If it makes you feel any better whenever I attempt to post photos of dvds/blus (never any other subject) to Instagram it always flips photos I've taken prior to going in the app. Very annoying!

Picked White God up as it looks like a more Arty Hungarian take on the nature Amok picture.

A friend was on a holiday in Europe and managed to swing curse of the demon wildside blu for about £15!

monkeypedro 6th September 2015 04:16 PM

I love White God, such brilliant movie. It was one of my favourites shown at this years Glasgow film Festival and such a shame only the dvd is available in the UK so will have to import the US bluray when the price goes down.

There are so many films that happens to, really annoying. The brilliant Late Phases (2014) is one I can think of.

Metrodome are one of the worst. They have a pretty decent catalogue but they release hardly any of their titles on Blu.

You haven't seen The Big Lebowski, Trebor? I'm surprised, but really hope you enjoy it because it's a terrific movie and Jeff Bridges' The Dude is all the all-time great film characters. I don't think it's the Coen brothers' best (that honour goes to Miller's Crossing), but it's perhaps the most consistently funny and quotable of their varied and very distinguished oeuvre.

You have a hell of a lot of catching up to do. Everything they have made is well worth watching; most of them truly great movies. I don't think you need to do it in a chronological order, but starting with Blood Simple wouldn't be a bad idea. They are heavily influenced by film noir, with Blood Simple, The Man Who Wasn't There, Miller's Crossing and even The Big Lebowski easily classifiable as 'neo-noir' films.

Frankenhooker 7th September 2015 11:17 AM

I thoroughly recommend 'O Brother, Where Art Thou ?'

Personally, I think it's the best film they've made thus far. It's just an absolute joy throughout, if ever I'm feeling a bit under the weather, O Brother is guaranteed to cheer me up.

The Coen's have only made a couple of films I'd be reluctant to recommend. Ridiculously consistent.

Some new arrivals from Hong Kong (DDDHouse) and 2 French collectors.
Tiger on Beat on blu (English friendly) and a really cheap (like new) One Armed Swordsman Trilogy French blu boxset (not English friendly though...but if you know what the HK blu box set goes for: US$91.49 + shipping, paid less than 21 Euro all in for the French one).
Luckily Mandarin with French subs is no problem here.

Also picked up the French dvd of weird and wonderful Taiwan flick Magic Curse, unfortunately it's not English friendly (French audio only) but it's the only dvd worldwide...It arrived sealed with a pricetag of 9 Euro but I only paid 0.9 Euro (plus shipping). :thumb:

Must admit that the only Coen Brothers film I truly like is the one they wrote for Sam Raimi - 'Crimewave'

Is that me banned from the forum?

Millers Crossing is superb and long overdue a rewatch. Lebowski is ridiculously entertaining given nothing much happens. I also highly rate Fargo and i think I'm one of the few that likes their remake of Ealings The Ladykillers. O Brother Where Art Thou, on the other hand i hated.

Hey Gold, do you mean the sequel to the re-make of ISOYG - IE the third in the series or do you mean ISOYG 3 Vengeance is Mine as in here;
Revenge Resumes in I Spit On Your Grave 3: Vengeance is Mine - iHorror

:thankingyou:

As far as the Coen's go.

It's Fargo that stands head and shoulders above all else as far as i'm concerned.

Yep, I'd put Lebowski right behind it, then Miller's and Brother, outstanding body of work really.

Had no intention of buying this week, then walked into CEX:dance:... BR was £1, Silverado CE just 50p. Both near mint, BR had booklet, poster and catalog.

Their remake of The Ladykillers is the only one of the Coen brothers' films I don't like and don't own on either DVD or Blu-ray. I couldn't get away with Tom Hanks as the Professor and found jokes about IBS ill fitting in a film of that nature.

They are much better when writing original material (they are extremely clever and talented screenwriters) or, in the case of O Brother, Where Art Thou?, adapting epic poems!

Bought a few blu on my way home tonight:

Run All Night (which I just watched and quite liked)
I survived a Zombie Apocalypse
The Town that dreaded sundown
Maggie

More importantly I just bought my pass for Grimmfest :)

Nordicdusk 7th September 2015 08:49 PM

Thats A Blade In The Dark artwork looks so good the dvd i have has a stupid boarder on it. Looking forward to getting the Blu Ray soon.

MuckyFunster 8th September 2015 01:13 PM

I'm surprised no one has mentioned The Hudsucker Proxy! Top Coen Brothers movie!

Justin101 8th September 2015 02:46 PM

What do you guys think about True Grit? As a latter day Coen film I really enjoyed it. I think I'm in agreement with everyone else that Fargo is #1 and Lebowski isn't far behind. I'm really surprised that no-one has cited Raising Arizona!!

On topic - inspired by the German BD thread I have ordered the USA disc of Night of the Creeps!

I really liked "Maggie."

SShaw 8th September 2015 08:40 PM

Me too. The director did a good job of playing to Arnies strengths and disguising his weaknesses to get a performance of unexpected subtlety.
