"Breaking News" 4/5

This was a rewatch for me and I think I enjoyed it even more the second time around. I'm a sucker for cinematic style and this film is full of it. I've mentioned it before on other forums, but the first eight minutes of this is a continuous crane shot that follows the build up to a blazing street shoot out. The timing and organisation for that sequence shows some great directorial flair. What then follows is fast and furious and perhaps a little bit predictable but this never lets up the tension. Some of the shoot outs are a little reminicent of those in "Heat", but if you are going to be influenced by anything you can't go far wrong with that one.

Kyle 28th December 2009 09:00 AM

sounds great! i might watch this tonight

Stephen@Cult Labs 28th December 2009 10:23 AM

Bought this a few weeks ago for £2.99.Some of the acting is awful (Billy Blanks).Pretty standard cop and vigilante bringing down the bad guys early 90's action movie. The fim was initially refused a certificate by the BBFC before being granted an 18 after the distributor removed over 7mins and the BBFC removed over another minute  Fortunately times have changed and the film is uncut now....and I didn't even think it was particularly violent :ohwell:

Yes this wasn't a popular film with Mr Ferman, and the BBFC cuts list is pretty heavy. Most of them were to assorted kicks and blows.

Yup.

He has made a few films over the years. "They Live" is still my favourite.

Anyone seen Death Racer's staring the ICP.
Very low budget but great action scenes.

I also liked Death Race . (Jason Straton) (forgive spelling)

I love action films that feature vechiles,.

I also enjoyed Cobra, with Sly Stallone.

.

Sorry Vips, caught this on the horror channel the other night and thought it was a steaming pile of turd. It's shot really badly, acted really really badly and ICP should stick to music. really truely an awful film.

Stephen@Cult Labs 31st December 2009 10:03 AM

Watched Midnight Run last night.Couldn't tell you how many times I've seen this film but it's a LOT! One of DeNiro's best non-ganster roles and some great performances from Charles Grodin,Joe Pantoliano,Dennis Farina and Yaphet Kotto. And a cracking score by long time Sam Raimi collaborator,Danny Elfman.

District 13 - Ultimatum - I watched this before heading off into the snow this morning. It's way too much like the first film in parts, (Some of it feels like a scene for scene remake!) but still a lot of fun. I like this kind of action but this sequel really could have done with a few more original ideas to make it worthwhile. :(

The English dub is very funny though. It's almost worth recommending it for that.

pedromonkey 6th January 2010 10:07 PM

just watched....

House Of Fury - Fun action comedy. 'Nuff said. ;)

check out this trailer. it's for a film called From Paris With Love, it stars John Travolta and is directed by the man who made District 13 and Taken....

Watched Jackie Chan Who Am I on channel 5 tonight. Not Jackies best but there are some good stunts and the final fight with the two guys on the roof top is pretty good, it looks likes they had no wires when standing right on the edge of the building. The run down the slightly inclined skyscraper wall is impressive too.

Philleh 11th January 2010 09:44 AM

Watched Universal Solider: Regenerated.

Surprisingly good film! The action is MMA focused and aggressive. Andrei Aralofski (sp?) of UFC fame is in it and he's brutal!!

An all time classic from Jackie Chan and a not so classic directed by John Woo.

Did I read correctly that the film ignores Universal Soldier:The Return?

Philleh 11th January 2010 12:45 PM

I've not seen that one, sorry dude.

But this one focuses on the 're-intigation' of Van Dammage and a clone if Dolph (who's only in it for about 20 mins). It's Andei's film if I'm honest! Ha.

"Gamer" from the makers of "Crank": Nice modern version of the "Running Man" theme peppered with a dose of "Johnny Mnenonic"- with Michael C. "Dexter" Hall in great heavyweight action villian mode.:thumb:

This one ran into massive problems with the German censors who only granted it an "18" cert after cuts for the theatrical run.

Just watched the "15" rated uncut Finnish DVD and was pleasantly surprised by this flick, as there aren't many modern actioners which meet my tastes.
