Good call, but I'd still throw in 2001: A Space Odyssey simply for the visuals - it's the cold, technological film which makes you appreciate Silent Running's warmth and humanity even more.

I hate 2001.

Only seen it once, many years ago, it bored the pants off me. Sorry.

Solaris was another. In space no-one can hear you yawn.
