Days indeed when Redemption really opened my eyes to some great films. I remember the battle I'd have trying to decide which title to buy next when I went to Tower (a great store!) - at a good 12.99 if not more I had to collect them slowly...

Their VHS covers stood out on the shelves, even side on. Would always scan the shelves for the red on white spines.

It's funny, while I can remember Vipco and everyone else, I don't recall ever seeing any Redemption tapes in the shops when I was a kid.

We've just published an article by the author of an upcoming book about Straw Dogs - Stevie Simkin - on the Official fanhub:

"Straw Dogs has been freely available on DVD in the UK for about ten years now. In a future blog, I will offer some thoughts on the BBFC’s struggle to maintain its ban on the film from the mid-1980s to the beginning of the new millennium. Today, I will talk a little about the different versions I have encountered over the past twenty-five years or so"

I'm glad they changed the title... I love "Straw Dogs"

They were blood expensive, mind!

My mate and I used to buy import LaserDiscs from the the stores in London (mostly Picadilly Circus) and they were at least s third more expensive than an other shop we found later on.

It's true - they weren't competitive on price but then I can see that's what you were paying for - range and some cool staff. The web was far clunkier in the 90s so a good store like Tower meant you could explore the import mags, discover titles you'd never heard of but certainly it was impossible to imagine owning all the Redemption or Vipco titles - you'd browse and browse and then carefully select one. As for the laser discs - yes gods - that was like some impossible world!
