Coincidentally enough I just watched Demons 2 for the very first time. Excellent job by Arrow on the transfer and extras, really enjoyable and silly film with a better soundtrack than the first.

I seem to be one of the few who prefer the sequel to the original, just more fun over all.

I had the German DVD of this but never watched it because it had no English options. :ohwell:

It's amazing what you get in Poundland these days - I picked up a copy of a charming Thai movie today called Meat Grinder. To think of the foo-fer-a over The Burning all those years ago and now you get this, sitting next to a vintage trains dvd, for a quid! It is indeed gory but pretty hard going. The director thinks he's Wong Kar-Wai so there's endless changes of film stock, rapid editing, inappropriate lush music etc etc. Spurious 'social comment' a'la Dream Home is provided by a pointless bit about the Bangkok riots. There are interminable flashbacks to explain why the heroine became nutty - I fast forwarded through these. All in all, in the burgeoning 'strange ingredients in Asian food' sub-genre this is pretty near the bottom. Definitely worth £1 though if you're a fan of bodies being sliced up every which way.

I got it a few weeks back from my local Poundland, it is indeed a good film and like you say an absolute bargain for a quid

Went to see Dredd tonight. Really enjoyable film and an excellent performance by Carl Urban. Great visuals and action too, let down by the bloody murky useless 3D. It worked to a degree in the slo-mo sequences but the film would have benefitted without it overall and I can't wait to see it on bluray in non 3D. Due to the nature of Dredds character it could be hard to do a film of him well (he's not that engaging a character and he can't really grow or develop through the events in the film) but this dealt with all that really well.

Purleez - give me a break!

At least the remake holds no pretenses, and didn't sell out!

*Note - I am a fan of the early 'bad-taste' Waters films, but the original version of 'Hairspray' left me cold

not a great fan of Waters but i thought A DIRTY SHAME was quite funny

as regards to the remake of HAIRSPRAY, i haven't seen it but Travolta in drag....judging by his pic of kissing that guy off the plane he was dying for the part!;)

Watched V/H/S with my dad and brother last night. Fantastic movie, really REALLY freaky too.
It has a bit of a slow start, with the first tape being really slow, and really average.
The 2nd tape, the Ti West one, was very slow, and very mysterious and nothing was explained, but I quite liked it, unlike my dad and brother.
The 3rd one, was the best as agreed by everyone, being a fantastic little slasher, with a great and terrifying killer.
The 4th tape was a bit paranormal activity, but was probably the scariest out if the lot, having all agreed to stop the movie for a brake when the little glowing kid ran through the door. Quite good with a interesting twist.
The 5th tape was amazing. I'd give this an equal first with the 3rd one, with a fantastic story, set up and amazing end. I'm also giving kudos to Radio Silence for putting fantastic cgi effects into footage of that quality, making pass off as almost real. Hope Radio Silence do other movies.
The bits in between, like the first couple, gets off to a slow start, but little creepy things like dead bodies in the background disappearing, and people watching the tapes disappearing, made it all very good and mysterious.

On the whole, fantastic film, highly reccomended.

Also watched Cabin In The Woods the night before with everyone, this being the 2nd time for me. Still amazing.

I was in a Rollin mood last night (happens about 6 times a year) and watched the Redemption blu ray of The Iron Rose. What was that scene with the clown wandering through the graveyard all about? In its sheer balls out ludicrousness that one sequence sums up the addictive appeal of JR. The man is unspoofable!

Finished watching this last night, another fun Shaw wuxia fantasy.
Certainly one of the better ones as far as story is concerned.

Picked up a film called CREEP VAN for a quid in a charity shop.

It's set in detroit and its about a bloke whose had a string of bad luck and has ended up working in a car wash. What he really wants is his own ride as he's sick of taking the bus, he see's a van for sale and phones the owner trying to buy it. What he does'nt know but we do is the vans owner is a nutter who has modified the van into a mobile killing machine and spends his days driving about killing people!

This is a fun movie with plenty of prosthetic effects work and gory deaths. Its very low budget with some iffy acting but at 80 minutes long with plenty of murders it passes the time well enough, surprisingly good.

If only the clown scene had you thinking what was that all about?
you did better than me!

(Don't get me wrong though, I loved it when I watched it the other night.)

The guy in the joke shop Dracula cloak was also somewhat peripheral to the plot I felt. Man he kept us waiting for the obligitary boobs scene, did he not - 65 minutes by my impatient watch. They were worth the wait, I can confirm.

Just finished watching Urban Explorer (2011)...ok-ish for a newer film I guess...maybe they could make a sequel with a special police squad going in (and add more action)... ;)

Watched Weekend Murders earlier today. Curious little film, was expecting more of a giallo than I got. Seemed very tongue in cheek at times (I particularly loved the local policeman veering from bumbling buffoon to perceptive detective at the drop of a hat). It did seem to drag in places and could have been a lot tighter too.

The girl dancing around the graves was good and all...but it could have been so much better. :eyebrows:

I saw the film for the first time when I watched the Code Red DVD a few months ago and I enjoyed it. I read somewhere that it was a giallo but it is a actually a whodunnit.

