He's not a hack though. Black Book, Robocop, Basic Instinct, Total Recall are not the work of a hack.

Listing the afore mentioned Starship Troopers, Point Break, Resident Evil, The Fifth Element etc suggests the majority of our collections are probably guilty pleasures.

Now if you'd said something like Battlefield Earth, the whole world would agree with you.

That's why it fits the bill perfectly.

And get Sharon Stones fanny and Mickey Douglas's saggy arse out in the same film.

I think the problem with this topic on this forum is that we're all pretty open minded and now we're arguing over what is or isn't a guilty pleasure because we all like everything

I'll take back 'hack' and I do LOVE Starship Troopers which is why it's on my list but i'd struggle to tell anyone it's a good film with a straight face

You can tell them with whatever face you like long as you tell 'em! And we're not 'arguing' we're debating. Don't say arguing or you'll have the Asgardian one to deal with.[emoji6]

Not on my list you won't.

Good. Not only is it an excellent sci-fi film it's also a brilliant piece of satire.

When i first saw Starship troopers i thought it was a bit slapdash, with unlikable young characters.
But now i think the erratic direction can be defended to reflect the disorientating nature of young adults being thrust into war.

Also the bland characters embody the stupidity of young adult characters in modern film making, the jock, the pretty girl , the boffin.
And in doing this subverts the usual expectations that they'll win out in the end, when people get blown apart it plays with expectations.
Also even if they win the war the kids have lost their identities by being consumed by the military machine and are purely cogs, so have lost their innocence.

And beside all this it has Michael Ironside, Killer bugs , and plenty of action and bloody mayhem.:shooter:

It may not be subtle, or win any oscars for acting.
But it is definitely not a bad film in any real sense and is really entertaining.:pop2:

Haven't seen it for a while, so i may be completely off track, but that's what i remember thinking last time i saw it.:critter:

It's the acting that lets it down, aside from Ironside the rest of the cast struggle to walk and talk
