Oh, I'll watch any old shit and find something enjoyable about them. Of course, there's the odd one or two that's just beyond the pale, and even with my low expectations can't satisfy me.

Don't forget, I'm the man who rates The Mighty Gorga as an underrated masterpiece and thinks Ed Wood Jr is a misunderstood genius.

I don't mean films like those. I'm talking about big budget Hollywood banality with nothing to say and made without any of the enthusiasm or innovation of Ed Wood's movies – however bad.

There's something incredibly depressing about the whole 'film by focus group' scenario where you have a director without vision and a script designed to appeal to the lowest common denominator with nothing to challenge the grey cells or which may slightly offend someone somewhere in the world.

the blob 25th April 2012 02:10 AM

Shaft from Warner US on Aug 14th.

Also...

Olive Films will be releasing Jess Franco's Count Dracula sometime in the not too distant future! I've been quite lucky of late. Sold my Dark Sky DVD for a decent amount not long ago. :)

There you go Daemonia and Pete, a Franco debut, even if it is a bit mild-mannered!

the blob 25th April 2012 02:24 AM

Ooooh... New Jack City on Aug 14th as well from Warner. Been hoping that would turn up sometime.

Excellent news. :)

Paul@TheOverlook 25th April 2012 07:22 AM

Add me as another one happy to see New Jack City coming to Blu-ray. :)

Refused 25th April 2012 08:16 AM

Shaft and New Jack City are two of those films I really feel I should have seen by now. Will probably pick both of them up.

bdc 25th April 2012 11:14 AM

I know. Someone over here needs to cut a deal with Sony too. They just licensed 250 films to Mill Creek so surely they must be prepared to license in other territories too.

I want Mysterious Island and Journey To The Centre Of The Earth as well, although Journey is a Fox title.

I asked in the Eureka thread at blu-ray.com when The Big Heat was revealed and I didn't get a no so I'll take that as a positive. It would certainly fit in with some of their recent releases and I'm sure they wouldn't scoff at another Lang film for MOC.

bdc 26th April 2012 07:02 AM

Lots of goodies to come but I personally can't wait for The Blood Beast Terror on bd (just hope it's region free)... :loco:

And eagerly anticipating this getting released over here (seems it's already out in the US) in August or should I just get the US bd (probably region free)... :)

David Cronenberg's "eXistenZ" will be released as a triple feature in the US on May 01, 2012:

eXistenZ / Malevolent / B. Monkey Blu-ray

Comments in the Blu-ray.com forum unfortunately confirm that it doesn't have HD audio, only a DD2.0 track:

Quote:

It's OAR, but the picture quality is mediocre. It looks better than the DVD, but not by much.
Quote:

The eXistenZ transfer isn't going to wow anyone, but I certainly found it to be better than the existing DVD. The audio on the other hand is pretty lackluster (192 Kbps 2 Channel DD).

Daemonia 26th April 2012 09:57 AM

I really don't understand why Miramax have been farming their titles out to Echo Bridge, who haven't really been treating these films with the respect their deserve, often only giving them 1080i makeovers. Miramax/Dimension have some real gems in their library and it's a shame they're being handled by a company that doesn't seem to care about them one iota. They're just banging them out quickly and cheaply to reap maximum profits - and the films suffer as a result.

Paul@TheOverlook 26th April 2012 10:23 AM

I agree. At least the US Lionsgate releases have fared better. Most of the LG and Studiocanal titles released in the UK have been okay too.

bdc 26th April 2012 10:32 AM

Maybe some of LG's bd releases have fared better (they just lost some titles they had out on bd btw) but they don't have a clue what to do with their titles as well it seems.
Just look at their recent dvd release of Blood Diner...which was supposed to be released with some great extras...now it's in a bargain bin Walmart set...with 3 films packed on 1 dvd (dvd-9)...
BLOOD DINER Came Out On DVD?!
