I got these goodies at a Spanish flea market. I was very happy, because they feature some of the early appearances of one of my favourite characters - Lobo.

Yup! It looks to me like the first few issues wer for tying up loose ends from "Extremis" and the next 3 or 4 setting up the main story arc, which is a doozy! ENJOY!

Weekly Digital Comic Book update 14/09/13

2000AD Prog 1849
: Everything concludes. A virtualy Dredd-less Judge Dredd story has the ending I predicted a month ago, but thats not really a bad thing as Bender is prime Dredd villeinige to the bone and I lookforward to Wagner bringing him back. Age of Wolf is finished once and for all thank god, as does the rather meager celabration that was Slaine: Book of Scars. Still, one last outing for langley before handing it over to Simon Davis. Looking forward to that. And then The Ten Seconders....phwow.
Weekly Shonen Jump UK #41: Bleach is back! Hurray! My first ever comic book series enters it's final run as the evil Vandenreich set's to wipe out the soul reaper race. Elsewhere Jaco: The Galactic Patrolman continues to be the heart of the comic, while One-Punch Man is best ****ing thing since sliced bread. One Piece is wonderful as ever. World Trigger and Blue Exorcist are two fun albait slightly filler series. Toriko....exists. Dragon Ball Z is....****ing Dragon Ball Z. And all for 50p a week! Best ****ing bargain out there!
Cla$$war #2: HOLLY **** BALLS! A comic that uses a superhero, American setting...to show everything that is wrong with the American way of life and culture. It take's ball's to write something like that. And it takes balls of brass to make it THIS good.
Locke and Key: Volume 1. Welcome to Lovecraft: I'll post a full review tomorrow. Suffice to say though, best £2.99 of my life. :woot:

Next week:
2000AD Prog 1850
WSJ #42
Hetalia Axis Powers #3
Mars Attacks the Transfomers! #1

Still gotta read #1 of Saga, Manhattan Projects, and No Place Like Home, but heres this weeks pulls...Minus the Prog as I need to renew my sub.

One thing no one ever told me about going digital. Practice extreme self control...

WSJ continues to be top bargain at 50p a week for, well, Onepunch-Man, Jaco The Galactic Patrolman and Bleach are all hitting the spot at the moment and anyone of them is worth the cover price alone. One Piece was absent this week, unlike YuGiOh (shame) thank god its monthly. Toriko is really starting to get my interest, though the damn science lessons do get quite grating. World Trigger is a nice staple, as per, like a new pair of slippers that still have a few pinches to work out. And False Love....really am getting quite tired of it by this point. Replace it with the wonderful Bakuman or Gintama any day.

Darkstalkers #0 was a 10 page intro to Udons take on Capcoms video game series. Never played the games, but I'm a fan of the anime, and that was enough for me to give it a try. And it entertainingly light fluff, though the inner Jim Cambell in me has grown quite tired of big breasted maidens such as this. It was fun though, and thats all. It'll stay around for now.

All Crime Comics #1 was a wonderful homage to the classic crime thrillers of yestercentury. Easily my fave pick of the week and I'm looking forward to these immensely.

Cla$$War #3 continues the brilliance of its previous issues as I reach the half way point, while Hetalia Axis Powers is being dropped fortnightly to when ever I need a good laugh. Its good, but not two weekly material.

Godzilla IDW Ongoing vol. 1 was a great alternative universe take on the classic Toho monster mash. Enjoyed it immensely and got the next two volumes while they where cheap.

Mars Attacks the Transfomers (!) does what is says on the tin, and its ****ing glorious. Matt Frank is the master of getting the usually expressionless Cybertronions to pull a menagerie of amazing facial features and his martians aren't bad either!

Small haul this week, only the weeklies.

