My major concern is how Arrow packs their steelbooks as I never ordered one from them.

Ever the insightful review from Mr. Tooze there

I received the BD today and I have a question for anyone familiar with the films (I am not). Were they always washed out with flat contrast? I'm looking through the first one and the gamma seems to be off for the whole film. Everything looks grey rather than black. I would post an image to illustrate, but not sure if that's allowed?

This is a DVDTalk PQ review for the out of print AnimEigo Dvd:

"The images here are razor sharp and Animeigo sets things right with these disc, both of which are presented it their original aspect ratios with wonderfully bright and vivid colors. There's a very high level of detail in both the foreground and the background of the image, and nary a hint of compression artifacts or edge enhancement. The bloods are bright red, the water is deep blue, and the snow is crisp and pristine looking. Print damage is pretty much non-existent save for the odd dust speck here and there. The movies both look fantastic."

Blu-ray Authority AnimEigo review:

"Lady Snowblood is presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen. The print looks pristine in most scenes, with no grain and minimal debris to be seen. This allows for such a clean, sharp visual presence, you won’t be able to believe your eyes in some instances. I found the colors to be bright and bold, but within a natural scope, while flesh tones are normal throughout. The black levels are superb here also, as even the darkest of scenes looks smooth and refined. This is simply a top notch visual treatment in all respects, so kudos to AnimEigo. "

I remember renting the movies years ago and thought the pq looked good. Could be the old AnimEigo dvd transfer was smothered in DNR and color corrected and the new Arrow release is the true representation. I've cancelled my preorder , the steelbook is nice but for $30 I'll wait for more reviews.

I've read about a similar thing with some of the Eureka Japanese titles where the black levels are raised. I know Japan had different black levels for NTSC to the US but have no idea how that would account to HD. Possibly they master taking SD into account and it hasn't been corrected? The general fix if so seems to be to switch to an RGB setting if possible.

The only Japanese film I have on BD is Battle Royale so I haven't seen it for myself.

Got mine here on my desk at the moment thanks to Arrow. Might give it a watch before I have to venture into the outside world later today.
