Hi everyone,

Do we have many fans of classic British cinema of the past? There's a great new collection from Studiocanal who have been releasing a bunch of old classic British films, fully re-mastered and stuffed with special features. There's some great films in the set!

I got sent the whole series for work and have been working my way through them and they're brilliant. My fave of the bunch has to be The Ladykillers for sure.

Anyone own any of these...
  1. Went The Day Well? (1942)
  2. Dead Of Night (1945)
  3. The Captive Heart (1946)
  4. Brighton Rock (1947)
  5. Hue & Cry (1947)
  6. It Always Rains On Sunday (1947)
  7. Nicolas Nickleby (1947)
  8. Fallen Idol (1948)
  9. Scott Of The Antarctic (1948)
  10. Kind Hearts And Coronets (1949)
  11. Queen Of Spades (1949)
  12. The Third Man (1949)

  17. The Man In The White Suit (1951)
  18. Tales Of Hoffman (1951)
  19. Angels One Five (1952)
  20. The Cruel Sea (1953)
  21. The Titfield Thunderbolt (1953)
  22. The Belles Of St Trinians (1954)
  23. Hobson's Choice (1954)
  24. An Inspector Calls (1954)
  25. The Maggie (1954)
  26. The Dam Busters (1955)
  27. The Ladykillers (1955)
  28. Woman In A Dressing Gown (1957)
  29. Ice Cold In Alex (1958)
  30. Quartermass And The Pit (1958)
  31. I'm All Right Jack (1959)
  32. Peeping Tom (1960)
  33. School for Scoundrels (1960)
  34. Payroll (1961)
  35. Billy Liar (1963)
  36. The Servant (1963)
  37. Sparrows Can’t Sing (1963)
  38. Darling (1965)
  39. Far From The Madding Crowd (1967)

A lot of great films there, plus a few I've yet to see too.

I have quite a few of these releases myself and highlights include: Dead of Night, Don't Look Now, Kind Hearts and Coronets, Peeping Tom, Quatermass and the Pit, The Third Man, and of course The Wicker Man.

Queen of Spades is an often overlooked gem too. A shame they didn't release that one in HD.

Demoncrat 18th August 2015 11:57 AM

No The Singer Not The Song?

C'est la vie....

Quatermass & The Pit fae 67, unless it's QII youve been sent, or the TV programme???

Ahem.

Have a few of them....nice to see The Servant in there, an underrated film imho.

Definitely check out The Ladykillers if you get the chance, BE. I'm sure you'll love it - excellent comedy.

It's Roy Ward Baker Quatermass film, Demoncrat from 67. Great, great movie! One of Hammer's best imo.

Oh, I have The Ladykillers - a great film indeed.

Kind Hearts And Coronets (1949) and The Ladykillers (1955) are two very fine classic comedies. Lots of witty lines, great actors, hilarious twists and turns - both films show exactly what modern-day comedies are lacking.

As for Peeping Tom (1960)... I've only seen it once, but I guess I quite liked it back in the day...

I really don't know. I only know that I LOVED watching this movie. Cinematography, score, and, of course, mainly Carl Boehm (or Karlheinz Böhm, to his friends) - 'impressive' is a word that sounds convincing. But it does not even come close to doing justice to this masterpiece.

Great PT review, Prince!

I'm yet to see Kind Hearts but really looking forward to getting around to watching it now :woot:

I have Dead of Night and Quatermass and the Pit but I think that is it, I think it is but I'd need to check my collection! Oh, I have the dvd of Woman in a Dressing Gown, Billy Liar, Darling.

There are a few of these on my wishlist that I need to pick up including (but not limited to) The Third Man (yet another copy), Dance Hall, The Belles of St. Trinians, School for Scoundrels.

That's a brilliant list. A while ago I compiled my own:

Top 10 Greatest British Films | Film 365

The Ladykillers is always somewhere at the top, wonderful film. Scott Of The Antarctic, The Dam Busters, Queen of Spades or Dead of Night, for sure. And anything that starred Richard Todd or Leslie Banks, I find watchable. Cottage To Let, Went the Day Well.

Very impressive list there, Dj!

What are your thoughts on each of this? Got a couple of faves out of your Vintage Classics collection?

Many thanks.
I like them all and my favorite is Kind Hearts and Coronets, the best black comedy ever.

Dr Strangelove is a challenger for that title, but Kind Hearts and Coronets is certainly the best comedy about a multiple murderer, and one I never tire of watching.

Nice surprise,It got a lot of criticism for not being 100% accurate, but you can not deny Oldman's and Webb's performance were superb (although changing Sid's swastika t-shirt was a big mistake).

a nice piece of info that slipped past me is that restored versions of Blood from the Mummy's Tomb and Demons of the Mind were prepared for Frightfest 2017 - perhaps blus won't be far behind? Anyway here is the artwork for the adverts.

Those are very much in line with the cover designs for Studio Canal's existing line of Hammer blu rays. It's high time more of Hammer's 70s output was given the BD treatment, so here's hoping...

Horrible aren't they.

When you think of the poster art for these films the covers shown are a disgrace.

Justin101 28th July 2017 11:48 AM

Where's The Nanny :(
It's in the Australian box set and available separately, I thought it'd be in the next round of UK releases.

I'm not a fan. The artwork would be good on a pop art T-shirt or bag, but not the front of a Blu-ray sleeve.

i'm confused as to who owns The Nanny rights as its listed on the Hollywood Classics website as a Fox movie? Are all the ones in the Aussie boxset owned by studiocanal?

EDIT: it is SC in the UK. must be Fox for the international rights!

Demdike@Cult Labs 28th July 2017 12:35 PM

The Nanny was last released in the UK via Optimum / Studio Canal so perhaps they still have the rights to it?

Pretty sure that the above is common knowledge already.

Crimson Blade 28th July 2017 12:47 PM

Never really took to STRAIGHT ON TILL MORNING and DEMONS OF THE MIND. Wonder if they'll restore the lost footage to DEMONS?

Will pick them all up eventually, though. Despite the dodgy covers.

Justin101 28th July 2017 12:55 PM

Yeah the Aussie box set is essentially the same that was in the Studio Canal DVD box set we got over here.

Rob4 28th July 2017 01:06 PM

i wonder if SC are more likely to bring out The Nanny in the Vintage Classics line as it maybe a better fit?

Demoncrat 28th July 2017 05:31 PM

When I think of Hammer
The words lurid and throbbing come to mind
These sleeves are neither