WSJ features the conclusion to Jaco, which I will miss something terrible. Adventurer mentioned he wasnt sure if hee njoyed the Dragon Ball links, just to clarify, ALL Toriyamas manga is set in the DB universe and I can highly reccomend DB over DBZ as its a classic adventure manga much more in the vein of Jaco than its sequel. Elsewhere Toriko pisses me off with its quite tasteless depiction of female life (which seemingly involves cooking and looking prity while reading. **** that.) and Nisokoi continues the downwards spiral. On the other hand, I actualy enjoyed this weeks Naruto for once, though I cant think why, Bleach featured some damn good action scenes, OnePunch-Man has another good crack at an old super hero comic book trope (the ungrateful rescuee), World Trigger is a nice addition to the rauster even if it doesnt contribute anything original per say. Oh, and an ad for a new series starting next week. Judging by the outline, itll be either Buso Renkin or Psyren. Both series are long concluded though so I cant see why it would be any of them and would rather have Cross Menage back.

In 2000AD, Dredd is lead by Kilgore along with Joyce and Pax into the undercity where they encounter the soldiers of the Goblin King utilising stolen judge manta tanks lost during Chaos Day. Michael Carroll writes good Dredd and is for my money, one of the two natural replacements to the might Wagner. Nice art to. In Brass Sun the search continues for the note book that could save the solar system as an all out invasion breaks out with The Duchess determined to over through the corrupt Duke. For my money, this has potential to be one of the greatest things ever published in the prog. Sublime story telling and sumptuous art, its a classic from the off. Flesh can **** off with its nasty, monolog, sexist tail tucked between its legs. It should be immensely enjoyable, instead its weighed under by Pat Mills tendency to include bloody revolutionary opinions. Damnation Station is enjoyable and Aquila is great fun as per.

While I can agree with you, young Hawklet, on "Dredd", "Aquilla", and "Damnation Station" I'm finding the current story arc of "Brass Sun" a little slow. The first book drew me in and I enjoyed the unique ideas behind it but I'll reserve judgement on this until further down the line. As for "Flesh" and revolutionary opinions well... don't forget that there is as much revolutionary action in "Brass Sun", "Aquilla" and "Insurrection" (over in "The Megazine")! Revolution is the backbone of the "Flesh" story, without it there's no conflict, just cowboys herding dinosaurs!

Sometimes y've just got to go with the flow instead o' readin' too much into a story. Dissectin' stories f' t' sake of it is what ruined English Lit for me!

Hawkmonger 5th October 2013 08:42 AM

By revolutionary, troggi, I meant anti-establishment. Now don't get me wrong, i'm fairly anti-establishment myself, but Mr Mills puts subtext in in such a heavy handed manner, produces dialogue that is so utterly clunky, that its offsetting and alienating.

I wish Comixology had some handy Astro City collections so I'm not spending loads on trying to get caught up on decades old material! Its really good though!
Nice little haul this week...
WSJ- i'll get to Seraph of the End in a bit, now i'll just run through the regulars as per. One Piece, Yay. Naruto, Nay. Bleach, yay. Nisokoi, nay. Toriko, meh. OnePunch Man, all the yay. World Trigger, yay. Blue Exorcist, yay. And DBZ, meh. Now, Seraph of the End....prity kuch whatThe Adventurer said but I saw the grittier attitude coming. Most Jump Squared titles have a grity opening chapter (Well, D.Gray-Man, Blue Exorcist and Tegami Bachi did anyway. Claymore just got GRITTIER) and fall into typical shonen mode there after. But I did enjoy This opening chapter and look forward to a month of catch ups. Should be another winner for me, the art is very nice actually with great atmosphere.

Mars Attacks Judge Dredd #1- OK, finally got it. And its a solid fair, miles ahead of the ongoing IDW series. Not as mad cap as other Ewing Dredd stories but it has his flare to it. Could be a winner.

Grindhouse: The Doors Open at Midnight #1- start of a new anthology series from Dark Horse. Each couple of issues will be almost self contained, and will change quarterly. Each story will hark back to the age of low budget cinema making hen the laughable was common. This story was entitled Bee Vixens from Mars and reads like a Robert Rodriguez script. It was funny and dumb as a bed post. I liked it.

