I just LOVE "Martyrs" as a whole; finest piece of French horror so far for me, with "Inside" and "Haute Tension" following very, very closely...but nevertheless, "Martyrs" is my champ: The mood, the narrative and- yes!- that revelation totally worked for me...but I can see why it's not a fitting finale for everybody.

I think I let the whole hype get to me, reading about people vomiting and running out of cinema's horrified.
I waited and waited to be disgusted and it never happened. Thought it was good but not great.

I'm a big fan, but Inside is still the best of the new-wave of French horror in my opinion. Martyrs was a well constructed little shocker, and the opening hour was exhilarating and continuously surprising, so the final third where it slowed down was a little out of place with the rest of the movie; but it's also what lingers in the mind the most. The scenes of the girl getting pummelled by that brute were nothing but savage... very well choreographed though! ha

I've heard that the French DVD release of Martyrs is longer than the UK & US uncut/unrated versions, does anyone know whether there's any truth to this?

There are no censor edits, so the difference is probably the speedup conversion.

Yeah, thanks vincenzo.I'll buy the UK DVD release now as it's only £5.49 delivered from HMV online.I think I read that information about the French release being longer on one of Amazon's customer reviews, probably not the best place to read about potential censorship issues. It's good to hear Inside is also finally getting a UK DVD release too, I've got the Dimension Extreme disc but could be tempted into double dipping if the UK release betters the R1 in any way.

It will most certainly have a better cover sleeve art wok than the R1. The picture on the US sleeve is just plain gross
