I read about the scene with the Hippo's. Doubt I will ever see the film.

The BBFC cut about 12m from the film in the late 60's.

That's pretty surpsing... the American release was missing 45 minutes!

I wonder what they cut for the US release? Which was for the R rating I believe. The BBFC mainly cut the animal scenes, rotting corpses and some violence. Unlike the BBFC the MPAA rarely ever cut animal cruelty. From what I've heard in the US version they removed the political and social context which brought the running time down a bit and mainly focused on the scenes of carnage.

Also there has been rumours that some of the scenes were staged for the documentary.

Sounds about right - remove the already questionable context and leave nothing but nihilism and destruction! ha.

Maybe the UK version but a further 12 minutes from the already trimmed US release? What was the running time? The version I have is 2 hours and 9 minutes (there about) and the US original release ran 83mins.

It wouldn't surprise me, all of the animal murders look like a set up.

A port of a lousy video version which I discovered to my annoyance.Avoid & go r1 where I assume a better source was used.I also had the abysmal heavily cut 'R' version of Hundra from Blackhorse too.I'll never buy any of their titles again

I've never seen this. After the lamentable Curfew I got a bit tired of the 'People terrorized in house' scenario and tended to avoid.
One of the best examples of this type of film exluding NOTLD was the Canadian thriller Siege which Thorn EMI released on video here.

By the way, Philleh, you can have a look at the BBFC cuts to the film

AFRICA ADDIO was classified 'X' for its theatrical release in 1967 with the
following cuts -

D Reel 3 - All shots of animals being slowly done to death (eg elephants,
buffalo and antelopes either full of spears or being repeatedly shot) were
removed as far as possible.

D Reel 4 - Shot of man bleeding from stomach and the shot of pile of
severed hands were removed.
Shots of bloated or rotting corpses in CU or MS, both in river
and on its banks were removed.

D Reel 5 - All shots of animals that are killed, but not killed outright
were removed. Sight of hippo bleeding after being shot in the river was
also removed.

D Reel 6 - Shot of fleeing Arab being drowned was removed.
Shots of rotting corpses were removed.

D Reel 7 - All shots of rotting or rotted corpses were removed.
The entire episodes of two prisoners being shot was removed.

(Please note these cuts were transcribed from handwritten notes in the
file.)

I have the uncut BU version & the killing of the Hippos deleted from many prints is horrific. They are pierced with dozens of spears and suffer prolonged agonising deaths.

Cheers Angel!

This is an odd one though:

"D Reel 5 - All shots of animals that are killed, but not killed outright
were removed. Sight of hippo bleeding after being shot in the river was
also removed."

It almost implies that the scenes where animals are killed outright were allowed to stay in?
