Midnight Sting

James Woods is The Con Man who gets out of Jail and along with Oliver Platt, bets a Town Ruler that his Boxer, played by Louis Gossett JR can beat 10 local Boxers in a day. Fine and fun entertainment.

The Rescuers

One of my favorite Disney Movies in which a pair of Mice set out to rescue a Girl who is being forced to find a priceless Diamond which is located deep in a Cave.

R E S C U E, Rescue Aid Society

Towering Inferno

Paul Newman is The Architect of a large Skyscraper which catches fire and it's up to him and a team of Firemen lead by Steve McQueen to help rescue the occupants. For me, one of the worst things to happen in a Film that's over 150 Minutes is for it to have a slow period and/or it takes a while for The Film to get going as it establishes the main characters and/or plot, thankfully this did not happen, I was thoroughly entertained throughout.

Neo finds out his life is a lie and he and the rest of humanity are every ready batteries for intelligent machines , he is also told by Morpheus that he is the one , the survivor of mankind.

Amazing action and mind bending fights , with a great cast of characters have us a very unique and enjoyable movie. 10/10

Continuing where the first ended, Neo and co and continuing there quest to save mankind. While not as good as the first and they story is a bit uninspired and all over the place it's still enjoyable with some great action scenes. 7.5/10

A young woman goes to hospital to have tumour checked , said tumour is the spirit of a 400 year old Indian medicine man.

Totally bonkers one minute it's deadly serious and the next it's jumping into carry on territory, mind this seems to be largely Tony Curtis fault as one minute he thinks he's in a horror and the next a comedy . We have some great effects and kills and a psychedelic battle. As I said it's bonkers but enjoyable . 7/10

The Shuttered Room (1967)

Based on a story by August Derleth and HP Lovecraft, The Shuttered Room tells of Carol Lynley who returns to her New England (It really is new England as it was shot in Norfolk) island childhood home after twenty years with new hubby Gig Young in tow. The old mill house she returns to proves just as creepy and Oliver Reed and his thugs create unwanted tensions.

Similar to both Hammer's The Damned in the way Reed and his cohorts run round terrorizing everyone and also The Beast in the Cellar (1971) although this clearly was made first. It's a pity director David Greene allows the secret of the room at the top of the stairs to be revealed so early on but there's still a sense of tension and malevolent evil throughout even though you kinda' know what's coming.

Read the books , but been years since I last read them might really read them again. Think Curtis was totally miscast in the role.

Japanuary #1 #2

I'm only watching Japanese films in January (or at least a Japanese film a day in case I fancy an English language film at some point) and it will therefore be known as Japanuary!

Kiki's Delivery Service (1989)

https://www.theedgesusu.co.uk/wp-con.../07/Kiki-1.jpg

A gentle start to the year with one of my favourite Ghibli films. A tale of a 13 year old witch who has to leave home to learn how to be part of society, things get off to rocky start but eventually all ends well :D

Burst City (1982)

https://eofftvreview.files.wordpress...-2-1.jpg?w=640

I'm sad to admit that I was pretty disappointed by this one, I really wanted to like it. It's an experimental punk 'musical'-ish set in a post apocalyptic Japan and as far as the story goes there are 2 rival punk gangs, and erm a pack of street bums Vs an organised crime syndicate, I think... It didn't really make sense... There were some great set pieces though, probably around 30 minutes of good footage among the 115 min running time. I'm happy I streamed it on Amazon rather than pay £20 for the disc on a blind buy!

Do you speak Japanese, or are you relying on the sub-titles?

New Scott Adkins flick. A mixture of Tron, Jumaji and Gamer. Haven't laughed as much in ages, mainly due to Adkins' character, which is a parody of whom he usually plays (think of a certain space jerk from Futurama etc :xmaslol:). Woke AF, but that just made me laugh even more tbh.
Enjoyed this more than Seized, which was very generic tbh.

Lol! I quite like Adkins, a good dtv star who I hope will cross over with a big hit one day. Just curious, as I don't watch many modern films any more, what sort of stuff are they putting in to make it "woke", lol! I see it all the time in my son's books from school, there's someone from every corner of the world just for the sake of it.

