Oasis of boredom more like :tongue1: Seemed to take forever for anything to happen, and only decided it wanted to be a thriller in the final 30 minutes or so. Reckon this one'll end up on ebay.

A second opinion.

Oasis of Fear is excellent, sure its not a giallo as such, its an exploitation film with hippies and almost dreamlike kinkiness, it is fairly slow moving but in this instance it helps develop both character and storyline in a languid style.

Its got a cast to kill for in Lovelock, Muti and Papas, a wonderfully trippy pop score and is basically an undiscovered gem from Umberto Lenzi. As far away from his seminal Cannibal Ferox as you can get.

Agreed. My second favourate Lenzi (That I have seen so far) after Almost Human. Can't beat Millian.

I also agree with what you say about time dulling the edge of 'Reanimator's OTT blood & guts black comedy. I guess that's the price of progress! Having said this, I've never had the same problem with 'Evil Dead' - it has a kind of vicious hysteria about it that goes beyond comedy.

me neither, I just know others who have.

Equally there's stuff in re-animator I still find funny, mainly the 'head giving head' as its the one part of the film that still feels transgressive and the morgue security guard constantly going off for a hand shandy right before trouble starts.

Contamination and Zombie Holocaust. Both films trading off the success of bigger and better films but both highly enjoyable in their own right.

gnaw,last night.
enjoyable,but a bit slow.
o.k for a £1!

Mrs MTDS has just finished this box set. Since she's in a plaster cast at the moment due to drunken tomfoolery, I'm trying to get her to watch Cronenberg's "Crash" but no joy so far.

I can still remember what the guy in Blockbusters said to me when I rented this back when it came out-"Crash eh, you must be one sick ****er if you want to watch this!", I replied with "I am" and walked out grinning to myself

Such a shame the story didn't end with you being run over.:tongue1:

Watched Prison by Renny Harlin over the weekend. To be honest,it wasn't great. Had some well established names attached to it,like Mac Ahlberg and Irwin Yablans and Charles Band. But alas I came away disappointed.

That's a great line-up. I love Malpertuis, very reminiscent of Lisa and the Devil in its arty weirdness. There's a great commentary by the director, Harry 'Daughters of Darkness' Kumel, on the Barrel edition where he goes into detail about working with Orson Welles on this movie. He's not complimentary, to say the least!

This film is creepy from the moment it starts until the end. It really pulls you right into the story and caring about the characters. A film that really keeps you on your toes and makes you think to get the true story of what your seeing.

I'm not sure b, it's just a stock poster used for the film on Letterboxd. Maybe it's a promo that never made it to an official release, or a fan design?

bdc 21st October 2012 08:49 PM

Could be one of those as I also found it a French site but the dvd never seems to be released.
Would have been a nice addition to their giallo collection... ;)

It would of done! This film desperately needs a decent DVD release...

It seems many aren't as familliar with the second Hellraiser film as i would have thought.

keirarts 21st October 2012 09:46 PM

Santa's Slay.

Bill Goldberg is santa, out on a rampage after being forced to be nice for the last 1000 years.

Very disjointed, poorly made and very short but an awful lot of idiotic fun for 75p from a local 2nd hand shop... no Silent night deadly night but I still enjoyed it!

The Room

A ten minute short Co-directed by Rutger Hauer. Shot in black and white its a story of a mans fascination with a room he walks past every day and years later returns unknown to himself to rent the room. Rutger Hauer Plays Harry as the older man living in the room and while he speaks it shows him as a young man. Nicely shot and some very nice music played over Hauers soothing voice.

THE FRIGHTENERS - I don't go for mainstream comedy horror much, but it's not like I watch 'Tumbling Doll of Flesh' EVERY night. I actually really liked this, although when Michael J Fox's 'ghost buddies' turned up I thought I was going to hate it. I'm not really a Peter Jackson fan, and although 'Heavenly Creatures' is great, just about everything else he's put his hand to barring this has irritated the shit out of me. Thankfully 'The Frighteners' is dynamic and imaginative, and shifts surprisingly darkwards in tone towards the end. I have a weird liking for MJF and for some reason always think there's something a bit dodgy about him. On a more worrying level I found myself sickeningly jealous of J Comb's haircut, although it was nice to see the uptight dweebmeister tearing off in his motor with a Sonic Youth track blaring from his stereo (unless I've made this bit up).

BODY MELT - Very good antipodean 'Street Trash' / Cronenbergesque medical horror, again with unwelcome comedy elements which in any case I could accomodate given the evil placentas and tripped out rib extractions on show. Dunno how well known this one is, I never hear all that much mention of it these days, but it certainly deserves some cult acknowledgement. Crammed full of grotesque characters, colourful gore and alienated suburban weirdness, plus it also has a go at one of the things I loath most in life, the organised fitness / leisure industry. Combines Harold Bishop with a rave - era soundtrack.

I watched this for the first time the other night (courtesy of a sale from Darthelvis on here). I first read about this film back in the early 90's in The Dark Side, which featured some cracking stills of the FX work and hadn't thought about it for nearly 20 years until I saw it listed on the DVD Trades thread so I to snap it up. Pretty decent film, but for me the best part was seeing Harold Bishop swearing!

Vampix 22nd October 2012 08:52 AM

I remember having Body Melt on a UK VHS, years ago.It featured artwork from Brian Yuzna's Society on the front cover for some strange reason.I also read about the film in DS magazine, and remember the stills you mention. That was what made me want to pick it up, that and the fact the FX were done by the same team behind Peter Jackson's Braindead. It wasn't a bad flick.

Two "modern day" HK comedies...
More polished and less heavy on the unpc jokes than their older variants but still ok I guess. :)

Love on a Diet
Fat Choi Spirit

I probably enjoyed Love on a Diet the most.

Love Body Melt.

AAAnyway.

The Raid. With the comm. F this and F that, michty! Interested to see that the blu has u/c & UK Theatrical cuts. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm.

The Tunnel. Know this was dissed a while back by some on here, but I liked it. Echoes of TBWP certainly, and for a hardcore horror gamer, some nice touches haha. Cool "reveal" as well imo.;)

Being Flynn. Can see why De Niro went for this role, best job I've seen him do since Jacknife, good enough story etc, though might not have enough severed penis monsters for some Labbers

The last movie I watched was Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. The last movie I saw in theatre was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory on opening night.
