I think Natural Born Killers was pulled due to the Dunblane massacre, Vince, which took place just after the video was classified and was about to be released.

Spot on Angel. Have amended. So many horrific events back then that I often get them mixed up. Ditto for the Hungerford massacre.

BBFC case study on Natural Born Killers here.

Nice link, Vince. I had a read of a few of the case studies, but was appalled to read this regarding Dawn of the Dead and what Ferman says about the 'editing'....

Quote:
In September 1979 Ferman wrote to the distributor exclaiming that “a tour de force of virtuoso editing has transformed this potential reject from a disgusting and desensitising wallow in the ghoulish details of violence and horror to a strong, but more conventional action piece…The cutting is not only skilful, but creative, and I think it has actually improved a number of the sequences by making the audience notice the emotions of the characters and the horror of the situation instead of being deadened by blood and gore”.
I was also surprised to read that the Board unanimously hated the film, with one Examiner refusing to sit in on any debate over the film. What...not a single horror fan amongst them..?

Typical arrogance from Ferman I'm afraid. If you get the chance, pick up the old EIV video version and compare it to the uncut print. Nothing 'skilful' or 'creative' whatsoever about it.

The original Night Of The Living Dead was also heavily cut in 1969, though the 1980 cinema re-release restored the cuts.

Sweet Lord! I had forgotten about that thing! I think I ended up using it as a blank tape! Could only have been more of a mess if a big pink flashing insert had popped up saying "Scene Cut""

Ugh!

Yes, that was one of the first VHS tapes I bought when I first had my own place (and had my own TV and VCR!!!!!). I'd only ever seen it previously on the Intervision(?) pre-cert and knew straight away something was amiss. I think that was when I first became highly conscious that they we actually had a censorship board in the UK.

The fact that very few zombies killed people or were shot possibly gave it away.

I saw it on the cinema in the early 80's (doubled with The Brood) and the EIV video was an absolute disgrace. What few shootings were in the cinema version had been badly cut from the video.
