Laurel And Hardy - Good, clean, classic comedy!

I watched A Chump At Oxford (1940) last night.

Whilst hugely enjoyable it's painfully clear the first twenty minutes were tacked on to make the film into a feature for the UK market. The opening scenes where Stan plays Agnes the maid were remade from an earlier short, From Soup To Nuts, with Anita Garvin reprising her role of the party hostess. Agnes herself/himself first appeared in the rather wonderful Another Fine Mess.

Once the fellas get to Oxford everything goes up a notch. There are some inspired scenes in the maze with a ghostly hand and Stan's performance as Lord Paddington is quite frankly brilliant. Eagle eyed viewers will notice Peter Cushing in one of his earliest roles as an Oxford toff with ensemble regular Charlie Hall playing another.

The classic tell me that again,surely the best bit of comedy writing ever.



Stanley: [reading newspaper] Listen to this... wealthy young widow with large fortune seeks male companionship... object matrimony.

Oliver: It's probably some old crab with a face that would stop a clock!

Stanley: Well, I'd marry her.

Oliver: You would!

Stanley: No, listen... I'd take some of the money, and I'd have her face lifted. Then we could settle down, congenial, and we would have to scrape chins any more... wouldn't have to work hard any more.

Oliver: Tell me that again.

Stanley: Well, I could take some of the money... and I'd have her skinned... and she'd be able to look at a clock without having to work hard any more... and we could settle down and scrape each other's chin... and congenial... if I didn't have to work hard anymore.

Oliver: I know exactly what you mean.

Did you know the Spanish version had different scenes with the prison governor as now played by Boris Karloff?

Why the hell wasn't this version on the dvd?

8 see's a nice collection of silents and two classic talkies,under the title of Blackmail,I would put either a few more Finlayson's or Mae Busch shorts in and called it after one of them.Would of made more sense paying tribute to actors that supported L & H than making up tentative titles.
If id of have called it anything it would of been The Wonderful Face Gurning World of Finlayson.
