Deviation.

One night with an off duty nurse whose just been kidnapped by a greasy and sinister nutcase just esscaped from broadmoor, played by DANNY DYER

Surprisingly good, each time the nurse tries to escape dannys nutter ends up killing another person and pretty soon theres a trail of bodies across london. Certainly worth a punt!

I keep picking this up in Morrison's where it's going for a fiver but always put it back again. It's the retro schizophrenic on the loose plot that appeals to me. Is it worth a fiver?

Thats about the right price, wait a bit and it'll end up cheaper I suspect. It's well shot, well paced and dyer isnt in his usual irritating mode and actually seems to be making an effort to play a nutcase.

It wont make any top 10 lists but I can think of far worse things to spend a fiver on.

Demoncrat 9th April 2012 11:30 AM

To celebrate finally finishing my Cthulhu game in hard mode (thats IT! put it away....) i watched
The Devil Doll (Tod Browning, 1936)
I can only concur with the recentish review on here, amazing sets, a fairly fast paced story, and Lionel Barrymore!! This may be a contender for my Boxing Day shenanigans...though i have my heart set on THC2 and The Little Mermaid ( actually, im not kidding it's more of an evil cackle...;))
Recommended!!

God Bless America (Bobcat Goldthwait, 2011)
I liked the trailer so much etc.....it's not often you see your own world view in an american movie (the last one was Henry:laugh:) A great central performance from Joel Murray as Frank, who to say the least gets dumped on from a great height and finally takes matters into his own hands....
and due to current events, i can't see this getting any publicity any time soon, a pox on the media i say.....
I Recommend This Film Wholeheartedly.

http://i42.tinypic.com/talcic.jpg 1)Anna Boleyn,Ich möchte kein Mann sein,Die Austernprinzessin,Die Bergkatze and Sumurun are from Eureka's Lubitsch In Berlin boxset, which covers Ernst Lubitsch's early work,2)Tales of the Black Freighter and Under the Hood are companions to Watchmen and more accurate to the comic than the movie, which I hated,3)Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid was fun,the chemistry between Newman and Redford was great,4)Time was another beautiful film by Kim ki Duk,not one of his best, but still good,5)Trauma,I found it disappointing, one of Argento's weakest film,on the other hand ,Opera(which was the very first Argento film I watched 20+ years ago )is probably on the top5 list.Door Into Darkness was good, especially episode 2 and 3, 6)Bare Behind Bars was below average, too much nudity and nothing else really! 7)Bronx Warriors was very good and 8)L'illusionniste was great and very moving!

Crimson Blade 9th April 2012 04:55 PM

Watched two classic post-apocalypic action films today on the AWE label, 2019-After The Fall of New York and The New Barbarians.
And despite being a bit cheap looking, i found both of them highly entertaining, esp the great 80's soundtracks. Top stuff. :)

'Salem's Lot (2004)
Watched the original yesterday thought id give the remake another spin and the brilliant Electra Glide in Blue

Gojirosan 9th April 2012 05:52 PM

Appropriate Adult - a decent TV film concerning the Fred and Rosemary West case. It is a masterclass of acting more than anything, with Dominic West and Emily Watson quite amazing in their rôles. Monica Dolan is utterly terrifying as Rose West!

It is good viewing, but starts to lose its way towards the end, I feel, getting a bit dramatically saggy and over-long. Overall though, a superb bit of crime drama without ever reaching the heights of The Red Riding Trilogy.

What do you think of the remake Vic?

I didn't dislike it at all, not a patch on the original mind you.

Great selection – were they from Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk?

Speaking of which got home last night and decided to watch a film from my 'to watch' mountain. Settled on THE BLACKOUT.

Attachment 52708

I've been somewhat put off the movie by a host of bad reviews on amazon. But I picked it up for a quid in manchester in a second hand shop still shrink wrapped and thought what the hell.

Ok, firstly some of the FX is definately ropey, the movies made on the cheap and the earthquake stuff is clearly an optical effect. The monsters are interestingly designed but look very cg in places, like the really bad lickers in the first resident evil movie. Also one or two of the performances are fairly naff.

That aside, its actually a fun little movie. Its got a decent SCORE (note not a bunch of randomly selcted tunes but an actual score, not john williams or anything but still) Once its started it never lets up the pace, its pretty gorey but not torture porn levels and its a film thats not affraid to kill likeable characters so from the get go you realise noones safe. For a low budget digital movie this one actually delivers the goods and is definately worth seeking out (currently 80p on amazon!)