Currently watching Night of the Demon (indicator release), solid M R James adaptation that has terrific pace, atmosphere and acting and remains very creepy!

I don't speak Japanese, I wish I could... I tried to learn but I can't get my head around the written language which is built around 3 'alphabets'. I can distinguish the 3 but I can't remember what they mean...

I might try again in 2021. I think it would be a skill that I'd get a lot out of.

The Erotic Rites of Frankenstein (1972)

One of director Jess Franco's less salacious affairs in which much of the gratuitous sex makes way for his fondness for classic horror...

...Well classic horror if you think Frankenstein's monster is simply a dude painted silver.

Not to knock the film though as it is really quite good with some fabulous ideas and creations. Such as Anne Libert's blind bird vampire woman who is totally naked aside from a cape and some green feathers, she does the bidding of Howard Vernon's sorcerer.

There's also a delightful dungeon where rituals play out watched from behind bars by cloaked skeletal figures - a beautiful creepy Gothic touch. There's also the nude couple tied back to back and whipped by the monster over a spiked floor - classic stuff. In fact so classic Franco practically redid the scene for Countess Perverse a couple of years later.

Although the film isn't particularly coherent it really doesn't matter as it plays out like a lurid, vividly coloured fever dream in an almost seventies comic book style and is wonderfully watchable.

This review was written under the heady influence of Ghost's Infestissumam album.

For a change I watched .... a superhero movie ....

Sadly it was WW84 :xmaslol:

From very early on I found myself shouting "WHAT????" at the screen. The only thing that I took from it is that cocaine must still be really popular in Hypocritewood. Ending about as mawkish as you can get without it being a Hallmark flick tee hee. I actually quite liked the first one, but this is just terrible, and terribly racist at one point, thought that was verboten now?
Like this movie, they just seem to make shit up as they go along ..... and why do they all have to be so bloody long?
It never took me 150 minutes to read a comic back in the day cough. Some of the scenery at the start was pretty. So there was that at least.

All these years later it's still a huge disappointment and let down. Let's spend most of the movie with the most boring characters and throw away what made the other two good. Really feels like they ran out of ideas and didn't have a real ending. 5/10

I don't think Akira will happen, it's been greenlit and in pre-production for around 20 years, DiCaprio was down to play Kaneda (maybe Tetsuo???) if I recall correctly. I think that Spielberg turned the job down too.

My dear killer

My Dear Killer...
Quite a grim piece of Giallo meets Poliziotteschi,as a suave Police Inspector Peretti (George Hilton) tries to solve a particularly head scratching case of kidnap and murder...Not helped by the fact that there is s multitude of suspects and a ever growing list of victims to boot...I might be being a bit thick here, but the motive and the overall villain of the crime did sort of elude me here, there were more red herrings than a fish market....But then again no one ever said that this genre ever had to make sense,I mean they very seldom do...At one point I even thought that Hilton was the suspect,(which is ridiculous in hindsight, but there you go)...But putting my confusion aside I was genuinely hooked by this tale, even if I did loose track of who was who,and how they were involved...Not as gory as you might be expecting, but does have a couple of unpleasant scenes, and certainly does not have the high bloody body count of say Tenebrae or Bavas Bay of Blood...But then again not many films have decapitation by a digger, which at the start is believed to be an accident ,not really sure how you accidentally decape some with a bloody great JCB,but there you are that's Giallo...

Hide and Go Shriek (1988)

One of the poorest paced slashers i've seen in a long time. Absolutely nothing of interest happens in the first half as some unruly high school numpties decide to spend the night in a furniture store, play hide and seek, shag and eventually get murdered by a mystery killer who may just be the cross dressing night watchman.

Things do improve during the second half and the action becomes frenetic at times plus there was the interesting idea that the killer dressed in the clothes of his victims after each murder, man or woman. The abundance of mannequins on display added a bit of creepy atmosphere too as well as one or two memorable killings - service elevator i'm thinking of you here.

Not a top drawer slasher by any means but certainly watchable even if the first half is a bit of a slog.

10 To Midnight, 1983.

A young psychopathic killer is on the loose, a detective and his partner try to track him down and bring him to justice by any means, when the killer is set free the detective goes further to get the killer.

