Yeah, like I said, I don't follow any particular team(all though I've always had a soft spot for Liverpool since the 80's), but I would no doubt contribute to a football thread
I think the members who would post on a football thread are all aware of the rules and playing fair to others.
By now we all know which members we can have a laugh with, and which ones to avoid.
I really don't think it would be a major problem, and would be easier to track conversations rather than having to go back and forth between members home pages.
It could be closed down and never mentioned again at the first sign of antisocial behaviour.