Must have been an error. It up to £8.99. Still good value, though I'm waiting until I reach Judge Dredd Complete Case files 5 and "Judge Death Lives!" Before I get to the point where Anderson got her spin-off. Im kinda retentive about chronology like that, god knows how I cope being a Doctor Who fan!:fear:

I own Case Files Vol. 01 to 06 now. I was a little bit disappointed by Vol 03 (because I expected the first Judge Death Story to be more epic, didn't like some of the artists and it had a lot less pages than all the other Case Files), but loved all the others ones (yes, Vol. 1 too - I have no idea why some people claim that it is unimportant). I have read almost all of Vol. 06 now and the stories are amazing (Dredd gets "pregnant" with an alien - now I didn't expect that one) - looking forward to Vol. 07 :)

Youll hear what I have to say about volume 3 on tuesday. Suffice say though, I love it, and don't mind that Judge Death was such a small story. It kinda of makes sense, considering how good and increasingly long each Death story is leading up to the unparalleled Necropolis (arguably where their appearances should have ended).

Weekly Digital Pulls 23/10/13

Small haul again....

2000AD- I really don't get what Damnation Station is actually about. Aliens who are stigmatised by humans and hunted as vermin are in fact the victims of "The Enemy" and while the rest of humanities forces focus on killing roaming aliens families a small group of 7 exist to wipe out "The Enemy"? OK, maybe this wasn't the best way to be introduced to a potentials long running series. Aquila on the other hand is just my cup of tea!

WSJ- Cross Menage returns for a finale one-shot. I found the series quite charming and was certainly better than the other slice of life series in the fold, the utterly horrible Nisokoi. It had good art, robust and varied characters, funny comedy and romance with genuine levity. Pity no one in Japan seemed to have boughht into it and it got canceled after 4 volumes.:coolblue: oh, and theres no One-Punch Man or Seraph of the End this week. ****.:pout:

EDIT: Oh yeah! Judge Dredd complete case files number 3! Well, as above really. This is when It think Wagner started to take the character and world seriously. It started to feel like the beginning of when you could tell it was a seminal punk comic book series, and not aimed at children. My favourite story besides Judge Death is probably Father Earth....or Sob Stories....or Blood of Satanus.....or UMPTY CANDY! Gosh, such a great collection!

Plus, finally Read Attack on Titan volume 2. Original idea after original idea after original idea. I can highly recommend this.

2000AD Prog 1855- new Dredd tale sounds just my cup of tea. People complain that The dideases aren't futuristic enough. But really, Cholera and Dissantry don't exactly change very much over time. Nice Richardson artwork, suits the feel very well.
Still not liking either Flesh or Damnation Station. But gutted that Aquila has ended so soon. Can't wait for the next series.

Cla$$War #6- Aaaaaaand thats a wrap. Filled with juicy quality. This has been an amazing series and frankly I want senior Williams to get onto that much belated second series as the cliffhanger just begs for it.

Samurai Jack #1- Samurai Jack was a favourite of mine when Cartoon Network actualy had more than one decent show on. Indeed, I've started to rewatch the series this week and it's stood the teste if time very well.
In this series Jack will be hunting down the key to time The Threads of Time in yet another attempt to return to his time zone. Essential reading for me and it played out like an episode of the series. Utterly wonderful.

WSJ #48- Seraph of the End continues to be a meh series for me. I like it's art a lot, but the story is just so samey. Also the production schedule looks set to be set off again next week. Last week there was no SotE or One-Punch Man. This week we have a one-shot OPM, but One Piece is off. Next week theres another OPM one-shot (i'm not complaining about that at least!) and SotE is off again! Even though there was a schedule for it to run for 5 weeks solid! Whats going on!?
That being said, this weeks Bleach really made me happy. Shinji Hirako came back. He's probably my favourite character in the entire series.

