There are a few reasons I read , but one was apparently so as the name would sound more American and make the film more appealing , especially to the US market, I dont know if its true or not. though.

Many of them preferred Anglicized names. Antonio Marghereti became 'Anthony M. Dawson' and Giovanni Lombardo Radice became 'John Morghen' (to name only two). My own (Italian) grandfather changed his from Pietro Palleschi to 'Peter Palace' (which sounds like a football stadium).

Vincent Of The Dead might have been even less subtle.

Fred of the Dead.

Incidentally do you prefer Zombie Creeping Flesh or Nights Of Terror (Burial Ground)? Difficult choice between 2 mess-terpieces.

Burial Ground hands down V.
There was a lot more effort went into the make up and a bit of inventiveness with the zoms,i.e scythe.

Plus Peter Bark is more terrifying than all of the zombies in both films put together.

The secret love child of Dario Argento and Andre Previn.

Far more effort than ZCF...Purple greasepaint and some chopped liver with a corn syrup sauce....yum!
