This was the 4th Hammer film I watched and I went into it expecting nothing really so i didnt read anything about it or read into the hype over Hammer fans etc. I watched it on a Saturday afternoon (the time in my eyes to watch classic cinema - Hammer Horror, John Wayne Westerns, Classic Bond etc). I found myself rooting for the characters and drawn into the story. A sign of a good film. I am glad I watched it. So now its on Blu its a buy for me.

Yikes! I was about to say 'calm down everyone' - thinking maybe they had just tidied up some of the existing effects - then I saw the scene comparrison shots! Those are pretty drastic alterations what were they thinking? I mean, people new to the film wouldn't have known/cared either way, and people who love the film would only ever be against that sort of tampering. Very strange . . .

George Lucas has a lot to answer for!
Without having seen the effects in the context of the movie, it's difficult to judge if they work or not. The lightning effects look good. But, with the data allowance on a BR, wouldn't it have been a good idea to have an option to watch the original. Doctor Who DVDs do!

To be honest, whether they work or not is immaterial. The fact is they shouldn't be there. They aren't part of the original film. Why change something 40 years later? It's pointless and unnecessary. Let me put it this way, if everyone says this is okay and 'not too bad', what next? What other films in the Hammer catalogue will they start tinkering with?
