From the list, I reckon it might be the original Mad Max...I'm a huge fan of Ghosts Of The Civil Dead and The Proposition...and The Chant Of Jimmie Blacksmith was astounding...I did like Picnic At Hanging Rock, but it does have moments of wallowing in it's own artiness...as does Walkabout, though it is undoubtedly a masterpiece nonetheless...I thought Wolf Creek was exceptionally good and Dead End Drive In is a stormer of a flick, oft over-looked. Long Weekend was superb and would often creep me out in late night BBC screengins when I was young...likewise The Last Wave spread under your skin in a glorious way. Most Australian genre pieces have their good points - even Turkey Shoot is hilariously entertaining despite being dreadful - with the notable exception of Razorback which is simply abysmal crap with no redeeming features - a half interesting initial premise ruined completely. |

The Australian flick I am pretty desperate to see - especially in a nice restoration! - is Wake In Fright. Pretty interested in seeing Night Of Fear too. Never managed to catch up with either of them. |

It appears that NIGHT OF FEAR hasn't been released. Bourke's LADY STAY DEAD is one sleazy little number indeed.

The excellent CHANT OF JIMMIE BLACKSMITH is available in a nice R0 2-disc 30th Anniversary edition from Oz (I have it & it's well worth picking up).I'm going to get the new australian release of Wake In Fright (aka OUTBACK the title most people probably know the film under)when it goes down a bit in price. It's also available on Blu Ray from Oz for fans with players.I'm beginning to wish I'd added Picnic At Hanging Rock,Road Games & Long Weekend to my favourite Ozzie films as all are excellent & the UK 3 discer of the former with both cuts is recommended.Fantastic documentary too.

I had to choose Mad Max 2. Possibly my very favourite action film.

Night of Fear is out on Australian dvd. http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/content.php?contentid=59044 I watched it,and knowing it was supposed to be the first part of a tv series (which was never made since this was banned),it's pretty daring for it's time. Yes this was made for tv! "Terry Bourke's Night of Fear was originally meant to be the pilot for an Australian TV-series titled "Fright." However, the censors banned it on the grounds of "indecency and obscenity." That is unfortunate, as it would have made a great TV series, as this was a pretty good movie in its own right. Although you can tell it was a pilot, as the movie has opening titles very much like a TV show (and it is called "Fright), plus it only goes for 50 minutes and there is pretty much no dialogue." I really like Roadgames and Mad Max is a classic but there's still a lot I have to watch... Last edited by bdc; 1st February 2010 at 09:23 AM. |
