Watched a cracking little British double bill yesterday. Tigon's HAUNTED HOUSE OF HORROR,followed by Jack Clayton's THE INNOCENTS. When watching The Innocents,it's easy to see where Shymalan and Amenabar grabbed some ideas from. |
HHOH has always been a favourite of mine. It was one of the first non-Hammer colour horror films I ever saw as a kid, along with Fright. |
The first Brit horror i ever saw was Dr Terror's House of Horrors:cool: |
Mine was Fiend Without A Face back in the 70's (also the first horror film I ever saw). |
I really must get around to buyinf Fiend. Haven't seen it since i was a kid. The first horror i ever saw was either The Blob (Remake) or Nightmare on Elm Street. I cant really remember but it was definitely one of those two. |

I didnt know that. Thanks for the warning. |
Hardly a British classic but one of my favourites features the classic British horror pairing of Peter Cushing & Christopher Lee, Horror Express. This really needs a decent release, all I've got at the moment is the full screen Cinema Club disc which features the BBC's print of the movie. |
Some people hate it but I also enjoyed the Cushing/Lee Nothing But The Night. |
Yeah I've got that on a French import Vince.Thoroughly enjoyed it. It's also available on a double bill disc with THE SKULL. |

I was never a fan of Torture Garden or Tales That Witness Madness though From Beyond The Grave is another quirky anthology film. |
Asylum is another great anthology from Amicus, the only weak story in this is the Britt Ekland/Charlotte Rampling one imo.I'd love to see Robert Powell & Geoffrey Bayldon involved in a DVD release of this classic. |
There's a nice release of Asylum in Anchor Bay's Amicus coffin box. Apparently Bayldon was a late replacement for Spike Milligan who pulled out. That would have interesting to see. |
Dark Sky's ASYLUM release on r1 is superb. When it comes to the old anthologies,TALES FROM THE CRYPT is tops for me. Cushing's turn as Grimsdyke in POETIC JUSTICE takes a bit of beating! AND ALL THROUGH THE HOUSE is another classic entry. You're right Vince.Torture Garden was bollocks, and the only letdown in the Amicus anthology canon.:ohwell: |
Tales That Witness Madness is even worse than Torture Garden despite the great cast. I liked both Tales From The Crypt and Vault Of Horror though the Michael Craig story in the latter was pretty pointless. Crypt wins out for me. |
I quite liked BARGAIN IN DEATH Vince.I found it better than the Curt Jurgens THIS TRICK'LL KILL YOU segment. |
I didn't like the Bargain story that much. I think Arthur Mullard and the two berks from Doctor In The House ruined it a bit. The Tom Baker story was my favourite, with the Terry Thomas segment close behind. |
Yep the Tom Baker Voodoo tale was class as well. |
I liked the Midnight Mess story with Daniel & Anna Massey as well. That ending was great! |

Yep,for once a Vipco disc triumphs! |
I don't own Vault on disc, but have seen the BFI restored print that regularly crops up on Film4 & Channel 4.Why can't someone just release that version onto DVD? |
When i was a kid the first story of Asylum were Richard Todd chops up his wife and her body parts start moving on their own really creeped me out. |
The thought of Peter Cushing's character keeping his son's decaying corpse in a coffin in his house creeped me out when I watched Asylum for the first time. That, and the scene where Robert Powell crushes Herbert Lom's mechanical doll underfoot and you see the little fella's intestines oozing out, urgh! :ack: :D |
The only Amicus anthology that was below par was TORTURE GARDEN.... |
Did anyone here like Eden Lake? I thought it was pretty good. Better then The Chrildren. |
Re:The Best Of British Horror Thread I enjoyed it - even if it was a bit downbeat. Children was ok - just took a while to get going. Sent from my HTC Hero using Tapatalk |

One of the best and most brutal British films of recent years. |
The 20 best British horror/exploitation; First 3 only in order "The Wicker Man" "Witchfinder General" "Blood on Satan's Claw" "Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell" "Peeping Tom" "Twins of Evil" "Curse of Frankenstein" "Vampire Lovers" "Satanic Rites of Dracula" "Dog Soldiers" "The Descent" "Theatre of Blood" "Tower of Evil" "Island of Terror" "Hands of the Ripper" "Frightmare" "Shaun of the Dead" "The Devils" "Hellraiser" "Death Line" Most overrated? Hammer's "Dracula". Groundbreaking once for sure with a (for then) nicely erotic/fangy Drac and a nice twist on Van Helsing by a top form Cushing. Mostly drab now though as a film in its own right, with a stupid self-inflicted plot hole and other weak, silly changes and an overall awful adaptation of Stoker's novel. |
Can't argue with THE WICKER MAN being top dog. You've got good taste. Nicolas Cage's performance was unbelievable.LOL |

Nice to see Freak has included my fave Hammer flicks in his top 20, Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell, The Satanic Rites of Dracula and Twins of Evil.I've also got a soft spot for The Vampire Lovers as it was the first horror movie I ever saw. That reminds me I must pick up the Optimum disc at some point, anyone know whether it's fully uncut? |
