August 23 1967 - The Roger Corman counter-culture film 'The Trip' is released to American cinemas. Prior to making the film, Corman himself took LSD to research it's effects. The film encountered huge censorship problems in the UK and was refused a certificate 4 times by the BBFC in 1967, 1971 and 1980, and again for video in 1988. It was eventually released on DVD fully uncut in 2004

October 6, 1927 - 'The Jazz Singer', the world's first sound film, is released in America. Despite being known as the world's first 'talkie', the film actually contains barely two minutes worth of synchronized talking in total and most of this was improvised. The rest of the dialogue is presented through the caption cards, or intertitles, which was standard in silent movies of the era

October 10th, 1924 - Film director Edward D. Wood was born. Often regarded as being 'the worst film-maker in the history of cinema', Wood was actually a genius who never let problems stop him from his love - making movies. His work is due for a reappraisal

Perfectly chosen Susan, and what an extraordinary courageous performance Camille Keaton gave Meir Zarchi. It must have been a huge disappointment to see her work dismissed by the likes of Roger Elbert who failed to see past the aggressive ad campaign and what is a powerful, troubling film. It's one of the genuine masterpieces on the DPP list...
