs Jason with R-rating,it was about ****ing time.As a huge fan of TCSM I really didn't know what to make of Platinum Dunes' idea of a remake, but after seeing it more than once I guess it didn't hurt too much. It's certainly gritty and bleak, but still you can feel the well-oiled moneymaking machine rumbling under it.

Blasphemy alert only for your last sentence - the original TCM is ahead of most other horror flicks; a real must see in the way it really SHOCKS the audience - psychoterror at its best.

However, you're right about TCM (2003) being a great remake - although a lot bloodier and quite straight forward, it's one of the better modern horror movies. That's why I call it my favourite for 2003 - closely followed by Switchblade Romance.

Greetings!

A tie between Haute Tension and A Tale Of Two Sisters.

Worst of the year? Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake, Darkness Falls but probably the worst was the abysmal Underworld.

A Tale of Two Sisters was excellent but i have no Desire to ever watch it again. Once you know the jumps it lessens the films effect.

I actually like Darkness Falls, quite underrated i thought.
