Just watched

The Crazies (Remake)

I was a little surprised how much I enjoyed this! The action/horror starts within the first 5 minutes, so there is no hanging around. The whole tone and atmosphere of the movie was very well captured. I haven't seen Romero's for eons, so can't really remember how close this was, but it deserves to stand up by itself really. Not bad at all.

Watched Phantom of Death last night. It was ok but nothing special. My favourite part was the second killing, I thought that was pretty cool.

Just watched the wonderful T-Force (1995) on VHS. Great rip-off of Universal Soldier, directed by Richard Pepin!

Thriller A Cruel Picture I've seen. it's enjoyable and quite artistic in it's action sequences in parts. To be honest though, the hardcore shots were completely pointless and I got rid of it, intending to buy the version without. To me they actually cheapen the film a bit.

Oooh! Thriller: A Cruel Picture is one of the best rape/revenge films, gag. It's great. Good point about those shots, blob. Though some would say they make her pain worse? Eh, whatever. Mind you the other version has the eye scene cut out too, if I'm not mistaken.

Hmmm.. shame about the eyeball scene but when it was being released I read a lot about it and it was all along the lines that the hardcore scenes were just thrown in as a distributor afterthought for added 'adult' value. I don't even think it's Cristina Lindberg. I imagine the most true version would be without the XXX scenes but with the eyeball scene intact. I think with the second edition they were trying to replicate the U.S. 'They Call Her One Eye' version as closely as possible, so maybe the eyeball scene was originally shorter in that.

Just watched

Shutter Island

I kinda enjoyed it. Kept changing directions all the time and kept you guessing right up to the end. But when the end came, it raised more questions than it really answered. I think this will end up like Donnie Darko for example when it is open to all kinds of interpretations as to what really happened. Interesting and clever.

I haven't seen it yet at home (I saw it at the cinema) but I thought Martin Scorsese had made a masterpiece of a B-movie -- and I mean that as a compliment. I really want to see it again knowing the ending even though, when I saw it at the cinema, I saw the 'twist' coming as the film unfolded and was amazed when the others I saw it with was surprised at the end.

As well as having it on my Lovefilm rental list, I also have Denis Lehane's book waiting for when I have a spare week to go through it; as well as having a massive pile of unwatched DVDs and BDs, I also have a load of unread books!

Speaking of which, last night I watched Michael Hoffman's wonderful adaptation of The Last Station which makes me want to start that copy of War and Peace that I've been putting off for what must be a couple of years now.
