Got my free Macabre DVD in the mail today. I have to say it looks very nice. I haven't checked the disc yet. I noticed two typos on the back. Dunno if it's mentioned before? First one is the "staring" Bernice Stegers one. I'm sure she was staring after the accident in the beginning, but I'm pretty sure it must mean something else Another one I noticed was that Antonio Avati's (Pupi Avati's brother, writer, producer) name is spelled wrong. It's spelled Avanti on the back. Now I did check my old DFW release which also says Avanti Will check out the disc soon. And I'll do a comparison between my DFW release and this one soon as well. |

Ah the beloved typo - our good companion through seemingly every DVD release! Staring huh? Thank goodness she is in the film - that's be the flimsy excuse. |

Well, the disc looks great! Better than my nonanamorphic DVD by DFW. The prints are identical though (notice the scratches in the screengrabs). The Arrow DVD looks sharper but that's obviously because it's anamorphic. I don't know how the AB release compares. DFW: ARROW: |

PAL not clearer anyway? The whole package is a corker mate.

The AB looks nice but the Arrow dvd looks better. Also unlike AB, Arrow have added English subs for the 'one year later' caption which is in italian.

Hope you don't mind me reviving this thread! Somehow, I never got to see "Macabre" over the years, indeed, I have never owned a copy (not sure how that happened!). Anyway, I finally got around to watching the Arrow release tonight and I heartily enjoyed it. A fine film, I thought, great atmosphere and fantastic characters (Lucy was a genius invention!) and just enough lightness of touch and tongue-in-cheek to win me over completely! But what hit me was that it was unusual to see such a film in such a pristine version for my first viewing! Most such films I saw over the years on battered rental tapes or multi-generational copies - panned and scanned into confusion and audio drop outs ahoy! So thanks Arrow for such a great package! I am almost glad it took me so long to see it! |

Glad you enjoyed it - I think it drips with atmosphere - easily L Bava's most interesting film and I can certainly say that on the old rental tape I had it was a fuzzy old mess so this DVD is better than I ever expected it to look. There was debate about cleaning it up further but at the time it was agreed it wouldn't benefit it - and I know this is an anathema to some but the odd crackle and pop gives us video veterans a warm glow... |

Indeed! The occasional reel change pop reassures me I haven't strayed too far from film viewing base camp! |
