A bona fide masterpiece, a fine addition to your collection.

I need to get on top of writing some reviews. I seem to come and go. At the moment I'm struggling.
I just finished watching Paths of Glory though and yes it's an absolutely stunning piece of cinema. I have to admit it's probably the best Kubrick film I've seen. And that's from someone who adores The Shining.

Arrived today from Music Magpie via Amazon. Stallone's Cobra. Been after this one for a while, seems to be out of OOP these days. Unless you buy the five film Sly boxset. Attachment 249442

The five film set is very good. Well worth the tenner it cost me from Amazon a couple of years ago.

I watched Cobra right away but only ended up seeing Demolition Man and Assassins for the first time on Blu in mid December just gone.

Love Cobra love the soundtrack but the film always feels like it's about 45 minutes long don't know why just always seems to fly by.

It's been a conundrum for a while. I'm not keen on Assassins, found it really boring the one and (I think) only time I watched it, when it first came out. The Specialist I've seen a few times, but I only ever felt was average. Which leaves three classics all with decent artwork in their individual release form. I've been wanting Cobra for a while, one of my favourite Stallone films. I'll get T&C and Demolition Man in due course

I got some back pay from a very delayed cost of living pay rise so I treated myself to a rather expensive 4k that I wouldn’t have normally bought.

Great film. I watched it on Blu for the first time over Christmas. Followed it the day after with Hill's Streets of Fire which wasn't anywhere near as good on first viewing.

Does the 4K have both versions? I ask as i've only seen the directors cut on Blu and dvd.

It does yes which is what got me interested in buying it. I've only seen the new edit with the comic book bits added in it, I'm interested to see the original version.

How am I reading this Dem? Streets of Fire is better than you remember from your first watch?

No. Heard positive things about it the last couple of years though, so we'll see. :behindsofa:

Oh ok. That's a shame. Streets of Fire is my favourite Walter Hill film and one of my favourite films overall.

It does stand out a bit from Hills other work in that regard. I first saw it as a teenager and fell in love with it. Probably before I knew who Walter Hill even was.

A bargain from CEX as it's only just come out. John Carpenter on the commentary track!

Demdike@Cult Labs 13th January 2024 11:13 AM

That's a thing of beauty, Justin. It'll look stunning in 4K, but my God! Get those bloody great Cex stickers off.

Mine go in the bin immediately outside the shop the minute i've made the purchase... unless they need extra attention.

Have you seen Rio Bravo before? Fantastic film. The likes of John Carpenter and Quentin Tarantino adore it. Carpenter obviously, as he's remade it several times.

They're off now  as well as the 4K HDR sticker. Have to be careful with slip covers can't just rip them off in the streets

I've not seen it yet, it's in that WB Westerns set which I bought last summer, but glad I held off as I can see this newly remastered edition instead. I might triple bill it with Assault on Precinct 13 and Ghosts of Mars  (I won't haha). I will watch it this evening though, it can be my early film.

Early film? It's two and a half hours. It'll be your late film as well.

I'd forgotten you had that same western set as i. It looks gorgeous in that set so this 4K will explode off the screen. Still The Searchers, Pale Rider, The Wild Bunch and How the West Was Won to make buying that set worthwhile for you.

The box looks like a mexican club team jersey with all the stickers on it

Great film this was the second John Wayne film I ever saw after Sons Of Katie Elder with my granddad many moons ago.

I hoped you'd like Streets more as well Dem as it's one of my go to films, when I just want something entertaining that I don't have to think about.
It was one of my first video rentals so I guess I was at the right age, so for me it's pure nostalgia.
Diane Lane is hot in it too, which is nice.

My recent additions have come from a variety of places: eBay, Amazon, Music Magpie, and CeX.

The eight in the second picture were from Music Magpie in the 4 for £8 selection and the only ones I've seen are Leatherheads, Let Me In, and Independence Day.

I love Local Hero and have wanted to own a copy for ages, so this was an impulse purchase from Amazon where it was, like the X-Files: Season 11, cheaper than usual and cost less than buying a second-hand copy.

I am gradually upgrading some of my favourite films from Blu-ray to 4K Ultra HD when the reviews say the difference will be significant and enhance my enjoyment of the films, hence why I looked for – and found – the Iron Man films and Inside Out – reasonably priced at eBay and The Avengers at CeX.

It's interesting that the 4K Ultra HD discs contain the American versions of The Avengers and Inside Out with the Blu-ray discs featuring the versions shown and sold in the UK. This means The Avengers is uncut and Inside Out has the ice hockey daydream rather than the soccer/football one which was animated for European and South American audiences.

Recent buys.

Tried watching crash last night, couldn't get into it bored me senseless.

Justin101 15th January 2024 02:20 PM

Spent too much money this month lol. But to say I’ve been waiting YEARS for the Morrissey/Kier films in HD would be an understatement. Guy in HMV just then was buying the exact same three discs lol.

A Shout Factory Creepshow 4K UHD set has arrived. I was relieved to find that the discs were in mint condition as I had to jump through hoops to obtain replacement discs for the Alligator 4K UHD set (those discs were badly scratched and Shout Factory won't send replacements to an overseas address). Can't wait to watch it, since it's a new 4K scan of the camera negative, it should blow away my old US Warner Brothers blu-ray. Also it's one of my all-time favourite horror films. :)

Me All The Deceased .... came, so that's nice. Might fire that player up later, as I still need to peruse Death Has Blue Eyes ahem. Happy Demon!!
