David Simon is making a show about the rise of the porn industry in the 70s/80s, set in New York, including 42nd Street, The Deuce will star Maggie Gyllenhaal.

Sounds absolutely awesome.

Yes. To me she's Doctor Who's Claire Higgins.

She even reads some of the audio adventures the Beeb are producing regularly.

X Files: Field Trip. When a young married couple vanish in the woods and are then found as skeletons inside of just a couple of days, Mulder and Scully set off to investigate.. and find themselves in for one hell of a trip. I love the cleverness of this episode (Scully's hallucinatory experience is particularly amusing; there's something deliciously satisfying about having everyone parrot her own "plausible" theory (that she doesn't even believe herself) at her word-for-word, much to her own horror)) and there's an eerie plausibility to the nature of the menace that makes it genuinely unsettling (SPOILER for anyone who hasn't seen this episode!). There are fungi that span several acres, often underground, there are fungi with hallucinogenic properties, and there are plants that feed on living organisms, making this particular threat feel like something that could genuinely exist. That said, I would have loved to have heard the writers pitch this one to Chris Carter: "It's a giant killer mushroom!" As Mulder notes, "Sounds like crap when you say it." ;)

Started Earth 2 this afternoon. I remembered this short-lived (just the one season) mid 90s SF show as being pretty good, so picked up the DVD set and... it's still pretty good, actually. A bunch of colonists/refugees fleeing from an overcrowded Earth and a corrupt government (nothing much changes then) head for a habitable planet 22 years away, but while their wake-up from cryo-sleep goes fine, getting down to the planet turns into a bit of a disaster and once there, they find it may not be as uncharted or as uninhabited as they thought... This is a pretty decent stab at genuine SF on TV and I remember being disappointed it didn't last longer; there's even a trace of Lost in here somewhere. Also very sad that the actress who plays the little girl True has already left us; died of a rare form of leukemia at just 22. Awful. :( But this remains a pretty decent show and I'm glad I picked it up to see again.

RIP Log Lady.

Catherine Coulson has lost her battle with cancer.

Yes, very sad to hear this. :(

Nosferatu@Cult Labs 29th September 2015 08:25 AM

It is sad news, but she left an indelible mark on television and popular culture.

I finished watching Firefly for the first time yesterday, as a Whedon fan I was very curious about the show and how it's held in such great esteem with fans and critics alike. For the first few episodes I couldn't quite grasp what all the fuss was about but it wasn't until episode 5, 'Safe' that I had realised I was well and truly sucked into the 'Verse.

Each episode just got better until number 14, 'Objects in Space' it just ended... I had read books about Joss Whedon in the past but it had slipped my mind that they were given no warning about cancellation and it wasn't until I watched the gag reel that I remembered, the title card came up and it said (i'm paraphrasing) "This gag reel was edited together to be shown at the Firefly Christmas party, that turned out to be the wrap party just nobody knew it".

Over the Christmas/New Year break after they had finished up for the year Joss was given the call that Firefly had been pulled and he had to tell the cast and crew not to come back to work in January!

I'll be watching Serenity at some point in the next week or so :) :pop2:

It was a great series! For months after I had seen the full series I was going around calling everything "Shiney" use to annoy the wife!:)

The Returned returning!! Ahem. This French series held me right to the end of the first, so am v glad about this

Justin101 8th October 2015 11:56 AM

I really want to watch The Returned, never seen it, love the soundtrack by Mogwai and all the images and stills I've seen from the show look great, I'm just never finding the time for it

Currently starting the X-Files from episode 1 after getting the entire series for last Christmas haha, that's how behind in my watch pile I am.

it'smebilly 8th October 2015 10:58 PM

I watched the 'scream' TV series on Netflix. I was expecting it to be rubbish but was pleasantly surprised, think it captured the spirit of the films quite well. It has all the annoying hallmarks of today's Starbucks generation TV but I think it really works in its favour. A guilty pleasure and looking forward to season 2.

Been wating for this to come back on for ages such a great show where nothing realy happens its slow but gripping and keeps you interested because of how its potrade made directed etc etc. And shows you dont need to relie on lots of action violence gore cgi and the likes!! You just need a good story with good atmopshere.

Watching Angel season 4 again at the moment. I love this season, it's completely insane - by far Angels's best - but much like 24 it's a total pain in the arse as well because once you start, you can't stop! You never watch anything else while it's on, you're like, "I'll just watch the next one..." :headache:

gag 9th October 2015 03:50 AM

Find out when The Returned series 2 will air on Channel 4 - The Returned News - Cult - Digital Spy

Typical americans done a remake of returned if flopped so didnt commision a series 2

Really no surprise there then.