Charles Bronson teams up with J. Lee Thompson and The Cannon Group for this decent thriller of cat and mouse game and a cop that will protect his daughter who may be a target. Cannon were known for doing things on the cheap but the production values for this seem to be decent either Thompson or Bronson may have helped them or the production had high hopes. There is plenty of Tense moments built up that worked well, and some nice female nudity.

The Spiritualist. 2018.

Laura suffering night terrors and sleep paralysis believes her deceased mother is haunting her and reaches out to a medium who holds a seance with Laura's friends, what starts as a night of resolution becomes a night of terror.

How I made it all the way through this film is a miracle, it had Julie T. Wallace and Ian Reddington in it so good plot and decent actors in it for a start but after 20 mins I could tell this was gonna be bad but kept saying it will get better, did it heck, the film did try to add in a twist the dramatically failed and made the film laughable, for background noise it may be suitable just for that.

Replicant. 2001.

A killer known as The Torch, is being hunted by police, scientists under the supervision of NSA decide to clone him and use it as a guide to where he be and who his next target is.

I really enjoyed this movie! The plot was very cool and it kept you thinking and wondering what would happen next. Also Van Damme really acts in this movie!!! Unlike his other movies where he just kicks and punches to the plot he actually does some good acting. I really felt for the Replicant having to learn basic steps over again and learning what life is like outside.

Michael Rooker plays a good part as the detective who spent 3 years trying to capture the killer only to announce his retirement and gets coerced to take on the clone as a partner and having to come up with excuses when the clone messes up like calling him "Special" and having to build up trust.

Asking For It

I would have to say this is what they used to call quirky tbh. An online journalist is hounded by a stalker. Comedy. Lots of barbed dialogue regarding the current state of play in this modern world. Did seem a tad pat towards the end for all that.

I Drink Your Blood. 1970.

A bunch of satanic hippies arrive in a small town and cause problems for a small boy when they victimise his grandfather and sister, so he takes revenge on them with disastrous results.

I watched this last year during the first lockdown and even though it's daft...i actually enjoyed it so i thought i'd dig it out again, the acting isn't that great, the gore effects are basically low budget, and stupid, if anyone is infected with rabies take a hint from this film...water from a hose can slow them down. The film is one of those that it's so bad it's so good.

Flavia The Heretic. 1974.

In Italy 1400, a young girl is forced into a monastery for nuns by her father, as she grows up, she begins to resent it. When pilgrims invade she decides to leave and join a Muslim army goes after those who wronged her.

This film combines nunexploitation and some serious drama from the Italians, Florinda Bolkan takes the lead role of the adult Flavia who escapes the nuns, captured and brought back to be punished and seeks revenge. There is one or two more graphic scenes that can make a man cringe yet director Gianfranco Mingozzi managed to make it appear so realistic and so disturbing. Even though the pace can be slow and the battles can be seen as amateurish this is one film I do enjoy going back to every so often.

Baba Yaga. 1973. (Extended Edition).

A young Photographer falls under a spell from a witch known as Baba Yaga.

This new version is quite interesting as it shows more interaction between the characters, even though Shameless put the destroyed pieces together and did try to fix them you can tell they are the old print with the changes to the picture and the subtitles. The picture quality is better than other releases, downside is the sound at the start i kept having to turn the volume up and down but the problem does correct itself. At 42 years old, Carroll Baker wasn't shy about getting her kit off and showing her body...MILF, IMO one of the best releases of this film.

Aka Private House for the S.S. is an ever so slightly sleazy affair from the usually reliable Bruno Mattei.

The sex, nudity and general exploitation elements are very blink and you'll miss em.

Not really.

This is full on Nazisploitation. Girls are trained by Nazi scientists to sexually satisfy high ranking Nazi's in a bid to route out traitors in the SS. Imagine the Jennifer Lawrence movie Red Sparrow but with the actual balls to show girls trained in exploitation f*cking in all it's depraved ways. Even with a German Shepherd (And i don't mean a bloke who looks after sheep).

Much kinky debauchery ensues. Only the dissolutely immoral need apply.