Ranarchy 10th April 2012 07:57 AM

American Psycho
Women's Prison Massacre
Rocktober Blood
Killer Workout

.....and for some reason I've been watching my She-Ra dvds a lot.....

Rik 10th April 2012 09:28 AM

Watched Wilderness last night, great British survival horror film similar to Dog Soldiers just without the werewolves and featuring the always excellent Sean Pertwee, Toby Kebbell(Dead Man's Shoes) and a very lovely looking Alex Reid. Highly recommended

Watched
The Magic Christian last night. along with Candy this is 60s mainstream cinema at it's looniest, though neither reach the heights of 2001 imo. If you're a beatless or Sellers fan, or if, like me, you enjoy seeing familiar british actors doing odd things then i recommend this one. If not, go and watch Love Thy Neighbour.

Nightmare Concert AAAh, it's that time again, since my mate in Glesca STILL has my Touch Of Death (3 and a half years and counting!!!:mmph::mmph::censored:) dug this out, the lovely print belies the sheer unpleasantness of this rather pomo, cough cough, take on Sullivan's Travels for gore fans IMO.

Baseball Fury 10th April 2012 12:33 PM

I've watched a very mixed bunch this past week or so, namely Shaolin Soccer, Romeo Must Die, The Empire Strikes Back, The Taking of Pelham 1-2-3 (remake), TMNT (CG), The Lion King and Inland Empire.

Strange week.

JENIFER and THE CARD PLAYER
i prefer PELTS to JENIFER in the Masters of Horror series, but its still a good film....sexually obsessed with a freak!
as regards to TCP well as its been said before not one of his best, more of a thriller with off screen violence which Argento intended
but my girlfriend liked the film, more so than JENIFER

Although I'm pretty much spent up for the month, that does sound like something worth a blind buy. However, Lovefilm send me a card offering three months for the price of one, which may help to curb my spending!

The Card Player is a mediocre Horror Thriller, but the last twenty minutes totally ruin the whole film. :fear:
I'd say this is easily Argento's worst film, together with Phantom of the Opera.

Greetings!

Paul@TheOverlook 10th April 2012 02:51 PM

I think Card Player is way better than Phantom (and Mother of Tears too).

Gojirosan 10th April 2012 03:02 PM

I really liked The Card Player. Not sure what it is about it to which people object.

Mother Of Tears is better though. :tongue1:

I think TRAUMA is one his lesser films w/ CARD PLAYER and GIALLO

MOTHER OF TEARS is an underrated horror from Argento imo
ok some mad scenes, but he directed a nice and gory horror film which would of been banned/censored some years ago

Wilderness is a superb film Nos.

Brutal and realistic yet fun with it.

I always rank it with Severance, but apart from it being set outdoors and people die they are not really that simillar.

Handyman Joe 10th April 2012 03:14 PM

In the spirit of Easter (it is the celebration of the resurrected dead after all!) I put on Burial Ground - The Nights of Terror on Saturday night. Mixed company = Big mistake. For some reason the sight of a boggle eyed man-child sucking on his 'mamas' boobie while ridiculous zombies battered the door down, didn't go down well in the room. In fact, my wife ordered the film to be turned off. I don't know, some people. Must say though, despite its ineptitude, there's a relentlessness, a single mindedness, about this film that (accidently I think) does capture the actual feeling of a nightmare. The blu ray picture is pretty good considering it wasn't exactly lensed by Freddie Francis or Jack Cardiff.

I don't think any Argento film comes close to the awfulness of Phantom of The Opera :D

It's hardly a classic like Fulci's
Zombie masterpiece, but it does have a certain charm tbh, esp the creepy atmosphere and music score. Oh, and not forgetting the rather strange Peter Bark. :D

bizarre_eye@Cult Labs 10th April 2012 04:47 PM

I actually prefer Burial Ground to Zombie Flesh Eaters.

Whilst Zombie flesh Eaters works very well as a moody, hopeless struggle for survival (with some excellent FX work), Burial Ground, whilst less excellent FX-wise still carries that hopeless message but mingles it with some sleaze and some truly WTF?! moments to create a enormously fun film. Whilst it may not be technically as 'good', it's a film I have a real soft spot for and love to watch again and again.

I'm going to have to stick up for MoT here! Whilst it is easily the worst of the three mothers trilogy, I think it's still an enjoyable film, especially if you take it as a stand-alone work and not compare it to Suspiria or Inferno.

Phantom isn't too bad (aside from some of the acting ;)), either.

Much prefer the above two Argento's to The Card Player and Giallo.