Yeah, it was the Code Red disc I watched too. They did a great job of it. It definitely is more of a whodunit than a giallo though. The peculiar Englishness of it is really entertaining too.

Watched the third installment of Nucleus' Grindhouse trailer series, and easily the dullest of the bunch. Even hardened trash fans would have their work cut out for them with this selection. Aside from a few classics (Cannibal Apocalypse, Lizard in a Woman's Skin, Candy Snatchers, Lorna the Exorcist), most of the selections are mind-bendingly awful, which suggests the 70's was not just a different decade but a different planet. Some of the trailers are so downright weird, you wonder what the trailer-cutters were smokin' when they put 'em together...

I'd seen it before, but couldn't quite remember what it was about! It is one of those very surreal dream like films though. It's almost as if you're absorbed into the dream and after it ends and you wake, you don't really recall much about it! I'd definitely recommend it, surreal but very beautiful, with some fantastic cinematography.

SHIVER OF THE VAMPIRES.

2nd redemption disc down!

Liked it better than NUDE VAMPIRE thanks to the great soundtrack.

Great location and as per usual with these films some great looking ladies!

Another amazing transfer as well!

Continuing my adventures in the mainstream world of ghosts and demons I watched PARANORMAL ACTIVITY today. Basically a woman and a man are terrorised by a bedroom door which opens and closes itself for 80 minutes.

I really liked this for it's post BLAIR WITCH minimalism: one video camera and an irritating as f*ck couple. It's a really, really slow burn of a film and could be seen as boring but I enjoyed the couple bickering for hours before the final jump fright ending which scared the living shit out of me.

Kind of, 2 is set just before 1 and gives you some idea of the reasons for the events of that film and 3 is set when Katie and her sister are kids. Part 4 is due out soon, which I believe is a webcast type setting i.e run out of ideas

Well Monday was all hospital and doctors, yesterday was just blah and this morning/afternoon was spent baking but have finally just watched The Damned (1963) and am now watching The Shame of Patty Smith (1962), I need to pick up the pace as my holiday will be over before I know it!

PaulD 3rd October 2012 11:06 PM

Maniac Cop - always enjoyable

When a Stranger Calls (1979) - haven't seen this in years and still really enjoyed it. It does drag slightly after the first tense 15 minutes but it's forgivable since it does interesting shifts in perspective from the killer to the P.I and back to the babysitter again which i find quite novel for a film like this. A damn sight better than the lacklustre remake which basically just stretches the original's first 15 minutes to tedious breaking point.

pedromonkey 3rd October 2012 11:52 PM

Last few films watched...

DAWN OF THE DEAD (Directors Cut) (1979)
No matter how many times i watch it, i always get enjoyment out of it. It's one of those films that maintains it's awesomeness and re-watch-ability.

ARMY OF DARKNESS
Rewatched this fun as **** horror comedy, the third in the Evil dead trilogy and even though it's not even on the same level of ED1 or ED2, this is still top entertainment with some great KNB creatures and a great Bruce Campbell performance

PIRATES IN AN ADVENTURE WITH SCIENTISTS
really good animation and some funny moments but not enough to make this special. Needed more laughs and is not on the same level as Wallace and Gromit.

COOGAN'S BLUFF
Really good action comedy from Don Siegel and Clint Eastwood with a great motor bike chase and bar room punch up, not as gritty as Dirty Harry but a whole lot of fun.

SCORPIO
Gritty, well made espionage thriller with Burt Lancaster and Alain Delon. Definitely a solid film in this genre. Say what you want about Michael Winner but he made some awesome films in the 70s.

PENTATHLON
not the best Dolph Lundgren film ever made, an uneasy mix of inspirational sports drama and DTV action film however David Soul is great as the evil nazi villain. Anchor Bay's blu looks pretty good though

BLUE STEEL
very good police/stalker/psycho thriller from Katharine Bigalow, with a great central performances form Jamie Lee Curtis and a sinister twisted performance from the late Ron Silver.

WE ARE THE NIGHT
Pretty good German vamp film that unfortunately doesn't live up to it's potential. Could have been better but still a lot of fun. Sexy ladies and gore.

SHAUN OF THE DEAD
just as funny on the 12th time as it was the first time. I know somerpeople really dislike Simon Pegg but this and Hot Fuzz are both brilliant movies...

RESIDENT EVIL: RETRIBUTION
While some well known characters from the game are well underused, this 5th instalment in the Resident Evil franchise is a hell of a lot of fun, it's a marked improvement over Afterlife and i'm eager to see where the franchise is going next. I'll keep watching them if Anderson keeps making them..

PROMETHEUS
While it is a beautifully crafted film with some fantastic nods to the Alien Series and an ending that would in a way tie in to the evolution of the Xenomorph, Prometheus seemed to be missing something in the middle of the film, possibly 15-20 minutes of more back story on The Engineers and more on why we were created by them, it really seemed to be just a very long trailer for the eventual sequel. This what happens when you allow Damon Lindloff to write a screenplay, all questions and no answers, it's like LOST all over again. However, it is still a terrific science fiction film but one that could have had something a little extra.
