I was considering The Evil Dead too. The cabin is old, dark and at least potentially a residence. But i don't think it really fits with the classic image of the creaky old house.

Where is this poster from? It's the first time I have seen the film with that particular title - It's normally 'The House BY The Cemetery'

In chronological order, this is my top 10: The Old Dark House (1932, James Whale) Psycho (1960, Alfred Hitchcock) The Innocents (1961, Jack Clayton) The Haunting (1963, Robert Wise) The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975, Jim Sharman) House (1977, Nobuhiko Obayashi) The changeling (1980, Peter Medak) The House by the Cemetery (1981, Lucio Fulci) The Others (2001, Alejandro Amenábar) Monster House (2006, Gill Kenan) This is a top 10 of films that either did not make the final cut or I didn't think met the criteria: The Cat and the Canary (1927, Paul Leni) House on Haunted Hill (1959, William Castle) The House That Screamed (1969, Narciso Ibáñez Serrador) Suspiria, 1977, Dario Argento) The Shining (1980, Stanley Kubrick) The Evil Dead (1981, Sam Raimi) After Hours (1985, Martin Scorsese) What Lies beneath (2000, Robert Zemeckis) The Silent House (2010, Gustavo Hernández) Innkeepers (2011, Ti West)

I think it was to promote the film prior to release. I could be wrong, just wanted to use a poster a little different to liven things up.

Old Dark Houses The Black Cat (1934) The Haunting (1963) The Night Has Eyes (1942) The Old Dark House (1932) House on Haunted Hill (1959) Psycho (1960) Oliver the Eighth (1934) The Woman in Black (2012) House of Usher (1960) The Bat (1959) A special mention goes to Dark Shadows (2012) and Don't Be Afraid of the Dark (2010) as two modern old dark house films which have really stuck in my head and could well crack this top 10 in a few years time. Also the tv adaptation of Uncle Silas called The Dark Angel (1987) - old dark house brilliance with Peter O' Toole |