Now, young Hawklet, you know that I don't always agree with you but this time I'm with you on "Damnation Station". The first series was great and showed some potential but so far this series has been a bit of a mess. I know what they're gettin' at, I just wish they'd go about it with a little more exposition! It feels like they're triyin' too hard for a big reveal at the end without givin' us some small insights along the way.

Good call on "Dredd", the artwork is tremendous and goes well with the story. You're right about the diseases too, cholera and dysentery were good enough for our ancestors why not for our descendants?

"Aquila" was a tad brief wasn't it? It seems like it is setting up a great story arc though! Fingers crossed.

"Flesh" is still a thorn in your side, eh? Ne'er mind kiddo, it won't be around for ever! Personally, I'm signed up f' the rodeo, pal!

The oddity in the pack is still "Brass Sun" for me. I'm enjoying the whole "steampunk" feel to it whilst not quite liking the story as much, which is weird!

Let's see what's in store this week eh?

Hawkmonger 29th October 2013 10:21 PM

I could really do with reading the first Damnation Station series. If it ever get's collected i'll add it to my purchase pile. Al Ewing with Simon Davis? My dream duo!

Aquila has the potential to be my new Nikolai Dante. Ggggg~RENNIE has't quite hit it's stride yet though, but an over hanging story arc reminiscent of Slaine's Invasion's series could spell the dawn of a classic. Also, did they get a Blackhawk The Intergalactic Gladiator reference in last week? Gotta wonder whats going on there....

Flesh has all the ingredients of an AMAZING series and I should really enjoy it. But Pat seem's to completely miss the point that it's supposed to be a 70's pulp fun, not one of his Toxic! 90's eco-stories. Maybe he's just getting on a bit, I really like Flesh book 1, and Legend of Shammana to. But Texas, Midnight Cowboys and Badlanders are hardly the best instalments in the Flesh saga. Nice art mind, Mckay can draw a ****ing nice Dinosaur.

I loved Brass Sun first time round, but after a great first episode this series seem's to be a bit flat. I'm still hooked on it, just not quite as much as I was before.

I'm old skool, Hawk! I like my reading material to take up actual shelf space. I understand that electronic literature is the way forward but there is nothing like the feel and smell of new print and, although there are many ways to lose paper-based literature (i,e, fire, flood, pests, etc.) I will never have to delete an older piece to make room for a new piece. My Kindle Fire comes out 4 or 5 times a day but rarely for reading, too many other distractions!

Hawkmonger 31st October 2013 06:48 AM

Yeah, can't beat the smell and feel of new comic book day. Sadly, being a student even if I used the lovely Disposable Heroes, I still wouldn't have the money and space for so many weeklies and monthlies. I still buy trade's (i'll be uploading a video in the next couple of weeks with my comic, dvd and bd pick ups) but honestly I can't spare the shelf space for anything else.mi also save a little bit of money. Not a lot but enough to justify the switch for me.

Here's a list of upcoming titles i'll be picking up from Nov 13 a Feb 14....
- Miracle Man Reboot (Jan 14 - ???)
- Revolutionary War (Jan 14 - Aug 14)
- The Maxx....MAXXIMISED (Nov 13 - ???)
- Doctor Who IDW Winter Annual 2013 (Dec 13)
- Rogue Trooper IDW (Jan 14 - ???)
- Black Science (Nov 13 - ???)

Added to this, Mars Attacks Judge Dredd, All Crime comics and possibly Rocket Girl will all tie up in December.

2000AD Prog 1856 - Hell must have frozen over. I actualy enjoyed Flesh this week. Well, the second half at least. That's progress I guess. Damnation Station still leaves me cold while Brass Sun has a rather tender moment. Added to that the great Jesus Redondo returning and the prospect of a Return to Armageddon tpb next year, a nice little prog.

