Savini certainly outdid himself with the gore in this one. Just a pity his thespian skills aren't the same.....

First saw DOTD on VHS when me and my friends used to rent horror every weekend. We were all blown away. I got to see it on the big screen at frightfest a couple of years ago as well (along with the others up to land) which was pretty fantastic! Everyone cheered when Ken Foree decided not to kill himself and fought back againts the zombies (accompanied by some fitting music) at the end. One of my best cinema experiences ever.

Sounds great BZ! I really must try to make it to the Glasgow showing. What video label did you first see it on? Has DAWN ever been cut on video in the UK Vince?

Basically yes. Every release. 1. The old EIV video was the heavily cut theatrical print (the cuts list is immense) which was then shorn of a further 12 secs (additional bloody shootings) by Ferman. 3 mins 58 secs cuts total. 2. BMG submitted the full Director's Cut 8 years later. Ferman cut 6 secs from it (the exploding head, the biting of the woman's arm, and the shooting of the zombie children). 3. The cuts to the DC were waived in 2003 for the BMG DVD. The cuts to the theatrical print were waived for the Arrow DVD the following year. There's a fairly good BBFC case study here. I KNEW that EIV video was cut.If I remember right,it contained some of the worst jump-cuts in history. The cast of DAWN.Ken Foree became something of a cult figure on the horror circuit, whilst the others,Emge,Ross and Reiniger never had much of a career. Emge, most notably in Hennenlotter's BASKET CASE 2,Ross in CREEPSHOW and MADMAN (Under a pseudonymn),but Reiniger apparently did nowt else, until his cameo in Snyder's remake......

Yes the EIV video was absolutely worthless. The cinema print was just as bad and the cuts were painfully obvious. As with The Evil Dead video basically every gore scene was reduced. Even the arm removal during the blood pressure machine scene was cut. |
