I will grab a multi-region BD player at some point - but right now there's still loads of Region B or region-free titles that I want and have yet to pick up that it hasn't really affected me yet.

I'm not 100% but I think my PC's Blu-Ray drive is region free. If not, I'm sure I can make it so. I may have to pick up a Region A locked Blu to test it out... any donations would be much appreciated. ;)

It's a shame the PS3 isn't multi-region, as that would be a pretty formidable package, what with the new 3-D technology too.

I got BU's Living Dead At The Manchester Morgue delivered yesterday, my third North American disk Region FREE of course! :)

Watched the French Highlander disker, not bad at all but i noticed one or two slow down moments. Also the special effects were so much more noticeable (like the showdown in the castle between Brown and Connery, and wires holding Lambert at the end!).

frosty 20th July 2010 09:40 AM

Just watched the remake of the crazies on blu, and zombi 2 on dvd, crazies was good i thought, haven't seen the original, and zombi is just great to watch, love it!

frosty 20th July 2010 09:49 AM

I've just bought hellboy 2 zombieland and 2012, great discs with interesting extras, now i'm waiting on day of the dead on blu, and got my finger hovering over the buy it now on dawn as well, damn the internet and its tempting shiny things

Philleh 20th July 2010 10:16 AM

Recieved my Predator BD disc today (you know, the one that's more representative of the the look of the film when it was shown at the cinema and not the new wax version of the movie) :D ........time to go bask in the grain

I agree Broons, it's a whole lotta fun! Can't wait for the Blu!

Daemonia 21st July 2010 03:57 PM

I recently picked up Brit psychological horror Exam and thought it was absolutely brilliant and it looks superb on Blu-ray. Well worth a look, very smart and intelligent. More Brit films of this calibre, please!

Also grabbed the UK BD of Zombie's Halloween II. Whilst not a masterpiece, I thought it was definitely a step up from the previous film. I just wish Zombie would focus less on trailer trash characters and create something more full-bodied and varied. Not everyone is like the people in his films. I felt that this and the previous film were too much like the Devil's Rejects does Halloween. It's time he spread his wings further and did something new. So, not a bad film overall, but offers up nothing new, really.

And, as you all know, I won the Bubba Ho-Tep Blu-ray and it's a cracker of a disc. I love the film anyway - the dialogue is priceless and Coscarelli pulls the whole thing off flawlessly. The icing on the cake is, of course, seeing it in HD. Now will someone PLEASE give Don some money to make another Phantasm movie - he really needs to answer some crucial questions and Angus Scrimm ain't getting any younger!

@ The Reaper Man: Be prepared to be shocked some more...

Which German Blu-ray edition do you have? Is there a red box on the disc saying "FSK ab 18" ... if so, the first part is missing about 2 minutes of violence. There is also the "ungeprüfte und indizierte" (Unrated) version which is uncut. But giving that the PQ of especially the first one is terrible anyways, that wouldn't save a whole lot.

I just finished a comedy night ...

ZACK AND MIRI MAKE A PORNO has to be one of the funniest, most charming and overall awesome films I've ever seen. Especially the "Star Whores" bit was hilarious, the movie was just fun throughout.

HAROLD AND KUMAR - ESCAPE FROM GUANTANAMO BAY ... well, I haven't seen anything from H&K before but since Kal Penn has been serving duty under Dr. House and now under Barack Obama (what a comparison :D) I wanted to check out his older stuff. And I was pleasantly surprised. The jokes are flat, of course, but the characters are nice and the film's just plain entertaining.

Plus, both Blu-rays (EIV) are really good so I'd recommend both.

Jean Claude puts in an astonshing performance in this one, his acting is first class, which came as a real surprise! Recommended.

yeah i know, wasn't expecting that, pretty good film all in all..

Stephen@Cult Labs 22nd July 2010 08:29 PM

Just ordered a few more BD's. Piranha, Humanoids From The Deep and John Rambo: Extended Edition (yes that's what I called it, since the film on the disc uses this title :woot:). I'm a little annoyed at Lionsgate for not displying the full title on the cover though, but I guess we can't have everything....and the less said about the god-awful artwork the better. They really should have used the fantastic theatrical poster with Rambo standing in the rain holding his knife.

