I am going in for a operation next week. As a reward for being brave my wife is treating me to a few new dvds. I really fancy Manhattan Baby as I've never seen it. I love Fulci. I love Zombi 2, The Beyond, COTLD and thought The Black Cat was a great movie. Is Manhattan worth the money then? Just its one of the few I'd not seen in the past.

I quite like the vibe of Manhattan baby, even though many critics don't. It's not Fulci's best work, I think we'd all agree on that, but it has some inspired moments and...well...it's Fulci! If you don't go in expecting a masterpiece, you might find it enjoyable enough. It's certainly better than Murder Rock, now that was pretty bad, even for latter Fulci.

![]() ![]() yes MB is a biiit slow in places, but it is also a batshit as **** film. for years all i had was the old EV print (aka Possessed) and when i finally saw a OAR print, was amazed at the difference ahem. i realise im gushing, but as ive always stated you either GET Fulci or you dont....and you seem to be "one of us, one of us" lord, i need some coffee. ![]() good luck with op btw (nowt serious, i trust???) |

My opinion: It is not top notch Fulci and it is even more incoherent than his other works of supernatural surrealism. The acting is quite dodgy and it seems rather rushed and less carefully constructed than his best films. But it is tremendous fun. It has some lovely trippy oneiric scenes that are rewarding and it does keep you interested. The Shameless print is wonderful (especially if you grew up with the fuzzy pan'n'scan UK VHS titled "Possessed"!). So, yes, it is well worth buying! ![]() |

Good luck with the operation - I am a bit wary of what MB might do - it makes no narrative sense whatsoever - it might send you crazy in hospital! ![]() Actually you'll probably laugh yourself better! I'd also be tempted by The Frightened Woman although it may prove a little too stimulating ![]() Hope the op goes well ![]() |

As I said above, Murder Rock is the only Fulci I didn't completely enjoy. With Lovelock, Emerson and Fulci involved I expected something better. It's not unwatchable and there are moments when Fulci's directorial flair come to the fore, but overall it's a bit dull and uninteresting. I've enjoyed everything else he's made to a greater or lesser degree. Nothing beats his late 70s/early 80's output though. From Zombie to New York Ripper the man is an unstoppable force of genius.