Thought Bubble Anthology 2012 - Had no idea this was up on comixology, finaly get to read the Strontium Dog / Elephantmen crossover. Ironicly that was simply a nice extra, as there are some cracking independent comics here. Well worth the wait and can't wait for the Dredd / Flask crossover on the 23rd.

Hetalia Axis Powers #4 - America once again show's his vanity (England: "Get a world map you egotistical scrote!") and Italy accidently bombs Germany.....hijinks ensue.

Weekly Shonen Jump #49 - One-Punch Man! One-Punch Man! Oh how I love thee! Another one-shot that wont contribute to the over hanging story arc of the S-Class heroes and villeins but it was certainly fun. I really can't reccomend this series enough, it's easily the best comic i've read all year.

Weekly digital pulls 10/11/13

2000AD prog 1857: As per really. Nice conclusion to a decent three part Dredd story, the Thriller continues in fine form (nice to have Mr. Redondo back), Flesh continues to be barely 'meh' worthy, and Brass Sun is the dogs balls. And at last, Damnation Station is both engaging and entertaining! What a cracking episode!

Attack on Titan chapter 51: Trying out this Crunchyroll/ Kodansha monthly subscription deal. £2 a month for new chapter of AoT, Fairy Tail, Space Brothers and others. I prefer this to scanlations because i'm actually contributing to the market, sadly thought the publishers wont allow images to be saved to devices, thus why the image bellow is a scanlation. This months chapter os AoT was a lot slower than previous. Our heroes escaped (at a price. Ymer, Bertholt and Reiner where left behind seemingly to be devoured by Titans), and are rescued by the Garrison. Meanwhile, Erwin, Levi, Hanji, Connie, and Pixis make a shocking discovery.....

Sword and Sorcery #1: new title from DC. A rebooted Amethyst and a post apocalyptic retelling of Beowulf. Could be interesting. Great art on both and solid story telling. Might be one for a trade though.....

Grindhouse #2 (Bee Vixons from Mars part 2): I have rarely experienced such a rapid drop in quality in a comic. Where as last months issue was a fun take on the classic drive in theatre trope of the 50's, this issue failed to capture the same vibes and just felt like an awful dross. I'll have to check out the preview before buying the next issue. Such a shame.

Weekly Shonen Jump #50: Toriko is stupid as hell but I'm really enjoying it for some reason. Like One Piece before it this one has taken some time to grow on me, but now it has i'm really glad to call myself a fan. Some whacky ideas in this crack child.:pop2:

2000AD prog 1858 - A new world in Brass Sun. One that has gone one step further than the last and is now a total waste land. The speed of this series is quiet necessarily but I really don't mind. It feels very natural and 'home grown'. It takes it's time to get us invested and when the shit hits the fan it's usually in a big way.

Mars Attacks Judge Dredd #3 - The Martians invade MC1!!! What more do you want me to say, it's just so freaking fun!

Rocket Girl #2 - I think the pacing of this series will better fit a trade. It's certainly a fun series and i'm enjoying it a lot, but it just kinda ebbs and flows. Might drop it and wait for the TPB.

Weekly Shonen Jump #51 - WTF is up with Pica's design? He looks like something out of a gonzo movie! Really enjoying One Piece at the moment, both in flash back in in present. Ussops, Franky's and Robins reactions to the soldiers announcement of a suicide attack had me in stitches.

Much belated haul from last week. This weeks will be up tomorrow.

2000AD prog 1861 - The line up is pretty smashing atm. Really enjoying everything with only Flesh starting to show signs of crapness again.

Samurai Jack #2 - Fun, light hearted, fluff. With great action scenes and distinct art. It's a winner.

WSJ 52 - Nisokoi hit's 100. Rather hoped it would end, but the last few chapters have actually been quite readable. Naruto was off this week, so thats another plus I guess. Really want One Punch-Man to return to the ongoing story arc though, as nice as the filler chapter have been. And how good is Kubo's art atm!?

"The Department of Monsterology"

Just finished this first issue masterpiece and am already mourning the fact that it's only a 4 issue run!
