ZOOM IN: SEX APARTMENTS - Pretty sleazy Pinky Violence which sets dream-like imagery against a lopsided pace. Fans of eg. 'Assault - Jack The Ripper' will probably be into it - it's cut from the same perverse cloth, but feels more bizarre than most hard Nikkatsu entries, wrapping numerous close-to-the-bone scenes of vaginal-blow torch action around arbitrary Giallo stylings and random bursts of surrealism. Although the black gloved rapist-murderer secretes a couple of sadism gimmicks up the sleeve of his sinister raincoat - not only does he like to burn the genitals of his victims, he also threatens them with piano tuning equipment (!) - this is no Giallo, and the references feel out of context... though no doubt the Giallo's status as the most chic excuse for cinematic sexual violence at the time can't have been far from the producer's minds. Whatever, I don't like Gialli anyway, and, despite its awkward dynamics, this vaguely bonkers bit of morbid porn will appeal to those in search of Japanese madness in particular and questionable cinema in general.
CHRISTMAS EVIL - What a great film! I can't believe it took me so long to finally get round to watching it! It has exactly the vibe I always look for in early eighties weirdo cinema, but so seldom find - a kind of skewed cross between post-film school amateur art house and wonky exploitation. This really worked for me - when I was watching it, I could readily buy into the notion that it was the best thing I'd seen in my whole life! It probably isn't / wasn't, but I continue to feel enlivened and enthralled by this grotty exploration of the world of a toy-fixated creepo who obsesses over Xmas and, rather disturbingly, its natural constituency (ie neighbourhood kids). The film meanders here and there and makes a few false moves, but it definitely feels unique, and never comes across as a mere genre (as in generic) flick whilst defiantly brandishing its scarlet dripping reindeer antlers in the name of Horror. A must see!

CHOKE CANYON (ON DANGEROUS GROUND) - A hugely enjoyable action movie with a nice sense of humour and some incredible aerial stunt work.

I always think it the best made of the series. It has the tightest storyline, the RV crash is a pretty good stunt and a great soundtrack.

I think its my second favourite in the series.

Part 2 being the best imo.

Great lineup bizarre_eye! What did you think of Take Shelter? I thought Michael Shannon gave a harrowing performance.

I haven't seen it in a while but if I remember, it changes to English when they are in South Africa, first with the Butcher when they're buying meat then later on with the S.A. Cops etc...
It is a bit strange why these few lines aren't dubbed over and not sure why they're not but never the less, still one of the most crazy, sickening, and yet highly entertaining films ever. :)
