I like the term 'classy slashers'!

My list will have a lot of gialli in it.

Now, depending on how pedantic you want to be, some will say that some of the films above are not really horror films, but if we're going to split hairs then Alien and Jaws aren't horror films either and I bet they'll be near the top of most people's lists. And, besides, if you don't think getting bummed in the dirt by a toothless hillbilly isn't horrific, then you slightly scare me!!
Don't forget the visceral terror that the Witch in Disney's Snow White.. can instil in the formative young mind. I know that she was a big influence on my choice of entertainment in later years... Just t' put t' cat amongst t' pigeons

Probably not strictly 'horror', but it's a booze-soaked nightmare of a film - felt like I had a hangover at the end of it . . .

I was going to put One Flew Over the Cookoo's Nest at #50 but thought that was going too far....Even if Nurse Ratchet is one of the most evil bitches in cinema history. Swop it for Play Misty for Me.

I guess I'm pedantic, as personally I would never label Taxi Driver as a horror film. My rule of thumb is the director's intent and/or if the film uses staples of the horror genre. (Alien and Jaws clearly use cheap scares, so they're in.)

But in fairness here's a view backing your theory up:

Apparently it was influential to Mario Bava and look how his output helped shape the genre over the years.
