Kids Horror Films

There's no denying - we're OBSESSED WITH HORROR! This forum is full of threads discussing all things horror, from Hammer to Torture Porn and sleazy exploitation. These are all very 'adult' and 'grown-up', but what are the best horror films for kids? Either films you've grown up with and fell in luv with when you were younger, or films you've since found out about. In fact, what about TV cartoons such as the Casper The Friendly Ghost or The Addams Family?

Last night I watched the Disney not-so-classic film, The Black Cauldron again - The Horned King is one of the greatest baddies of all time.

What about Hocus Pocus? Easily one of the best kiddy halloween films ever...




Whilst I'm a huge fan of blood and guts, there's something about horror films/TV intended for a younger audience that is so great. Maybe its the innocence within them or the idea of magic?

Not a 'horror' film as such (more a ghost movie) but The Amazing Mr Blunden is a brilliant film for kids & adults.

The Monster Squad is a classic of Kids horror, the same goes for the animated film The Halloween Tree that featured the voice of Leonard Nimoy

I used to love this one when I was a kid...

An interesting distinction: I would consider the "ghost story" to be a subgenre of "horror".

I wouldn't class Topper or The Canterville Ghost as subgenre horror films myself. More like fantasy films to me. Amazing Mr Blunden is nearer a fantasy than a horror film too.

As with any genre, nothing is distinct or easy to categorise and no-one agrees on the definitions! There are such huge overlaps - a slasher film is as much "crime" as "horror", a supernatural horror film is also fantasy, SF is often horror and vice versa etc etc.

Things like Topper are comedy first and foremost, they just happen to have a ghost in!

"Fantasy" is far to broad a concept to be a useful term anymore I think. Most people just think of Tolkeinesque stuff when faced with the word, sadly.