Hello Loops, this is a great film and would make an excellent double bill with "The Frightened Woman" for an evening of pop art smut.

bizarre_eye@Cult Labs 23rd July 2010 07:15 AM

Finally decided to pre-order the Psycho steelbook, plus have Arrow's Inferno and Tenebrae on pre-order too. ;)

Please tell me what you think of the Extended Cut. I'm gonna get it sometime, but if the cut just includes the deleted scenes from the old Blu-ray I can wait until it drops below 10$ ... if it's good however, I'd have to get it now. 8)

Stephen@Cult Labs 23rd July 2010 03:31 PM

From the review I read, it does contain at least one of the deleted scenes (Rambo tending to Sarah's foot after she's rescued). The major changes are...

The film is titled JOHN RAMBO.
There are a few more brutal real images at the beginning newsfeed.
There’s more snake catching and more playing around with the snakes as Johnny bags them up.
There’s more of Julie Benz bugging Rambo to take her group on a boat ride into Burma. In fact, there’s a whole new scene of her begging him. The law of 3!
There’s a longer night scene in a village that’s being raided.
They completely changed the “what is” speech on the boat that takes place in the rain between Julia’s character and Rambo. John talks about politics and war and admits he wasted his life on war. That’s a true statement I guess.
There are longer conversations to be had between the missionaries and Rambo on the boat ride to Burma.
There’s a slight change to the pirate shootout scene.
There’s a longer goodbye scene between John and Sarah when drops them off in Burma.
There are new flashback scenes when Rambo is burning the pirate ship.
The raid on the village where the missionaries are starts out quicker.
There is a new scene where the missionaries are at the prison camp. They talk about the treatment and torture of the prisoners.
After the pastor told Rambo about the missing prisoners, the hammer scene is a bit different. Instead of Rambo’s voiceover where he says, “war is in his blood and all…” you hear a voiceover from the pastor.
There are some slight variances in the rescue of the missionaries..
After the rescue, Rambo now notices that Sarah hurt her foot. He wraps it up for her.
And last but not least, there is a longer goodbye scene between Rambo and Sarah at the conclusion of the brutal warfare resolution of Act III.

And there are smaller differences that the reviewer said he couldn't be bothered writing down!

Playzocker 23rd July 2010 04:34 PM

Thank you so much for this list!

I've also heard that the Extended Cut removed tome of the violence, like when one pirate is being shot or when a shot rips off a guy's feet.

But judging by your list, I'm practically even happy not having seen this version as it sounds like 10 minutes more blah-blah (and let's be honest, acting isn't really Stallones biggest strength :D) and even less violence ... I think I'll stick with my US Blu-ray for now and get this just to complete the RAMBO collection.

I own all Jackie Chan films on vhs, all the so far released Blu-ray's and gradually collecting all the dvd's. Shame I only have my ps3 for blu's then because the police story trilogy would be a must own for any film fan. I watched Police Story just last night and forgot just how phenomenal that film is. Guess I'll just have to wait for some company to buck there ideas up and get some region b blu-ray jackie classics released.

Playzocker 24th July 2010 12:57 PM

The problem is that the BD Assossiation is againt multi-region players which is why the companies who released such players (Dyon, Momitsu) had to do firmware updates to remove that capability. Of course, I'd rather shoot myself than feed my player with that update. One day, I'm getting a REAL codefree machine like Movietyme sells them but they're all so friggin expensive...

Anyone who buys hardware from Movietyme is asking for trouble.
If you look at the T&C's for hardware you will see that MT themselves are only interested in helping out if players go wrong within 30 days.

After that they genuinely expect buyers to contact the US branch of the manufacturer with a view to returning parts to the US at your own expense.

Amazon and Play both operate similar policies regarding faulty hardware but of course if your player is a US player then the UK branch won't be interested so you will end up with a useless piece of junk.

For fully multiregion hardware you should call Multiregion Magic. UK based and apparently the only supplier of players that are multiregional for Bluray.
Other places like Richer Sounds are still only offering Bluray players that are MR for dvd

Waiting for The Crazies remake to turn up in the post. Only other Blu I've bought recently is The Man Who Fell To Earth which I'm still waiting to watch.

Stephen@Cult Labs 24th July 2010 08:23 PM

I've not long finished watching the remake of The Crazies. Quite enjoyed it.

Andra Jai 24th July 2010 09:07 PM

Currently awaiting The Breakfast Club which was sent from playusa earlier in the week.

Will be interesting to see how this looks on Blu-ray

I've just finished watching the extended cut of Rambo 4 which was pretty good.