Americans just cant help themselves remaking everything

profondo rosso 9th October 2015 07:34 AM

Just finished NARCOS on Netflix, cracking series, very well acted, violent, sexy, political and great how they interlace actual historical footage of Pablo Escobar into it.

Glad they did not try and squeeze it into one season. Roll on season 2. Only 10 episodes a season is a bit short but works.

Wagner Moura who plays Pablo portrays a haunting sinister figure, gentle as a lamb one minute totally ruthless the next, mad as a box of frogs but power? wow!..... hard to believe this was true.

profondo rosso 9th October 2015 07:37 AM

The Man in the High Castle, whole season coming to Amazon Prime Nov 20th. If anyone caught the pilot episode a while back I thought this looked fantastic. Based on the Philip K Dick book.:woot:

SharonLynette 9th October 2015 06:47 PM

I've just started to get into Inspector Morse, having never viewing a single episode before my holiday this week I've fallen in love and picked up the complete box set. It will be much easier watching it without all those blooming adverts on ITV3. The theme tune at the end is so haunting and atmospheric. However tonight I'll be starting Jonathan Creek again.

Whilst away I also watched a few episode of Taxi, I loved it as a kid and it has to have one of my all time favourite TV themes, it's so relaxing and calming.

Make Them Die Slowly 9th October 2015 09:31 PM

SCREAM. Oddly annoying yet very likable TV slasher series that is weird mixture of nasty sub plots, surface gloss and some nice kills. The self awareness of genre and this being a spin off is played to absurd levels at times that will either irritate the f#ck out of the viewer or warm them to it's faults.

iank 12th October 2015 09:26 AM

Finished my latest run of Angel season 4. Y'know, I'm not the biggest fan of Angel in general - overall, I vastly prefer Buffy - but season 4 may well be one of my favourite seasons of any television show. It's completely OTT, magnificently epic - a deranged supernatural apocalyptic version of 24 - and the final run of the arc, with "Jasmine", the Goddess who takes everyone who sees her or hears her voice under her thrall and who sets out to bring Peace on Earth, albeit at the complete expense of free will, is one of the most batshit insane things I've ever seen on television. I love this season to bits.

Justin101 12th October 2015 10:04 AM

I've been trying to get into Angel, I love Buffy loads but Angel was always my least favourite character. My friends have all told me to persevere through Season 1 and assure me it gets much better! I think I only got about 8 episodes in.

iank 12th October 2015 09:20 PM

If nothing else, it's worth it to get to season 4. ;)

I was really disappointed that the DVD version of 'Smile Time' didn't contain a commentary track

MacBlayne 13th October 2015 10:43 AM

Has anybody here watched This Is England? The series just finished for good over a week ago and I'm going to miss it.

What a wonderful bunch of characters. You wish these people were real so you could hang out with them. There was an honest goodness to them.

If you haven't seen it and you think I'm describing the Midlands answer to the Waltons - beware. This show is grim and very distressing in parts. I felt sick during some scenes, like I couldn't breathe and I was in tears in other scenes (not since I watched The Snowman aged 5 have I ever cried to a TV show).

Shane Meadows and his talented cast deserve all the acclaim they get and I hope to see more from them all in the future.

Some of the best acting to come out of the UK in a long time, Vicky McClure is a force to be reckoned with! That scene at the Sunday dinner table was very uncomfortable!

Great show!

I love Angel. I was hooked from the very first episode. I was gutted when Doyle was killed off early doors. But then along comes Wesley again. To me the second series is the best with Drusilla and Darla on the rampage throughout.

It went downhill a little during series 4. Didn't help that i didn't like the character of Connor much, however it was only a slight dip and season 5 was superb.

I really need to rewatch the whole series again. I could start tonight, it's far superior to Grimm which i'm only three episodes into but is getting tedious due to it's shit CGI.

I finally got around to watching the last 6-7 episodes of the Walking Dead season 5. It was a slog to get that far but as soon as it got to Alexandria the whole thing changed it become exciting again.

The last shot of the finale episode was gutting, the look on Rick's face.

I joked to a lad in work that I was trying to catch up for Season 6 and that I've been watching season 5 for a year but I watched one last night and the rest today and it's was worth it!

Rik 17th October 2015 06:52 PM

My other half started watching Season 1 on Monday last week, by the end of tomorrow (whole day on her own while her kids are with their dad), she'll have caught up. For someone who doesn't like anything zombie related, she's hooked, just like I told her she would be 2 years ago!
